DAVENPORT, IOWA (May 20, 2019) — Due to the April 30 flood that has Bucktown Center for the Arts closed for renovations, MidCoast Fine Arts’ 2019 ArtWorks Expo High School Pastel Competition will be held at the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges Campus (EICC). College administrators generously have offered use of the site for the event that will take place Saturday, May 25, 9:30AM-4PM, 101 W 3rd St, Davenport, Iowa, 52801.

Teamwork and creativity reign at the annual challenge for high-school student teams who complete a giant pastel mural during one day. Registration is open to all high schools within a 90-mile radius of the Quad Cities. Registration begins at 9:30AM and lunch is provided. Teams compete for cash awards to fund and improve education in the participants’ art departments. Nine schools have pre-registered: Alleman, Assumption, Rock Island, North Scott, Pleasant Valley, and Thurgood Marshall; and, from Davenport, there will be Central, North, and West.

The 2019 juror is Zaiga Thorson, art professor and assistant to the chair in Communication and Fine Arts at Black Hawk College, where she has taught since 1999. She has a BFA in painting, with an additional concentration in graphic design, from Western Michigan University, and an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University.

The murals will be exhibited at MidCoast's Gallery West, Rock Island, from June 5 through July 20. Gallery West is located at 1629 2nd Avenue, Rock Island. All participating schools receive a cash award for their art department. The awards reception is re-scheduled for Friday, June 14 at Gallery West, 6-9PM. Awards will be made at 7:30PM.

Support for this event is provided by the Rock Island Art Guild. Drawing supplies were donated by Blick Art Materials and Home Depot provided a discount on the purchase of drawing boards.
