CLINTON, IOWA (August 16, 2019) — The Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, "Clinton, Iowa's Children's Museum," is having a splendid week of fun and play. On Wednesday, customize your own one-of-a-kind butterfly. On Friday, go up, up, and away with Parachute Play; then come read with Ms Cotton on Saturday morning at Storytime Saturday. Each of these programs is free with regular museum admission or membership. Also, please remember that the Discovery Center is a Blue Star Museum, granting free admission to active-duty military and their families through Labor Day. And save the date for the new Discovery Center Fundraiser Dinner Event on Thursday, September 19.

WOW Wednesday: Paper Plate Butterfly

Wednesday, August 21, 2-5PM, is a WOW Wednesday at the Discovery Center, sponsored by Clinton Lions Club. Make your way to the Please-Touch-Table where you’ll get to celebrate butterfly season by making your very own butterfly. These insects come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors — but this one is all yours to customize into the perfect butterfly for you.

Miss Jean is also here every WOW Wednesday, with her chess, juggling, and logic puzzles. She’s been bringing in new games every week so stop by and see what her new favorites are. Miss Jean teaches beginning chess to all, from preschoolers through adult, or she will play a strategic game with an opponent to match their skill level. Additionally, she loves to juggle and can teach anyone of any age to become a successful juggler. Also, she has on hand three large cases of logic puzzles, construction materials, and hands-on brain-teasers to fascinate any age. She can teach anyone; all ages and abilities are welcome.

WOW Wednesday is perfect for school-aged kids and their families and is a great activity for a school early-out afternoon. WOW Wednesday is drop in with no pre-registration required — it is an enrichment program with no extra class-fee.

Funtime Friday: Parachute Play

Friday, August 23, at 10AM, is Funtime Friday, sponsored by Clinton Kiwanis Club and Alliant Energy Foundation. Raise your hands to the sky and get swept away by a giant parachute. This is a great teamwork activity, a little workout, and so much fun all wrapped into one parachute. As always, this program includes a snack and story to go with the theme. This popular program is designed for preschoolers and their grown-ups, although all age children are welcome anytime.

Storytime Saturday: “Telling Time”

Every Saturday during this summer at 10AM is Storytime Saturday with Ms Cotton. Enjoy a good book (or two!) on a Saturday morning with Rachel Cotton, an Americorps Literacy Volunteer. This week’s theme is “Telling Time.” Ms Cotton will bring her passion for books, reading, and fun; and many will know her from her work at Eagle Heights Elementary School. Running less than an hour, the program is designed to engage all levels of readers — emerging to proficient — and promises to be great family fun. A FREE enrichment program with your regular museum admission!

Blue Star Museum

Please share the word that the Discovery Center is participating in the Blue Star Museum program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. This program began on Armed Forces Day, May 18, and runs through Labor Day, September 1. As a Blue Star Museum, the Discovery Center grants free museum admission to active-duty military and their families (up to five family members). Active military includes: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, National Guard, and Reserve Members. Please present your active-duty card at the admission desk when you come to the Discovery Center.

Discovery Center Community Outreach

The Discovery Center is out and about helping its community by bringing its brand of entertainment and fun to area organizations. Come visit them at the following event on Saturday, September 21: Clinton MS Walk at the Riverfront at 10AM — providing free facepainting; and then at Downtown Clinton Oktoberfest, 3-6PM — providing free facepaint, games and activities, balloons, and much Discovery Center fun.

Fundraiser Dinner Event

Grown-ups only: Plan to attend a Fundraiser Dinner Event on Thursday, September 19, 5-9:30PM, at the Vista Grande. This will be a ‘grown-ups only’ party with dinner, drinks, dancing, and a silent auction, designed for the kid in all of us. The popular band Coupe DeVille will bring a live show. Learn to play again at a party that will showcase some of the great learning experiences offered at your local children’s museum. You can call to reserve your table or buy your tickets at 563-243-3600.

The Discovery Center is located at 332 8th Avenue South in downtown Clinton, Iowa, at the foot of the US 30 Bridge over the mighty Mississippi — where the Lincoln Highway meets the Great River Road. They are open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 9:30AM-5PM, and Sundays, 12:30-5PM. Museum admission is $4 per person ages two to 64, $3 per person ages 65 and older, free for children one and younger, and free for members of the children's museum.

The Felix Adler Children's Discovery Center is a non-profit children's museum whose mission is to provide a safe and positive environment for families to discover the world by exploring arts, culture, literacy, and science through educational programs and interactive exhibits.
