The first game in the National Football League was played in Douglas Park almost 100 years ago. The City of Rock Island and the Friends of Douglas Park intend to refurbish the south end of the park to commemorate that event. This includes the restoration of the 1915 firehouse as a museum recognizing the first game and the commitment of Rock Island firefighters over the years.

In addition, the park will be redeveloped to include a new parking lot, remodeled concession/press box, community playground, lighting and a multi-use field for soccer, football, baseball and softball.
