SOUTH BEND, INDIANA (July 13, 2019) — The South Bend Cubs used a walk-off two-run home run from Brennan Davis in the bottom of the tenth inning to hand the Quad Cities River Bandits their first extra-inning loss of the 2019 season on Saturday night at Four Winds Field. The River Bandits entered the bottom of the frame with a 4-3 lead when Davis went the other way off of Hunter Martin for the decisive long-ball.

The only reason the game even made it to extra-innings was due to a ninth-inning rally by Quad Cities (12-9, 55-32). With South Bend leading 2-1, Freudis Nova hooked a single into shallow left-field for just the Bandits third hit of the evening. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Alex Holderbach worked a 2-2 count against Cubs closer Brian Glowicki and then lined a game-tying single into left.

In the top of the tenth, Trey Dawson started the extra frame on second base and was joined on the bases by Ramiro Rodriguez, who walked. Alex McKenna hammered a ground-ball off the glove of the diving short-stop Andy Weber and into left field to score Dawson and put the Bandits on top for the first time all night.

South Bend (12-10, 49-41) began their half of the final inning with Clayton Daniel on second base. Weber struck out on three pitches to start the inning, giving the Bandits hope to close it out. However, after chasing a slider away for strike one, Davis hit his game-winning home-run on another slider from Martin.

The Cubs took an early 1-0 lead when Bandits starter Lupe Chavez committed a balk with the bases loaded in the second inning. Oscar Campos tied the game with his first home run of the season in the top of the fourth. His home run was the first hit of the night for the Bandits. South Bend grabbed their 2-1 lead with an unearned run off of reliever Jose Bravo in the fifth frame.

Chavez tossed 4.0 innings and allowed one run while striking out five in his Midwest League debut. Bravo was solid out of the pen allowing only the unearned run in 5.0 innings of work and fanning four. He scattered five hits.

The Cubs has three hitters finish with multiple hits in the game. Davis collected three and both Luke Reynolds and Jonathan Sierra tallied two. The River Bandits did not have a player with more than one hit.

The Bandits and Cubs will meet in game two of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05PM. The River Bandits will have RHP Jose Rivera (4-3, 5.30) on the mound in a meeting with South Bend RHP Riley Thompson (5-4, 2.35).
