GRAND JUNCTION, IOWA (June 14, 2019) — Join Trees Forever and the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers for a special field-day to help pork producers utilize trees in windbreaks. Pork and Trees Field Day will be on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, 10AM-1:30PM. During the field day, Bruce and Jenny Wessling will showcase two windbreaks around two hog-confinement buildings, one planted in 2009 and one planted this year. "Our established windbreak has saved us time and gas money in the winter since the trees keep the snow away from the ventilation fans," Bruce Wessling said. "Our sites will give field day attendees a unique point of view and showcase the difference that decade can make." "Trees are more than aesthetics," Trees Forever Program Manager Brad Riphagen said. "Trees provide many benefits, including energy-savings, as trees block harsh winter winds and improvements to air quality." The 10-year old planting was the first site for the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers Green Farmstead Partner Program. The Green Farmstead Partner program is a collaborative effort involving the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers, Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association. "To date, more than 70,000 trees have been planted on Iowa livestock farms through the Green Farmstead Partner program and that number is growing every year," said Brian Waddingham, executive director of CSIF. "The purpose of the field day is to showcase responsible and successful livestock farming through the planting of windbreaks. Participating in the Green Farmstead Partner program allows livestock farmers to gain timely and cost-effective assistance in the planting of trees and shrubs around new and existing cattle feedlots, hog and poultry barns." Lunch will be provided courtesy the Greene County Pork Producers. Please register at: www.TreesForever.org/PorkandTreesFieldDay by June 17.
