· Speaking of R.E.M., one of Peter Buck's favorite artists, Roky Erickson (whom he described as "Buddy Holly on acid"), is also getting the expanded re-issue treatment as Restless Records is releasing two out-of-print albums from the 1980s in March: Don't Slander Me and Gremlins Have Pictures. If you haven't dipped into the psychedelic Texas well water that spawned Erickson's group, the 13th Floor Elevators, this Tuesday the Shout Factory! Records label is releasing a two-CD primer into his psychotic world of aliens, vampires, and zombies, entitled I Have Always Been Here Before. The 45-song collection spans both solo and band recordings, with acid-punk classics such as "You're Gonna Miss Me" and "It's a Cold Night for Alligators."
· Another signature voice from the 1980s, Stan Ridgway, is back with the just-released DVD, Holiday in Dirt. Originally a solo CD from 2001, the DVD collects 14 short films created for each song by different filmmakers. Look for Ridgway to support the New West Records release with a tour next month and a stop at SXSW.
· Tired of albums with only a few decent songs and too much filler? I can't say enough great things about the third volume of KCRW-FM's Sounds Eclectic series, released last month by Palm Pictures. Collecting 13 songs recorded live in the station's studios during Nic Harcourt's Morning Becomes Eclectic radio program, the disc is simply one perfect moment followed by another. Highlights include Radiohead's acoustic version of "Go to Sleep" and a creepy, beautiful cover of the Flaming Lips' "Waitin' for a Superman" by Iron & Wine. Other artists sharing their magic include Kinky, My Morning Jacket, Paul Weller of The Jam, Interpol, Jem, and Franz Ferdinand.
