Event to showcase high school talent while raising awareness of 10KQC

United Way of the Quad City Area's Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is accepting applications for bands wishing to compete in their Battle of the Bands on February 28, noon-5:00 at Mojo's at the River Music Experience in Davenport. The event is focused on spotlighting talented teens in the Quad Cities area while building awareness among high school students of 10,000 Hours Show Quad Cities (10KQC). The winner of the Battle will open the 10KQC concert at the Capitol Theatre on April 18.

10KQC is a new program in the Quad Cities geared towards generating over 10,000 hours of volunteer service by local high school and college students. Students verifying 10 hours of volunteer service in the Quad Cities will be rewarded with a free ticket to a concert. Volunteer service is the only way to get a ticket to the event. While the 10,000 Hours Show is already established in Iowa City and Des Moines, this will be the first year for the program in the Quad Cities. The 10KQC concert will feature Trippin Billies and Minus Six, as well as the Battle of the Bands winner.

"The Battle of the Bands is a great opportunity for a local band to get exposure on a big stage opening this concert," stated Tracy Schwind, YAC advisor and United Way spokesperson. "The teens in YAC were looking for a way to get more high school students involved in 10KQC and came up with the idea."

The Youth Advisory Council was established at United Way in 2007 as part of United Way's desire to help build important assets in youth. The group meets monthly with a focus on promoting the good things being done by teens in the community. Participants are students from schools across the area. YAC is currently accepting applications for high school bands that wish to participate in the Battle of the Bands. Applicants may download an application at www.unitedwayqc.org. All applications must be received no later than February 15, 2009.

More about United Way

United Way of the Quad Cities Area has a mission to improve lives and make a positive impact in our community by mobilizing people and resources. United Way has a long history of being a resource to the community in areas of health and human services.

Among our programs is 2-1-1, an information and referral service connecting people in need with the community programs and services designed to meet that need. 2-1-1 can be reached by dialing 211 in Iowa or 563.355.9900 in Illinois.

United Way is working to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of the problems. In 2007, we adopted a new strategic plan that includes leading a Birth-to-Work community agenda to prepare all Quad City area youth for success in school and life. As part of this plan we have brought Imagination Library to the Quad Cities. Through Imagination Library all children in Scott and Rock Island County ages 0-5 will be eligible to receive free, hardcover books mailed to their homes each month. Through this program we hope to help establish the critical pre-reading skills that help ensure success in school. For more information on United Way of the Quad Cities Area, visit www.unitedwayqc.org.
