Soundtrack Gathers Hard-Rock Royalty

• This Tuesday brings the anticipated soundtrack to Underworld, the upcoming film in which vampire sophisticates battle street-thug werewolves in Budapest. The Lakeshore Records release features the return of former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, joining Nine Inch Nails guitarist Danny Lohner, Richard Patrick of Filter, and Josh Freese of A Perfect Circle under the name The Damning Well.

Blues Headliners Highlight Ribfest

The focus at the River Rockin' Ribfest is obviously great food, but organizers have also assembled a strong musical lineup to fill your ears while you stuff your face. The festival in Davenport's LeClaire Park features country music on Friday and oldies on Sunday (see the Live Music section for details), but the highlights are likely to come from a pair of artists on Saturday's blues card: James Solberg at 7 p.

GBV Issues Golden Tickets to Lucky Fans

• This Tuesday brings the long-anticipated Earthquake Glue album from Guided by Voices, and the band is beautifully riffing the "behind-the-scenes sweepstakes" concept à la Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. Not only is the album a sweet stunner, but also hidden inside a handful of the Matador Records release are "golden tickets" that will give the lucky buyer a free advance copy of the group's forthcoming six-disc box set.

Covers Steal the Spotlight in New Releases

• Cover fever is the diagnosis this coming Tuesday, with three new releases boasting nifty interpretations that leave me stroking my chin in curiosity. Wynonna Judd's new album, What the World Needs Now Is Love on the Curb imprint, features covers of Elvis Presley's hit "Burning Love" and - dig this - guest guitarist Jeff Beck on her take on Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is.

Bands Stretch Out in Brew & View Sets

After a staggered and protracted soundcheck – to a nearly full audience, no less – the Marlboro Chorus finally hit the stage in earnest roughly an hour after its scheduled start time. This is no sweat for me because it’s my first visit to the Quad Cities Brew & View and I’m just sort of touring the joint – a great venue for live bands, and for movies as well, I’m sure.

Blues Artists Cash in

• This Tuesday the Northern Blues label releases a terrific new tribute to the master songcraft of Johnny Cash, entitled Johnny's Blues. Cash was already saluted earlier this year in two other CD tributes on other labels, and this new project collects 13 Cash songs spun in a wide range of blues styles, from acoustic soul to roadhouse boogie.

Early Norah Jones Recording Hits Shelves

• If you've caught the smooth fever of Norah Jones, a new seven-track EP reveals sessions from 2000 featuring covers of Magic Sam's "All Your Love" and Bob Dylan's "Heart of Mine." Simply titled The Peter Malick Group Featuring Norah Jones, the Koch Entertainment CD is the fruit of a friendship between the blues singer-songwriter and Jones, then a 21-year-old unknown artist trying to establish herself.

Kids' TV Host Moves to Adult Waters

• Almost as iconic as Mr. Rogers' trademark cardigan is the green striped rugby shirt worn by Steve on Nickelodeon TV's Blue's Clues. After six years as the show's original host, he's been replaced by another soft-spoken actor, and it felt unsettling to deflect "Steve is dead" rumors from my seven-year-old and find Steve Burns the post-blue-dog serious actor portraying a creepy killer on Law & Order.
