DAVENPORT, IOWA (May 19, 2025) — Pouding chômeur, a dessert created during the Great Depression in Quebec, is one of the featured foods offered during an around-the-world dinner for the Scott County Democrats annual Red White and Blue Dinner on Saturday, June 28.
The Scott County Dems’ largest fundraiser of the year is taking a different approach to the meals served–rather than buffet lines, the food will be at stations that represent the countries of Canada, Mexico, and China, the United States’ largest trading partners.
“The dining professionals at St Ambrose have put together a tantalizing dinner selection of international flavors for our guests. All food is prepared on-site under the direction of Executive Chef Jose Upegui, including the made-from-scratch desserts. Guests don't need to leave the country to enjoy these dishes," Susan Stoefen, second vice chair, said.
Other food offered includes meals from China: Shanghai braised pork, vegetarian hot pot, and fresh spring rolls; from Canada: Poutine bar, smoked salmon canapes, and maple-and-whiskey-glazed turkey brochettes; and from Mexico: Beef birria tacos (sweet potato and black bean for vegans), house fried corn chips, and hot elote. A cash bar is available.
Special guests speaking will include Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart, Democratic Iowa Senate Leader Janice Weiner, and Democratic Iowa House Leader Brian Meyer. Christina Bohannan, a constitutional law professor at the University of Iowa, will speak on the subject of constitutional law as it relates to current events.
Other local elected officials have been invited including Monica Kurth, HD98; Ken Croken, HD97; Dan Gosa, HD81; Cindy Winckler, SD 49; Mike Zimmer, SD 35; and upcoming city election candidates. All announced state-wide Democratic candidates have been invited to the dinner.
The fundraiser offers a silent auction as well as a raffle for a $500 grocery shopping spree at the winner’s favorite grocery store. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $20 for five tickets or individual tickets at $5 each. Raffle tickets will be available at the dinner.
The evening, at the Rogalski Center at St Ambrose University, Davenport, begins at 5PM for social time, with dinner at 6PM. Tickets are $75 per person and can be purchased at secure.actblue.com/donate/rwbdinner25.
