SPRINGFIELD, IL (09/04/2015)(readMedia)-- MARSEILLES, Ill. - Approximately 90 Soldiers from around the state met at the Illinois National Guard Marseilles Training Center in Marseilles, Illinois, to compete in the 2015 The Adjutant General's (TAG) Rifle and Pistol Match, Aug. 21 to 23.

The competition test Soldiers' marksmanship in a variety of events that reflect combat marksmanship tactics and skills. It also tests movement, weapons and target transition using an event similar to national level matches.

Shooters are rated as teams and individuals using the pistol and rifle, evaluated on a combined arms, 3-gun match in which the Soldiers fired the pistol, rifle and shotgun.

The top 20 individual shooters received the Governor's Twenty Tab, which they can wear on their uniforms. The top three teams and individuals of each event received a plaque to display their accomplishments.

Winners of the TAG Match may be selected to join the Illinois National Guard's Marksman Team. The teams must select two new shooters to compete in regional and national events annually.

CHICAGO- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded the State of Illinois one of sixteen available four-year grants to prevent overdose deaths related to prescription opioids as part of the CDC's Prescription Drug Overdose: Prevention for States program. The grant is worth $3.6 million over four years.

This funding will support Illinois over the next four years in implementing prevention strategies to improve safe prescribing practices, reverse the trend on the prescription drug overdose epidemic and give priority to drivers of the prescription drug overdose epidemic, particularly the misuse and inappropriate prescribing of opioid pain relievers.

The funding supports the following strategies:

1.     Enhance and maximize Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs;

2.     Improve opioid prescribing practices;

3.     Implement prevention efforts at the state and community level aimed at preventing overuse, misuse, abuse and overdose; and

4.     Implement "Rapid Response Projects" to address new and emerging problems related to prescription drug overdose.

While the primary purpose of the funding is the prevention of prescription drug overdoses, it also presents opportunities of advance surveillance and evaluation efforts to understand and respond to the increase in heroin overdose deaths, especially at the intersection of prescription opioid abuse and heroin use. As a funded state, Illinois will track heroin morbidity and mortality as an outcome of its work and have opportunities to evaluate policies with implications for preventing both prescription drug and heroin overdoses.

Receipt of this grant allows Illinois to focus on enhancing and empowering community-level prevention and implementing health system improvements to reduce overdose risk. The community interventions will include coordinating intensive prevention efforts in high-burden communities and working with local health departments to disseminate analyses of prescribing and overdose trends. As part of a peer-review function of the PMP Advisory Committee selected members will participate in drug utilization review and adherence to national standards on opioid utilization.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that the Muscatine Municipal Airport will receive a $3,747,117 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant program. The funding will be used for full depth reconstruction to rehabilitate 5,500 feet of the existing runway pavement that has reached the end of its useful life.

"Our local airports play a critical role in allowing our communities to grow, as well as fuel additional economic development in the region," said Loebsack. "I am pleased that Muscatine Municipal Airport is receiving this competitive grant, which will allow the airport to grow safely and effectively."

Iowa City, IA - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between the P5+1 nations and Iran.

"From the beginning, I have made it clear that I believe it is unacceptable for Iran to be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. And it is as important as ever that we work towards that commonly held goal. Since it was announced, I have evaluated the agreement and consulted with constituents, administration officials, and experts in the field to learn more about what implementation of this deal will look like.

"The end goal of any agreement must be to prevent a nuclear weapons capable Iran and ensure the safety of the American people. My decision regarding this multinational agreement is based on whether what is before us is the best way to achieve that goal. It has become increasingly clear in the weeks since the agreement was presented to Congress and the American people that the opponents of the agreement have yet to offer a credible and effective alternative. Without any meaningful alternative, I have decided that I will support the deal and vote in favor of it moving forward. Combined with other options that remain on the table if Iran does not comply with the agreement, this framework, which is far from perfect, is a beginning and presents the best path forward to ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons."

MOLINE, Ill. - Midwest Technical Institute will host its fall open house for prospective students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sept. 12 at MTI's Moline campus, 3620 Avenue of the Cities, Moline.

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour MTI's classrooms and labs, meet with faculty and staff and receive valuable

information about the school's enrollment process and financial aid opportunities. Attendees will also be eligible for MTI

apparel giveaways and door prizes, and complimentary food and beverages will be provided.

There is no cost to attend the open house and those with families or young children are also encouraged to attend.

Much like MTI's annual spring open house, the fall event is designed to provide prospective students with a

comprehensive look at MTI's course and program offerings, and how a vocational degree can equip graduates with the

real-world skills to succeed as members of today's ever-evolving workforce.

Founded in 1995, MTI strives to provide area students with the best in hands-on, workforce training for a number of in-

demand skilled labor careers, including those in welding, HVAC, medical assisting, dental assisting, cosmetology, truck

driving and more.

MTI's Director of Marketing Stacey Wierman believes the open house is beneficial in offering interested students a

comprehensive look at all the available options when deciding how to best further their education.

"The open house offers a great opportunity to see what a hands-on training program looks like," Wierman said. "Opening

our doors to the community is something we enjoy doing. We want students to see that at MTI we are building futures and

changing lives."

Interested students should RSVP for the open house prior to the event. For more information or to RSVP, contact the

Moline campus at (309) 277-7900.
Quad Cities rides two-out, seven-run rally in the fifth inning to 11-5 win over Kane County
DAVENPORT, Iowa (September 4, 2015) - With seven two-out runs in the fifth inning, the Quad Cities River Bandits broke a 2-2 tie in an eventual 11-5 victory over the Kane County Cougars, and all nine River Bandits batters had a hit to help the team clinch the best overall regular season record in the Midwest League for the first time in 23 years in front of 3,649 at Modern Woodmen Park Thursday night.
Four River Bandits had two hits to help Quad Cities (41-25 second half, 86-48 overall) clinch the league's best record for the first time since a franchise-best 91-46 regular season mark in 1992. The River Bandits also had seven extra-base hits among 13 total to bounce back from consecutive losses for the first time since a season-long six-game losing streak Aug. 9-15. After allowing two runs in the first three innings, River Bandits right-hander Joshua James (7-4) recovered to scatter eight hits, two walks and a hit batter with five strikeouts in six innings, lowering his ERA to 2.63 - the best among Houston Astros minor leaguers.
In the first inning, both of the River Bandits' hits were for extra bases, as center fielder Bobby Boyd tripled down the first-base line with one out and scored on a two-out RBI double to right field by right fielder Ramon Laureano against Cougars starter Ethan Elias (11-6). James allowed Kane County (45-21, 81-53) to tie the game in the second inning. Second baseman Henry Castillo and designated hitter Dawel Lugo each singled, while a throwing error by second baseman Jose Fernandez put both runners in scoring position with nobody out. Catcher Michael Perez struck out and third baseman Joe Munoz grounded to shortstop Kristian Trompiz, who threw to catcher Marlon Avea at home plate to retire Castillo. Cougars right fielder Victor Reyes then singled to center to score Lugo from second for a 1-1 tie.
In the top of the third, the Cougars took their only lead, as center fielder Colin Bray and first baseman Marty Herum each singled to start the inning. Left fielder Cody Regis flied out to right for the first out, and although neither runner made a full attempt to advance, Laureano's throw bounced into the River Bandits dugout on the third-base side to score Bray and send Herum to third base with nobody out. James then slammed the door on the rally, striking out Castillo and Lugo swinging, keeping the score at a 2-1 deficit.
Quad Cities tied in the fourth inning, as designated hitter Drew Ferguson doubled to left-center field, went to third base on a groundout and scored on a two-out throwing error by Munoz. With a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth inning, left fielder Jason Martin walked and was retired at second base on Boyd's bunt. Boyd then stole second base and went to third base on first baseman Bryan Muñiz's fly ball to right field. With two outs, Laureano tripled to left-center field to score Boyd for a 3-2 lead. Ferguson and Fernandez both drew walks against Elias, who exited with the bases loaded. Jose Martinez, the first man in from the pen for Kane County, walked Trompiz to score Laureano and increase the Quad Cities lead to 4-2. Third baseman Wander Franco drove in a pair with a single to right field, and catcher Marlon Avea followed that with a two-run double on a line drive down the left-field line to make it 8-2. Martin, batting for the second time in the inning, singled to right-center field to score Avea and cap the inning that closed with a 9-2 Quad Cities lead.
Muñiz scored the River Bandits' final two runs. After a leadoff infield single in the sixth inning, two wils pitches put him at third base before Fernandez hit an RBI single to center field. In the bottom of the eighth, Muñiz hit a booming solo home run - his third in eight days and fourth in the Midwest League - over the Modern Woodmen Berm in left field to give Quad Cities an 11-2 edge. Kane County rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth against Angel Heredia on Reyes' first career home run - and the first allowed by Heredia in more than a year - that tallied three runs to make it 11-5, but Heredia got the next three batters to ground out to Trompiz to end the game.
The River Bandits conclude their season series with playoff-bound Kane County with their regular season home finale at 7 p.m. Friday. Right-hander Brock Dykxhoorn (8-4, 3.72) will start for Quad Cities, while left-hander Josh Taylor (3-3, 3.54) starts for the Cougars.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits will have fireworks following the game Friday, when the team will be celebrating  Fan Appreciation Night, presented by Bierstube, with Friday Fireworks presented by Smart Toyota of Quad Cities, WLLR and WQAD. Individual tickets are on sale at the River Bandits box office and online at riverbandits.com. Ticket plans of 12 to 70 games - which include free parking, reserved seats, merchandise discounts, and guaranteed giveaways - are available by calling 563-324-3000.
