CORALVILLE, IOWA (August 20, 2024) — The start of the school year brings an increase in traffic around schools, parks, and residential areas during morning and afternoon hours. Children, often excited and eager to get to school, may not always be aware of traffic rules or the potential dangers of the road. Drivers must be especially cautious during this time, as the smallest lapse in attention can lead to serious consequences.
Drivers are reminded to slow down, particularly in school zones where speed limits are reduced for safety reasons. Lower speeds give drivers more time to react to unexpected situations, such as a child suddenly crossing the street. It's also essential for drivers to be mindful of crosswalks, always yielding to pedestrians. Even if the crosswalk is not clearly marked, pedestrians, particularly children, have the right of way. Patience in these situations is crucial, as those few moments could prevent a tragedy.
Additionally, eliminating distractions while driving is imperative. Distracted driving, whether due to using a cell phone, adjusting the radio, or eating, is a leading cause of crashes.
Parents and children can also take steps to ensure safety. Parents should take the time to teach their children about road safety, including looking both ways before crossing the street, using crosswalks, and being aware of their surroundings. Children should also understand the dangers of running into the road without checking for vehicles. Parents should teach them the rules of the road, such as signaling turns and stopping at stop signs. For younger children, walking or biking to school with an adult or older sibling is best.
Ensuring the safety of vulnerable road users requires a collective effort from the entire community. Local governments and schools are implementing various initiatives, such as crossing guards, improved signage, and traffic calming measures in school zones. These measures, combined with the vigilance and cooperation of all road users, can create a safer environment for everyone.
“As students return to school, we all have a role to play in protecting them,” said Matt Burkey, Safe Routes to School Coordinator for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. “Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a driver, or a community member, please take the time to be extra cautious on the roads. Let’s work together to ensure that every child arrives at school and returns home safely.”
