Rock Island, Ill. Woman Claims Big Prize In ‘Super Crossword’ Scratch Game
CLIVE, Iowa – A $50,000-winning Iowa Lottery scratch ticket was sold last week in Bettendorf.
Debbie Steele of Rock Island, Ill. claimed the 21st of 43 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery’s “Super Crossword” scratch game.
The 50-year-old said she bought her winning ticket last week at Casey’s, 3902 State St. in Bettendorf, but she didn’t know that she’d won the game’s $50,000 top prize until Saturday, when she scanned her ticket on a self-checker lottery machine at a different retailer.
“It was the first ticket that I checked and when I saw it go by it said, ‘Congratulations.’ And it had $50,000 and I looked at the machine and I’m like, ‘The machine must be broken,’” Steele told lottery employees Monday as she claimed her prize at the lottery’s regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Steele said the winning message on the lottery machine disappeared too quickly, so she scanned her ticket again to make sure she read it correctly.
“I paid closer attention,” she said. “I looked and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, I think I just won $50,000!’”
Steele said she plans to use a portion of her lottery winnings to pay bills and save the rest for a vacation.
Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery’s website, www.ialottery.com.
