DES MOINES, IOWA (April 2, 2021) — The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter has announced the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month intended to exemplify the importance, beauty, and significance of architecture. This year’s number of statewide initiatives has been greatly impacted by the current pandemic, but some annual traditions continue, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Kim Reynolds, the annual AIA Iowa Spring Conference held virtually this year, the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award, and a social-media campaign amplifying the profession.

Returning this year is the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award designed to promote architecture and to encourage appreciation and interaction with buildings within the state. AIA Iowa invites the public to serve as the jury and to judge architecture built by Iowa architects throughout the month of April. Anyone can vote once per project per day at IowaArchitecture.org. Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

The largest of all of April’s events will be taking place virtually April 28-29. The AIA Iowa 2021 Spring Conference theme is Materialize: Architecture is the practice of making ideas MATERIALIZE. The architecture profession combines material (physical objects), detailing, and craft as a language to articulate forms and enliven spaces. In turn, those forms and spaces are material (important) to the health of individuals, communities, and the world. As communities begin to emerge from the pandemic and begin to imagine a healthy, more-resilient, and inclusive world, architects will draw on our skills, knowledge, and talents to see that future MATERIALIZE. The AIA Iowa Spring Conference brings architects and design professionals from across the state together for keynotes, workshops, and networking between students and professionals. Approximately 200 attendees will attend.
