Strong state policy has led to more than half of Iowa’s diesel containing biodiesel

PRESS RELEASE (February 28, 2019)

WHAT: The “Iowa Biodiesel Day on the Hill,” a legislator education day and luncheon hosted by the Iowa Biodiesel Board. Members and supporters will meet with state legislators to discuss the benefits of the state’s biodiesel industry and their 2019 legislative priorities, which include the following:

  • Protect biodiesel production and biodiesel promotion tax credits, which encourage biodiesel production and use in the state.
  • Fund the Renewable Fuels Infrastructure Program, designed to assist the petroleum industry with equipment to expand the use of renewable fuels in Iowa.

WHO: Top national and regional industry experts, including Grant Kimberley, Iowa Biodiesel Board executive director; Tom Brooks (Western Dubuque Biodiesel), IBB chair; Dawn Carlson, President and CEO, FUELIowa (Formerly Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa); Shelby Neal, National Biodiesel Board director of state governmental affairs; biodiesel producers; petroleum distributors, farmers, and other supporters.

BACKGROUND: Iowa’s comprehensive state policies are working as intended, according to IBB. At 365 million gallons of estimated production in 2017, Iowa is the leading biodiesel producer. Iowa Department of Revenue data show that 51 percent of the state’s diesel fuel contained biodiesel in 2018. Biodiesel is an advanced biofuel made from agricultural byproducts and co-products, such as soybean oil. The Iowa Biodiesel Board is a state trade association representing the biodiesel industry.
