Farm tenants and land owners are encouraged to attend August 15 in Bettendorf

Bettendorf, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Scott County is hosting a farmland leasing meeting on Tuesday August 15 at 6:00 PM, Scott County Extension Office, 875 Tanglefoot Lane in Bettendorf. The annual meeting is offered to address questions that land owners, tenants or other interested individuals have about leasing farmland.

Topics will include land values and cash rent trends, cost of production, methods for determining a rental rate, legislative updates regarding leases and communicating with tenants or landlords.

“The most recent cash rental rate survey for Iowa shows that rent values across the state of Iowa have declined for the fourth consecutive year, dropping by 4.8 percent from 2016,” said Ryan Drollette, farm management specialist with Iowa State University. “However, rents for individual farms should be based on productivity, ease of farming, fertility, drainage, local price patterns, longevity of the lease, and possible services performed by the tenant.”

The two and a half hour workshop is designed to assist landowners, farm tenants and other agri-business professionals with current issues related to farmland ownership, management and leasing arrangements. Attendees will gain a better understanding of current cash rental rate surveys and factors driving next year’s rents such as market trends and input costs.

Each registrant will receive a 100-page workbook with resources regarding land leasing agreements such as surveys, sample written lease agreements and termination forms, along with many other publications.
