· Birds do it. Bees do it. And like humans, they often make strange "music" in the process. Next month The Residents are back with a new album on Mute Records that makes new music from the chippings and rhythmic mating sounds of coitus (non-interruptus).
Entitled Animal Lover, the new CD takes recordings of frogs, cicadas, whales, and other animals and whips the processed sounds into songs such as "Mr. Bee's Bumble" and "What Have My Chickens Done Now?" A 52-page booklet promises to be a picture book of animal tales and animal love.
· Speaking of strange, beautiful noise, one of the most ambitious projects in memory is due next week, with Petra Haden's Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out on Bar None Records. The former That Dog vocalist tackles the entire Who album a capella, hitting not only the words, but all the guitar parts and drum rolls.
· Filter magazine and Urban Outfitters have created a new benefit CD raising funds for UNICEF's Asian-tsunami-relief fund. Available exclusively at the lifestyle retailer at the end of this month, the 26-track, two-CD set is packed with rarities, live tracks, and mixes. Some of the artists involved include Franz Ferdinand, Wilco, Interpol, French Kicks, Eisley, Futureheads, Clinic, and My Morning Jacket.
