Governor Quinn Names Candice Jones as Director of Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice

Jones Previously Served as Associate Director of the Office of Management and Budget

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today appointed Candice Jones as the director of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ). Jones has most recently served as Associate Director of the Governor's Office of Management and Budget and replaces Arthur Bishop, who has been named to head the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to ensure the safety of all people and children in every community across Illinois.

"Candice Jones is dedicated to helping children and young adults get on the right track," Governor Quinn said. "I look forward to her continuing the progress that former Director Arthur Bishop has made towards ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential."

Jones has a long line of experience in the field of juvenile justice and at-risk youth. As an Associate Director of the Office of Management and Budget, she managed the public safety budget and supported the executive team's policy and planning. She also worked for years, driving juvenile justice strategy in Illinois and nationwide, as a Program Officer at the MacArthur Foundation. She has previously served as the Executive Director of the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission where she worked to accelerate reform. In 2012, Jones served as a White House Fellow, one of the country's oldest and most prestigious fellowship programs for leadership and public service.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the people of Illinois, especially some of the state's most vulnerable youth," Jones said. "I am committed to continuing our progress in helping youth become productive members of society and reducing the numbers of those same youth returning to the Department's custody."

Jones holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a Bachelor's degree in African and African-American Studies and Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis.

Jones will be tasked with building on the significant progress made by Bishop, who served as the Director from 2011 until his transition this past week. Under Bishop's tenure as Director of the IDJJ, the population of youth in state facilities dropped to under 900 as of Jan. 1, 2014. Historically, the average population was 1,500.

Today's announcement continues the Governor's agenda to make Illinois government more accountable, transparent and effective.

Mallards Rally Past Tulsa

MOLINE, Ill. (January 31, 2014) - Vladimir Nikiforov scored the winning goal with 4:52 left in the third period as the host Quad City Mallards came from behind to defeat the Tulsa Oilers 2-1 Friday night.  With the victory, the Mallards (19-9-8, 46 points) extended their regulation unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) while the Oilers (19-22-3, 41) suffered a third straight regulation defeat and saw their winless streak stretch to six games (0-5-1).

Nikiforov snapped a 1-1 tie with a wrist shot from the right wing circle after the Mallards' Jeff Lee had evened the score with a wrister from the left wing circle at 2:37 of the third.

The Mallards found themselves in need of a comeback after Adam Pleskach's breakaway power play goal gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 1:47 of the second period.

The Mallards return to action tomorrow night in Missouri against the Mavericks.  The Mallards next play at home next Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Allen Americans.  That game is a Winning Wednesday presented by T.G.I. Friday's.  If the Mallards win next Wednesday, each fan in attendance will receive a free ticket to the Mallards' next Wednesday home game courtesy of T.G.I. Friday's.  After the game fans can join the Mallards at T.G.I. Friday's in Moline for a postgame party.

Governor Quinn, AT&T Announce 200 New Jobs Across Illinois

AT&T Adding New Technicians and Retail Workers in Illinois

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today joined AT&T Illinois to announce the communications company's plans to create about 200 new jobs across Illinois. The jobs include retail staff and technicians. With unemployment at its lowest point in almost five years, today's announcement is a part of Governor Quinn's agenda to create more jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward.

"Illinois is a technology hub for the nation and we're thrilled that AT&T is creating 200 new jobs in our state," Governor Quinn said. "As Illinois' economy continues making a comeback from the worst recession since the Great Depression, AT&T's commitment to Illinois and our workers is another step forward."

"With these new jobs, Illinois and AT&T are moving forward together," AT&T Illinois President Paul La Schiazza said. "Through Project Velocity IP (Internet Protocol), AT&T has invested billions in Illinois over the past few years and through it we plan to invest even more in our wired and wireless broadband networks to help our customers get the most out of the internet economy of today and tomorrow. As consumer demand drives the transition to broadband communications infrastructure, modern policies are essential to allow Illinois to enjoy the full economic benefits of the broadband world."

The new jobs will be located in cities throughout Illinois, including Chicago, Aurora, Elgin, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Libertyville, Champaign and Springfield.  AT&T currently employs more than 14,000 workers in Illinois. Since recovery from the recession began in January 2010, Illinois has added 280,000 private sector jobs. Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) Invites Public to its 52nd Annual Banquet

The 52nd Annual Banquet of the Quad City Engineering & Science Council will be held on Thursday, February 20th at The Lodge Hotel and Conference Center (900 Spruce Hills Drive, Bettendorf, Iowa) beginning at 5:00 P.M. with networking social hour, silent auction, displays, dinner, Order of the Engineer Inductions, scholarship presentations to high school students, annual awards and keynote speaker Donald Bossi, President of FIRST (an acronym for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, www.usfirst.org) .

 

The QCESC Annual Awards include Society of the Year, Junior and Senior Engineer and Scientist of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, STEM Teacher of the Year and STEM Volunteer of the Year.

As President of FIRST, successful technology executive Donald E. Bossi brings deep technical and management skills to the organization. Bossi, who has excelled in a 20-year career with several high technology companies, primarily in the fiber optics field, is now anxious to give back and help develop the next generation of innovators.

Starting his career as a research scientist, first at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and then at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), Bossi was a part of an advanced project at UTRC which was acquired by JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and he moved to the new company. After a series of promotions at JDSU, he became Vice President and General Manager for JDSU Electro-Optics Products. The Division grew tenfold during his involvement there. Bossi next served as Group President of JDSU Active Components Group for two years, and then as Group President, JDSU Transmission Products Group for two years. In 2005, Bossi joined Technology Ventures Partners to work with their high-tech portfolio companies. Bossi is the holder of four U.S. patents and author of numerous technical presentations. Louisiana First Lady Serves Donated Ham to Settle Outback Bowl Wager

Iowa Falls, Iowa ? Jan. 31, 2014 ? To conclude a friendly wager between Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad over the Outback Bowl, Louisiana First Lady Supriya Jindal today joined other volunteers serving ham donated by Iowa Select Farms for lunch at Grace Place Ministries in Monroe, La.
Each governor pledged to send 200 pounds of his state's quintessential food ? Iowa pork and Louisiana seafood ? to charities in both states if his team lost. After the University of Iowa Hawkeyes lost 21-14 to the Louisiana State University Tigers, Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation stepped up to fulfill Gov. Branstad's commitment, delivering 100 pounds of ham to Grace Place Ministries and 100 pounds of ham to the Food Bank of Iowa in Des Moines.
"This was a typical day at the soup kitchen, but more special because of Supriya Jindal," says Rhonda Grace, Founder and CEO of Grace Place Ministries. "She was so genuine and gracious, the ham tasted great, and we would like to say thanks again to Iowa Select Farms."
Approximately 150 people gathered at the Monroe soup kitchen today to enjoy sliced Iowa ham cooked in pineapple juice, along with green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, fruit salad, rolls and cakes. Today, Grace Place Ministries served seven of the 12 hams donated by Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, saving the other five hams for a future meal.

Salvation Army Reports Final Red Kettle Campaign Total

Davenport, IA: The Salvation Army of the Quad Cities once again met its Red Kettle Campaign goal thanks to the remarkable generosity of the Quad Cities community. A total of $752,561 was collected.

That goal consisted of direct mail, red kettle donations and year-end contributions. The $750,000 fund-raising goal accounts for approximately 60 percent of the local Salvation Army's operating budget that is generated from public support.

The funds will help The Salvation Army meet the demand for services for shelter, food, clothing and other basic human needs here in the Quad Cities.

"The Salvation Army's work is simply not possible without the people of this community who believe in what we do. And I'd like to share with them the greatest joys of the season: the warm embraces, tears of joy, handshakes and 'thank yous' from the thousands of families they helped serve," said Major Gary Felton, Quad Cities Coordinator.

During the 2013 Christmas season, The Salvation Army makes Christmas much brighter for thousands of families in need locally. And more than 4,000 volunteer hours were given in order to make all of the Christmas season's programs possible.

More than 5,000 toys (games, books, stuffed animals and toys of all kinds) were donated through the Angel Tree program. Through the 2013 Christmas Distribution program 2,032 children from 902 families had a happy Christmas morning. Food boxes were also distributed to an additional 405 households without children. Combined, The Salvation Army distributed food and gifts to 1,307 families totaling 4,623 people in need in the Quad Cities.

"The statistics mentioned are only a reflection of the many people whose lives were impacted because of YOU! We are grateful to everyone who supported this year's Christmas program, either by supporting the red kettles, purchasing gifts for families, volunteering your precious time, supporting our efforts by spreading the word and encouraging others to participate or praying for the program itself and those we have the honor of serving," said the Major.

Two special match programs contributed to the success of this year's campaign. Hiland Toyota made a large gift that was matched through the Toyota Dealer Match Program. And for the second year in a row, Von Maur matched all donations placed in the Red Kettles at the malls on December 22nd.

The Red Kettle Campaign, the oldest annual charitable fund raiser of its kind in the United States, helps raise money to support programs for the very neediest in communities nationwide providing toys for kids, food for the hungry and countless social service programs year-round. From its humble beginnings as a fund raiser started by a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco in 1891, the Red Kettle Campaign has grown into one of the most recognizable and important charitable outreach efforts in the United States.

Graduates from UW-Platteville with Master's Degree

PLATTEVILLE, WI (01/31/2014)(readMedia)-- The following local University of Wisconsin-Platteville graduate students were awarded their Master's degree in commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14, 2013:

Nels Chelstrom of Coal Valley, IL, earned a Master's degree in Engineering.

Amanda Hamerlinck of Rock Island, IL, earned a Master's degree in Engineering.

UW-Platteville awarded 589 diplomas, including 83 master's degrees, during its 191st commencement ceremony.

UW-Platteville, founded in 1846, is located in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, near the Iowa and Illinois borders. The university, the fastest-growing four-year school in the 13-college University of Wisconsin System, enrolls more than 8,000 undergraduate students.

Branstad, Reynolds take additional action to ease burden of propane shortage

Branstad declares proclamation of disaster and emergency; Administration launches new webpage as resource for those affected, applauds federal action

(DES MOINES)  - Gov. Branstad today declared a proclamation of disaster and energy emergency due to the record high demand for propane throughout the upper Midwest.  This Proclamation of Disaster Emergency activates the disaster response and recovery aspect of the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department's (HSEMD) Iowa Emergency Response Plan.  The proclamation may be found here.

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Human and Health Services (HHS) released a second Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) appropriation of $7,419,062 to the State of Iowa to help Iowa families heat their homes during the cold weather.  Additional information may be found here. The action comes following Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds writing President Obama expressing their concern with the propane shortage in Iowa and requested the President's engagement.

"We appreciate the collaboration of the federal government, Midwest Governors, and Texas officials on trying to resolve the propane shortage here in the Midwest," said Branstad.  "We have had productive conversations with the U.S. Secretary of Energy, U.S. Secretary of the Department of Transportation, Governor Rick Perry, other governors, members of the propane industry and Iowans to do everything possible to resolve this propane issue."

"We continue to urge the federal government to reduce the regulatory burden so propane can be transported to the Midwest states," Reynolds said. "We have driven collaboration across state lines from Texas to Washington, D.C. to make sure Iowans have the propane they need to heat their homes, businesses are able to fuel their operations and livestock producers can warm their animals."

Additionally, the Branstad-Reynolds administration launched the Propane Shortage and Heating Assistance Webpage.  This webpage is a one-stop shop with information regarding low-income home energy assistance program (LIHEAP), reductions in regulatory burdens to propane transport, energy, cost-saving tips and other resources for Iowans.

The propane shortage and cold weather conditions may prompt Iowans to seek alternative sources of heat. The Propane Shortage and Heating Assistance Webpage contains important safety information for those using space heaters and other heat sources.

QC Hashers present 4th Annual Red Dress Run

ROCK ISLAND, IL ? The Quad City Hash House Harriers - Dirty Pirate Chapter (formerly Raccoon Chapter) (or QCH3), a local group that is part of the loosely affiliated international organization, the Hash House Harriers, and a self described "Drinking Club with a Running Problem," will partner, Saturday, February 22, with local businesses for their 4th Annual Red Dress Run, in which all participants - male and female - don red dresses to show their spirit and draw attention to this annual charity event.

The run begins at 1p.m., at event sponsor, McManus Pub, 1401 7th Avenue, Moline, IL, and in true hashing tradition, will follow a trail determined that day and marked with chalk or flour by the "hares." The trail will include stops for games, contests, cold beverages, and socializing.
All proceeds and donations from this year's run will be go to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Flynn G. Schulz - an Iraq War veteran and beloved QCH3 hasher who died in August 2013.
Last year QCH3 raised almost $2000 for the American Heart Association, and pre-registration numbers indicate that amount will be exceeded this year.
The post-run celebration ("on-afters" in hash terms) will also take place at the McManus Pub, and will include food and a DJ.

About Hashing: Hashing was started in 1937 by British expat  - A.S.I. Gispert (or simply "G" as he was known to his friends), living in Malaysia, and is based on an old English game called Hares and Hounds. The group was named after the place many of the Kuala Lumpur-based Brits lived and ate - the "Hash House," with the addition of the typical Hounds and Hares team moniker "Harriers." Thus was born the first Hash House Harriers. After WWII, the practice started to spread worldwide, and then really caught on and began growing exponentially in the early '70s. There are currently about 2,000 active chapters (or kennels) worldwide, including about 400 in the U.S.

Over the years, the Red Dress Run has been very successful in raising millions of dollars for a wide variety of local charities.  The New Orleans Hash House Harriers attracted 7,000 participants to their Red Dress Run in 2010, raising more than $200,000 for 50 local charities.
