RME competed with 50 nonprofits nationwide for one of 12 $5,000 grants awarded

DAVENPORT, 2/3/17 - The River Music Experience, a nonprofit performing arts center, is proud to announce that it is one of 12 organizations to win a $5,000 grant from MoonShare - the giveback component of Sugarlands Distilling Co. based out of Tennessee.
RME was one of 50 nonprofits selected nationwide, and the only organization from Iowa, to be included in the final round of voting all through January 2017. The top 12 spots receive a $5,000 grant.
Participation in MoonShare took on a new meaning for RME this year.
"Receiving this grant is especially meaningful to RME for two reasons. First, it was the last grant submitted by Ellis Kell on our behalf." Deb Powers, RME's CEO, said. "Second, because it took all of our friends and community to vote for us every day so that we succeeded."
The late Ellis Kell, who served as RME's Director of Programming and Community Outreach, passed away in December of 2016. In addition to his outreach and educational programming duties, Kell was the lead fundraiser for RME.
"Thank you everyone for helping RME be recognized and awarded in a national grant competition," Powers said.
In years past, RME missed the top 12 by one vote.
"We were so close, it really stung to miss out by one vote," Bret Dale, RME's Director of Programming and Education, said. "This money now could pay for 100 hours of outreach programming to community schools."
Some other winners this year include Camp Sunshine, a retreat in Maine for children with life threatening illnesses, and the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity for injured service members returning home.
