As most consumers can't yet easily or cheaply burn DVDs, this next generation of home video has become the sizzle to bring buyers back into record stores. This season brings a mountain of cool DVD releases, on their own or as an added bonus with CDs. Jack Black and his Tenacious D experience have just released the proudly titled Complete Masterworks on the Epic label. The two-DVD set collects rare clips, the band's Crank Yankers appearance from last year, and live footage from the Brixton Academy last fall.

Open up your third eye wide this coming Tuesday, as the Plexifilm imprint releases the rare 1974 film by Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Solar Arkestra, Space Is the Place, on DVD, restored to its original 82-minute length.

Also due Tuesday is Sanctuary Records' DVD companion to its two-CD document of this past summer's Bonnaroo music festival. With a different track listing than the CD, the filmed version features highlights from all four stages, with Jack Johnson, My Morning Jacket, the Flaming Lips, the Allman Brothers Band, Ben Kweller, and more.

Available for the first time on DVD this Tuesday, Hip-O Records and Pink Floyd are issuing the director's cut of the band's 1972 concert film, Live at Pompeii, now with bonus live rehearsals and a 20-minute documentary.

Anyone playing Santa might think of DVDs tucked inside gift stockings, as November includes swings from heavy hitters Pearl Jam, U2, the Grateful Dead, Coldplay, Stone Temple Pilots, and individual projects from half of The Beatles. Pearl Jam will offer up a concert DVD alongside its upcoming two-CD rarities collection, Lost Dogs, both due November 11. The DVD documents the band's Madison Square Garden stop on its Riot Act tour, featuring guests Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Ben Harper, Cheetah Chrome of the Dead Boys, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Steve Diggle and Tony Barber of the Buzzcocks, and Sleater-Kinney. U2 is king of Ireland's Slane Castle on November 18, as Interscope releases U2 Go Home, a 2001 concert filmed at the castle in front of 160,000 fans. Highlights include an interactive "spincam" that allows the viewer to control camera positions, a Dolby 5.1-channel mix, and a documentary on the band's early recording sessions at the castle in 1984. Coldplay offers up a live performance from Sydney, Australia, simply entitled Coldplay Live 2003, on November 4. Featuring 17 songs and a 40-minute documentary, the DVD is also released in a special European package with more goodies. The Grateful Dead salute the passing of San Francisco's Winterland with a concert DVD of the band playing the venue's last show on December 31, 1978. Due November 11 on Monterey Video, the two-DVD set features the entire four-hour performance, prankster Ken Kesey, and interactive camera possibilities. Stone Temple Pilots offer video clips of appreciation to their fans next month with the release of the new CD collection Thank You. The special edition of this Atlantic Records best-of disc will feature a bonus DVD of all their videos, and covers of Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" and Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion." Most exciting are new releases honoring George Harrison and John Lennon. The concert celebration of Harrison's music, Concert for George, is making the movie-theatre circuit in limited release, but next month's double-DVD features the entire concert, 5.1 surround sound, and interviews with performers Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Tom Petty. Due on the same day, November 18, Capitol Records' Lennon Legend DVD is a whopper, with reels of rare private film footage, video clips, new animations of Lennon's drawings, and all-new videos for "Working Class Hero," "Beautiful Boy," and "Nobody Told Me."
