CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement on the passing of President Nelson Mandela:

"Nelson Mandela once said, 'Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.'  Few 20th century figures changed the world as much as Nelson Mandela.

"Despite 27 years behind bars as a political prisoner, Mandela never lost his optimism, his resolve or his generous heart. A hero of democracy, he earned the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, 2002 U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom and eternal gratitude of freedom-loving people everywhere.

"As President, Mandela guided his nation out of the darkness of apartheid, provided free healthcare for children and opposed the death penalty. He could have been content after his Presidency to enjoy much-deserved time with friends and family, but he continued crusading for better schools, AIDS awareness and democracy across Africa.

"We join the people of South Africa and the world in mourning this great loss.

"The vision and spirit of Nelson Mandela live on."

The "Make this holiday historic!" campaign is designed to raise awareness of the many unique holiday events held at historic sites during a time when families are looking for memorable ways to celebrate.

Marlborough, Massachusetts (December 5, 2013) - This year, individuals and families looking for unique, memorable ways to celebrate the holidays can find them on The History List of holiday events at historic sites at www.thehistorylist.com/holidays

The list is part of the "Make this holiday historic!" campaign, which recognizes holiday events at historic sites and in historic buildings across the country, ranging from a dinner in a Victorian mansion to a guided tour of historic neighborhoods by lantern light.

"Every December millions of Americans traipse to the mall or to the movies," said Lee Wright, founder of The History List.  "But when we conducted research with families this fall about their plans for the holidays, we learned that nearly half would be interested in finding out more about holiday events at historic sites if they only knew about them."

The "Make this holiday historic!" campaign is designed to raise awareness of the many unique holiday events held at historic sites during a time when families are looking for memorable ways to celebrate.

Some of the many listed include :

  • Learn the history of winter holiday traditions on a lantern-lit stroll through Newport, Rhode Island's streets with the Newport Historical Society and hear how people did--or didn't--celebrate the holidays.
  • Harriet Stowe & Mark Twain's Olde Fashioned Christmas, with tours and horse-drawn carriage rides, in Hartford, Connecticut at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.
  • A holiday lantern tour at Hale Farm & Village where you'll be transported back to Christmas Eve, 1863, the third year of the American Civil War.  From the Western Reserve Historical Society in Bath, Ohio.
  • Visit beautifully-restored historic 19th Century homes decked out for the holidays on the 22nd Annual Holiday House Tour with the New Bedford Preservation Society in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
  • The Deadwood Cowboy Christmas Ball in Deadwood, South Dakota, an old-fashioned cowboy dance with some of the Black Hills' best performers playing holiday favorites.
  • See people and events from Houston's past come alive at The Heritage Society's 51st Annual Candlelight Tour in Houston, Texas.
  • Capture the holiday spirit with hearth cooks, guides and educators in a month-long series of traditional festive activities at Historic Deerfield in Massachusetts.
  • Aluminum Christmas trees became popular in the 1960s, and a Wisconsin business, The Aluminum Specialty Company, became the largest manufacturer of these trees. On display at the Wisconsin Historical Museum in Madison.
  • Escape the frenzy of a modern Christmas with gingerbread, roasted chestnuts, music, dance, and a sleigh ride, and meet Father Christmas and Santa Claus at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts.

These and many more are listed at www.thehistorylist.com/holidays.

The "Make this holiday historic!" campaign is open to all organizations holding history-related events.  It includes free materials the organization can use to promote their holiday events, along with a copy of the consumer research report.  Organizations can download the materials and add their events at no cost: www.thehistorylist.com/the-holiday-campaign-for-history.

The History List (www.TheHistoryList.com) was launched last year as a way to help historic sites, historical societies, preservation organizations, history museums, house museums, living history sites, re-enactor groups, and other history organizations get the word out about their history-related exhibits and events, such as reenactments, walks and talks, author appearances, celebrations, and more.

Introduced first in the Boston area, The History List has grown to be the largest list of history-related events taking place across the country.  Organizations add their own events.  There is no cost to participate.

It was 14 degrees, nearly twice as cold as usual for a typical November in Iowa.  But more than 5,800 people still showed up at Living History Farms at the break of dawn to run seven miles across the snow-covered farm fields, ice-caked streams and muddy ravines.  As if the course wasn't challenging enough, many runners wore costumes.  I skipped the costume, but I was still eager to join this crazy bunch as they stumbled across fields and climbed up creek banks.

"Why?" my friends and family are still asking, probably because none of them run.  I guess the easiest answer is this: common values.  Runners at the Living History Farms race come in every size, age and ability.  They live in other cities, states, even countries.  But on that day, in that event, we all had a common goal; to enjoy nature while having fun.  To run.  To breathe.  To sweat.  To help each other get across the finish line, no matter the obstacles.

At one particularly tough spot on the course, I found myself slipping, trying to climb out of a muddy ravine, unable to get a foothold, sweat from the previous four miles plastered hair to the side of my face and froze.  Hardly attractive.  Yet from out of nowhere, a hand from an older runner reached out to pull me up.  "You got this," he said, then turned and kept running.  When I cleared the edge, I turned around and helped a much-younger girl get out of the ravine.  She helped a young boy clear the ravine.  Over and over again, people worked together to climb out of the frozen ravine.

If only we could channel that same spirit, offer that same hand to reach across the divide that separates consumers from today's farmers.   Having lived in Iowa for a half-century and grown up on a century hog farm, I know there is room for, and a need for, diversity; some farmers will raise animals on a pasture, others in a feedlot or hog barn.  All are farmers.

Farmers like Andrew Pittz set their own pace.  Pittz, who started the nation's first commercial aronia berry farm, talked about his business model during a recent Farm Bureau annual meeting education seminar.

What was most surprising wasn't just the marketing or production hurdles this young Loess Hills sixth-generation farmer has weathered, but the perspectives of some media folks he's encountered, who too often portray farming as a race for profit, rather than a journey that brings all Iowans together for a common goal.  Pittz says folks are surprised to hear that Farm Bureau encourages organic farmers, niche businesses as well as conventional agriculture.  To him, the end-goal is obvious: more choices at the grocery store.  "Sometimes, it makes sense to be conventional (ag), and sometimes, it makes sense for your farm to be organic.  For us, competing in this market, we are taking on multi-national corporations, so it really makes sense for us to be organic on the marketing side. And it really pays off in the market place," says Pittz.

Judging by the 'standing room only' crowd who came to Des Moines to hear Pittz and other innovative ag leaders, farmers are good at reaching out to others, supporting new ideas that come along.   They're not 'in it to win it', but rather to learn from each other.  To finish well.  To find common ground along the way.  To "run" with honor and embrace diversity.

So the big question is can you?
