Des Moines, IA - State Senator Nate Boulton, Democratic candidate for governor, made the following statement in reaction to the deappropriation bill introduced by Senate Republicans today:

“Just two weeks after Governor Reynolds gave her Condition of the State address, Republicans have introduced their mid-year budget cut plan, a late and desperate move to balance the budget after raiding rainy day funds to allow for continued giveaways of almost $600 million in corporate tax credits and exemptions,” said Boulton.

“Iowa’s public education system is receiving over $27 million in cuts right after Gov. Reynolds said she was committed to education, and though she’s talked about supporting rural Iowa communities, resources essential to small-town life are on the chopping block. Gov. Reynolds and Republicans can claim their priorities are in line with Iowa’s needs, but those claims are not backed up by their actions. Their original campaign promise of creating 200,000 new jobs and increasing family incomes by 25 percent has failed because she prioritized corporate giveaways over working Iowans, devastating our state budget.”

“It’s time for new leadership in this state from a governor who will prioritize the needs of working Iowans, and budget to reflect those priorities for real, sustainable economic progress for our state.”
