On Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Moline Teen Center 1122 5th Avenue, Moline, IL, a special recital will be jointly presented by Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley (BGCMV).  This is the very first performance by students from both the Moline and Davenport clubs in the inaugural year of this unique and innovative Community Cello Program.

The students ranging from age 7 to 9 (second and third graders) have taken completely free twice a week group cello lessons with QCSO Cellist Elisabeth Oar at both the Davenport and Moline Club locations.  In addition to instruction and supervised practice time, the program provides each of the students with a new cello and all the accessories for music study. After three years of study, the students will progress from this program directly into their public school programs along with their own cellos.

“I am so proud of these students and the progress they have made throughout the year,” says QCSO Cellist and instructor Elisabeth Oar “they have worked very hard and we are excited to share what they’ve learned.” Supported by an initial generous gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley, this unique and innovative partnership serves a crucial need in our community by removing barriers to musical training.  QCSO has added this to its expansive educational programs, which also include the five ensembles of the Quad City Symphony Youth Ensembles, the Private Lesson Program serving high school students across the Quad Cities, our in-school engagement programs that bring QCSO musicians and guest artists into the schools, and Symphony Day, a day of performances at the Adler Theatre by our Youth Symphony Orchestra for more than 6,000 local 4th and 5th grade students.

“We are thrilled to have begun this much-needed program in collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club,” states QCSO Executive Director, Brian Baxter, “as we celebrate the accomplishments of our students this year, we are looking forward to growing this impactful program in the years to come.”
