EASTLAKE, OHIO (May 1, 2019) — The Quad Cities River Bandits had their game with the Lake County Captains suspended in the top of the first inning on Wednesday night at Classic Park. The game will be resumed on Thursday morning at 10AM. It will be a nine-inning contest with a seven-inning game to follow 30 minutes after the first concludes.

The River Bandits jumped out of the gates for the second straight night. Alex McKenna opened the game with a walk and raced to third on a single by Enmanuel Valdez. Valdez moved to second on the throw back to the infield. A balk by Lake County starter Alex Royalty allowed the first run to score and Jonathan Lacroix singled home another to put the Bandits ahead 2-0. Scott Schreiber and David Hensley singled in the next two at-bats to load the bases with one out. At that point, Royalty departed the game alongside the athletic trainer with an apparent leg-injury.

As the new pitcher began to get loose, the tarp was placed on the field and heavy rains began to fall. After a 30-minute delay, the game was officially suspended.

Cesar Salazar will be at the plate with the bases loaded when the game resumes. RJ Freure (1-0, 0.63) will start the game as expected. RHP Nivaldo Rodriguez (2-1, 1.80) will take the mound in game two.

ABOUT THE BANDITS: The 2019 season marks the River Bandits’ seventh year as the Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros and the twelfth-anniversary season of regaining the River Bandits moniker, which was voted a top-8 nickname in all of Minor League Baseball in 2015. The River Bandits anchor the Quad Cities sports market, which The Sports Business Journal in their latest rankings named one of the top-two minor-league sports market in the country. Each year the River Bandits donate three annual all-tuition-paid college scholarships, a value of approximately $85,000, as part of the Bandit Scholars Program, which has been in place since 2009. Charitable contributions surpassed $600,000 in 2018, including a $100,000 cash donation to Genesis Health Systems; in 2015 and again in 2017, Ballpark Digest awarded the Bandits its “Best Charity Campaign” of the year, making the River Bandits the only team to win that coveted award twice.
