Senate confirms Justice Department’s top deputy by vote of 94-6

WASHINGTON – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley today released the following statement after the Senate confirmed Rod Rosenstein of Maryland to be the Deputy Attorney General by a vote of 94-6.

“Rod Rosenstein’s well-earned reputation for independence garners him high praise from Republicans and Democrats alike. He was appointed to serve in the Justice Department by both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama – a record that speaks to the universal respect he has earned over the years.  He has pledged to ‘defend the integrity and independence of our Justice Department, to protect public safety, to preserve civil rights, to pursue justice, to advance the rule of law and to promote public confidence.’ His resume at the Justice Department that he is true to his word.  I’m confident Mr. Rosenstein will serve the Department and the American people well as our next Deputy Attorney General,” Grassley said.

The deputy attorney general serves as the nation’s second-highest ranking law enforcement officer.  As chairman, Grassley presided over the Judiciary Committee’s hearing for Rosenstein in early March.
