BANDITS SHOCKED BY KERNELS SUNDAY

Four-run ninth inning leads to one-run loss in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Quad Cities River Bandits allowed four runs in the ninth inning without recording an out to fall to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Joe Cronin hit a two-run single up the middle to cap off the comeback for Cedar Rapids. All six of the Bandits runs came on homers, with Troy Sieber, Chaz McCormick, and Luis Payano all going deep. McCormick's was a grand slam that gave the Bandits the lead in the third inning.
The Bandits (31-18, 68-49) opened up the scoring on Sieber's sixth home run of the year, a solo shot in the first. The Kernels (23-26, 62-57) answered with three first-inning runs, led by a two-run home run by Aaron Whitefield. Cedar Rapids would not score again until the ninth while the Bandits regained the lead with a five-run third inning. McCormick's grand slam was his first Midwest League home run and Payano followed up with his first Class-A homer to go back-to-back.
That lead held until the ninth, when the Kernels scored four times on four singles and two walks to come back for the win. Salvador Montano (BS,1 L, 5-3) took the loss, taking over with runners at the corners and a three-run lead in the ninth. Patrick McGuff (W, 2-2) earned the win in relief for the Kernels.
The Bandits have lost three straight games for just the second time in the second half. They look to snap the streak Monday, welcoming the Peoria Chiefs to Modern Woodmen Park for a four-game series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. CT with gates opening one hour prior for a Brews and Brats Monday. Kit Scheetz makes his Midwest League debut in the start for the River Bandits against Ian Oxnevad (3-9, 4.21) for Peoria.

BANDITS BASHED IN CEDAR RAPIDS
Kernels score in six straight innings in route of Quad Cities

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Quad Cities River Bandits dropped their second straight game to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a 9-1 loss Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Chaz McCormick drove in the Bandits only run while Cedar Rapids scored at least once in the second through seventh innings to run away with the victory.

The River Bandits (31-17, 68-48) went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the game, loading the bases in three separate innings but scoring no runs off of those chances. The Kernels (22-26, 61-57) opened the scoring with a two-run home run from Shane Carrier in the second inning and never looked back. Jimmy Kerrigan also homered for Cedar Rapids in the fifth inning.

The Bandits lone run came on a fielder's choice by McCormick, which allowed Daz Cameron to score after his double earlier in the inning. Josh Rojas also collected a base hit in the loss to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Troy Sieber drew a walk in the first inning to make it 18 consecutive games on base.

KERNELS END BANDITS WIN STREAK

Bandits held to four hits in shutout loss

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The River Bandits fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 3-0, on Friday night, ending the Bandits nine-game win streak. Clark Beeker tossed seven shutout innings in the win for Cedar Rapids. Ben Rortvedt provided two of the three RBIs for the Kernels.

Rortvedt’s solo homer in the second gave the Kernels (21-26, 60-57) a 1-0 lead. Rortvedt singled off the wall in left to make it 2-0 in the third. The fly ball was initially ruled a catch by Bandits (31-16, 68-47) left fielder Ronnie Dawson. Dawson threw the ball back to the infield on what appeared to be a double play to end the inning. The umpires conferred, ruled the ball hit the fence first, scoring the run. Lewin Diaz picked up an RBI infield single in the six, extending the lead to 3-0 Kernels. The Bandits got the lead off man on in the seventh and eighth, but double plays thwarted both potential rallies.

Beeker (11-3) allowed only three hits over his seven-shutout innings, walking three and striking out none. Ryan Mason tossed a scoreless eighth inning. Colton Davis nailed down his third save of the year. Yohan Ramirez lasted just 2.1 innings in his start. Ramirez (3-5) allowed two runs, four hits, struck out four and walked three.
