DUBUQUE, IOWA (October 28, 2019) — University of Dubuque will participate in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s first National Drone Safety Awareness Week, 2-4PM, Thursday, November 7, and Friday, November 8, at the Ed Babka Aviation Learning Center, 10656 Airport Road, to educate the public about drone regulations and showcase how drones are used in the community.
The event will include representatives from UD’s applied aviation technology program, the Academy of Model Aeronautics Dubuque Chapter, Aerial Services Inc, the Dubuque Regional Airport, and the FAA on both days. In addition, the Dubuque Fire Department, Dubuque Police Department, and United States Air Force will be on hand Thursday, while the City of Dubuque Cable TV Division will be at the event Friday.
“There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about drones out there. We are trying to educate the public about the regulations that govern drone-operations and why they are important while showcasing the different applications of drones within our community. A lot of industries are starting to utilize drones in their day-to-day operations,” said Joan Kariuki, instructor of applied aviation technology.
Unmanned aviation is a growing industry nationwide. In 2017, UD launched its bachelor of science in applied aviation technology to provide students an opportunity to learn how to operate unmanned aerial systems in the National Airspace System. Projects from students in the program will be displayed at the National Drone Safety Awareness Week event.
“We encourage anyone who is interested in drones, whether for business or pleasure, to stop by the event, ask questions, and learn more about drones,” Kariuki said.
