DAVENPORT (Feb. 12, 2018) — The Putnam will provide families with the tools they need to engineer a night of hands-on learning and fun Friday, Feb. 16, with Family Fun Night.
STEM-related ideas and activities will take center stage at the Putnam Museum & Science Center with "Engineering our World" from 5 to 8:30 p.m.
During this monthly family night, museum educators will provide free activities in the Grand Lobby, including building challenges and a demonstration of how a 3D printer works.
One such challenge gives families a chance to build a catapult using rubber bands and craft sticks. Visitors will also be able to craft boats with foil, straws and tape and test their vessel's buoyancy withstanding additional weight.
A free building area will also be available with materials such as K'NEX and wooden building blocks, and all activities focus on science, technology, engineering and math.
“Careers in STEM are growing fast, and there is no sign that it will slow down anytime soon,” said Octavia Houtekier-Boyd, vice president of education with the Putnam. “Our goal is to inspire as many young people towards a prosperous and enjoyable career as possible.”
The night also includes a 6:30 p.m. showing of “Dream Big 3D” in the museum's Giant Screen Theater.
This film delves into the world of engineering, covering marvels such as the Great Wall of China and the world’s tallest buildings, and tells the stories behind bridge building and the construction of underwater robots.
Tickets will be required to view the night's featured film. Adult movie tickets are $8.50, and youth tickets (3-18) are $7. Members receive $1 off ticket prices.
While activities in the Grand Lobby are free to the public, admission will be required to experience the museum and science center.
