DES MOINES, IOWA (September 12, 2019) — State Treasurer Michael L Fitzgerald is bringing his Great Iowa Treasure Hunt to <<County Name>> County in hopes of returning lost money to its rightful owner. "In <<county name>> County we have returned over <<returned amount>> through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. Currently, we are still holding <<holding amount>> for people in <<county name>> County," Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald encourages Iowans to view the interactive map on his website to see updated unclaimed property statistics for every county in Iowa. "Individuals can visit IowaTreasurer.gov to see the statistics on any Iowa county," stated Fitzgerald. In addition to the interactive map, the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt publication will be released soon. "With the upcoming publication, we hope to reunite many Iowans in <<county name>> County with their lost treasure. Individuals can check online at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov."
The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $267 million in unclaimed property to more than 592,000 people since Fitzgerald created it in 1983. Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property's owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report unclaimed property to the state treasurer's office. The assets are then held until the owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits and safe deposit box contents.
To view the interactive map, go to IowaTreasurer.gov and click on 'Interactive Map' under 'The Treasurer's Office' tab and select any county on the map.
