INDIANOLA, IOWA (May 22, 2019) — Mollie Juehring was recognized at Simpson College's Honors Convocation ceremony on April 24, 2019. Mollie received the Sven and Mildred Lekberg Music Award. The junior receiving this award is dedicated to their development as musicians and artists, a passion for music, participation in a wide variety of endeavors in the music department, and a positive leader as a musician and colleague among their peers. Mollie's parents are Diane and Lee Juehring.

IOWA CITY, IOWA (May 22/2019) — More than 100 Iowa City-area elementary-school students participated in Healthy LifeStars, an initiative from the University of Iowa College of Public Health staffed by current UI students that fights childhood obesity by encouraging students to be more active and eat more nutritious food. Childhood obesity has become a serious public health-issue in the US, as more and more children are classified as significantly overweight.

INDIANOLA, IOWA (May 22, 2019) — Maggie Flowers of Rock Island participated in the annual Simpson College Research and Creativity Symposium held on April 25, 2019. This is a multi-disciplinary event that showcases outstanding student work through the presentation of papers, performances, posters, and panel-discussions. Maggie's parents are Randall Flowers and Mary Flowers.

PELLA, IOWA (May 22, 2019) — Local students were among 198 Central College students graduating with bachelor's degrees in May 2019.

The following students received their degrees:

Will Daniels of Geneseo received a bachelor's degree in Biology.

Parker Hill of Bettendorf received a bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Studies.

Cara Mack of Davenport received a bachelor's degree in Business Management.

WASHINGTON DC (May 22, 2019) — Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles "Chuck" Grassley of Iowa and Ranking Member Ron Wyden of Oregon today announced the formation of a bipartisan Finance Committee working group that will consider the issue of federal paid family-leave policy.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 22, 2019) — Unfortunately, Senator Kamala Harris is postponing her trip to Iowa this week due to expected votes in the Senate on federal disaster-relief funding. The measure would provide disaster-relief funds that likely will include Iowa, California, and Puerto Rico. Much of Western Iowa, where Sen Harris was set to visit, has been inundated with record-flooding this year.
