A presentation that reveals the drama behind the statues at Credit Island Park in Davenport, IA.
River Action in cooperation with the Davenport Parks Department will be celebrating Credit Island Park's history as it interprets the famous painting by George Seurat about Parisians taking a day off and enjoying the natural beauty of an island (the Grande Jette) in the Seine River near Paris.
The painting, which is now located at the Chicago Art Institute, was the the inspiration for the installation of eleven statues in Credit Island. Created by local artists Ted McElhiney and Tom Gleich, the statues gain a Quad City perspective as a cast of eleven enacts fictional stories from the statues' lives. The drama is presented in “readers' theater” fashion, with actors reading and interpreting lines from a script in hand.
This is the second time this outdoor presentation has been performed. The initial play was given last year in mid-summer to an appreciative audience of around 70 people.
