The Coalition will also introduce Profiles in Civic Courage, awarded to elected officials who have shown courageous leadership at a time when special interests, dark money, and divisive politics pressure votes.

Approx 35 confirmed elected officials plus 300 community members and leaders are expected to be in attendance. Remarks for the occasion will be delivered by Illinois Representative Delia Ramirez (3rd Ward), State Senator Ram Villivalam, and State Rep Abdelnasser Rashid. There will also be a musical performance by Shahid Trio — South Side High School students

2023 has been a milestone year of overcoming challenges towards successes in civic organizing and legislation for the American Muslim community and its allies of all races, faiths, and backgrounds. About the Muslim Civic Coalition:

According to data from World Population Review, Illinois is home to more Muslims per capita than any other state in the nation, yet this vibrant and complex community lacks adequate representation in senior and mid-level civic and government positions. The Muslim Civic Coalition is a partnership of hundreds of Changemakers and Organizations. Their mission is to Convene, Collaborate, and Amplify social and civic efforts with diverse races, faiths, and communities towards Civic Justice. Civic Justice is when 1) Laws made for us — are made with us, 2) Public officials understand us — and more look like us, and 3) Our data and stories — drive action towards Equity.
