Twenty years after it first raised awareness and funds for African famine relief, the Band Aid Trust is active again, preparing to re-record the mother of all benefit projects, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" later this week with Bono of U2; members of Morcheeba, Coldplay, Travis, and Supergrass; Sir Paul McCartney; Dido; Robbie Williams; and Snow Patrol, with guitar power via The Darkness. Sure to be a hot stocking stuffer with its release on November 29, the project is expected to attract more artists by the time the recording session begins, and monies raised will be directed to the Darfur region of Sudan. Back in 1984, the original single raised more than $10 million and set in motion Live Aid, the historic benefit concert from 1985, back when MTV was exciting and pop stars actually played instruments. This Tuesday Rhino Records and Warner Strategic Marketing are releasing the hard-to-find Live Aid extravaganza as an official four-DVD box set, after finding pirates selling the DVD concert over the Internet. Packed with goodies, highlights include the Band Aid video and the American response, USA for Africa's "We Are the World," and the making-of documentary Food & Trucks & Rock 'n' Roll. Are you old enough to remember where you were when this historic 16-hour broadcast reached nearly 2 billion viewers worldwide? One performance has been snipped from the box set, as the members of Led Zeppelin weren't too keen on how their "reunion" that day went off.
