DAVENPORT, IOWA — (December 4, 2020) Are you or someone you know looking for a rewarding living-wage career and willing to work hard to get what you want? Have you heard apprenticeships lead to skilled, high-demand work, but weren’t sure where to start?
Learn about a new University of Iowa Labor Center preapprentice course to prepare Iowans to qualify for and complete a skilled trades-apprenticeship. Registered apprenticeship provides high-quality “earn while you learn” job-training with pay from day one, no student debt, and a path to a skilled-trades career with living wages and benefits.
Orientation sessions will introduce potential program partners and interested applicants to registration requirements and course highlights, which include:
- Exposure to 16 different skilled trades and industry-awareness;
- Math and test preparation;
- Introduction to tools, materials, and blueprint reading;
- Recognized multi-craft core curriculum (MC3), CPR, and OSHA 10 safety certifications;
- Communication, time management, financial literacy, and interviewing skills;
- Improved chance of acceptance into a paid registered apprenticeship training program in construction or advanced manufacturing; and
- Connections to eastern Iowa apprenticeship training coordinators, and support toward success in completing training.
A four-week Apprenticeship Readiness course will run Tuesday, February 11, 2020, through Saturday, March 7, 2020 in Davenport. Course is offered free, with materials provided, to Iowans who meet eligibility requirements and commit to full attendance and participation.
