Bacon, Bacon, Bacon

Bacon is a popular topic everywhere right now so we thought it would be fun to feature the Quad Cities' best bacon bits in an online video as part of our social media campaign.

Do you have a bacon dish on your menu or sell a bacon-related product?  Or anything bacon-related?  We want to know!  Send them to David Breisch at dbreisch@visitquadcities.com

Behind the Scenes

Our other new video series idea is to feature some places from behind the scenes where the public is not normally allowed to go.  Does your business have something cool that fits the bill?  Send them to David Breisch at dbreisch@visitquadcities.com

Nationwide "Fuel Your Community" campaign to help save lives

PEORIA, Ill. (Sept. 29, 2014) - During October, Suburban Propane is joining the American Red Cross to raise awareness of the constant need for blood and platelet donations with the first nationwide "Fuel Your Community" campaign. All presenting blood and platelet donors at Red Cross blood drives and donation centers during October will be eligible to win one $5,000 Visa gift card as part of the campaign, courtesy of Suburban Propane.

While the October "Fuel Your Community" campaign is the first nationwide effort, it's the sixth time Suburban Propane and the Red Cross have partnered to raise awareness since 2012. Most recently, in June, Suburban Propane helped to collect more than 750 blood donations as part of an 11-state partnership from Maine to South Carolina. During the October campaign, Suburban Propane will sponsor an advertising campaign to raise greater awareness for the constant need for blood and platelet donations, and its employees will volunteer at blood drives and give blood or platelets themselves.

"Suburban Propane chose to support the Red Cross because of the impact it makes in people's lives every day," said Mark Wienberg, Suburban's Chief Operating Officer. "Some of our employees have been directly affected by the need for donated blood and they inspire us to make a difference in the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with the Red Cross in our first nationwide effort."

From Kristine Smith, a mother receiving blood after the birth of her son, to Janet Nitchman standing by her husband's side while he receives transfusions after a liver transplant, the Red Cross has touched the lives of many Suburban Propane employees. "I am appreciative of all blood donors out there, they really do save lives," said Smith.

"The support of Suburban Propane is welcomed and tremendously appreciated as the Red Cross aims to maintain sufficient blood supplies for hospital patients all year long," said Shelly Heiden CEO, Heart of America Blood Services Region. "We hope this campaign encourages more people to give the gift of life."

To schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). For more information about the campaign, visit redcrossblood.org/suburbanpropane.

On Sunday, Oct 5, 600 members of church congregations and other organizations from the Quad Cities area will be walking six miles to raise money and awareness for hunger issues.  This is the annual CROP Hunger Walk, one of 76 in Iowa and one of 72 in Illinois - but the only one in the country that is a bi-state walk!  Our goal is to raise over $60,000 and to raise more than our counterparts in Des Moines.

Visit us at www.facebook.com/qccropwalk for more information.

Since moving from Brooklyn to Davenport a little more than a year, David Balluff and Lopeti Etu have searched long and hard to find the perfect space for their eclectic hand-made clothing and hat (and other stuff) store.

A brief residency in cramped quarters at Bucktown came to an end awhile ago, and the pair have been busy fulfilling mail order requests in their apartment since. But they finally found what they were looking for in The Market building on W. 2nd Street.

"It's a great location for us, with gigantic windows and close to the Farmers' Market, the Figge, the bike trail and other things going on down here," said Balluff, who manufactures organic cotton and bamboo silkscreen shirts, dresses, sarongs, onsies, tank tops and other fine products under the name General Assembly.

His partner, Lopeti Etu, creates hand-blocked hats of all sorts, under the brand Lopeti Etu Millinery.

Both of their complete lines of products, as well as those of other local and far-flung original designers, will be housed at the new L&D 15 limited edition clothing, accessories and housewares shop.

Balluff said the fact the building was known as the New York Hat Company in the 1910s, made it seem like the perfect home for he and Lopeti's vision.

"We're bringing back not only hat manufacturing, but we were recently in New York ourselves," he said.

Etu and Balluff plan to reach out to artists and designers both locally and internationally, including open calls for artists/makers and other creatives to present new products. That will happen closer to the studio's opening.

"We're trying to build something that gives back to the community," Balluff said. "Our target market isn't young or old, rich or poor. It's people who appreciate things made by hand."

He calls this "retail 2.0" - meaning L&D 15 won't be just a place to shop, but a living workshop and community gathering space.

Part of their interior work that includes renovating floors and painting. They are using lumber from Davenport Public Works' urban wood utilization program. They plan to open sometime in November.

Congressional Candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks (https://www.millermeeks.comwill speak to the Rotary Club of Davenport on Monday, Sept. 29.
The meeting is at noon at the Outing Club, 2109 Brady Street, Davenport.

Des Moines, IA - Braley for Iowa Campaign Manager Sarah Benzing issued the following statement after tonight's US Senate debate:

"The big story of the night is that Joni Ernst admitted during the debate that her personhood constitutional amendment would outlaw abortion and ban common forms of birth control, while Bruce believes that medical decisions are best left to women and their doctors.

"Tonight's debate displayed the clear contrast between Bruce Braley's work to find common sense solutions that move our state forward and Joni Ernst's radical Tea Party ideas that would take us backwards and are wrong for Iowa.

"While Bruce Braley has spent his career protecting Social Security, Joni Ernst would privatize it and put it in the hands of Wall Street bankers. While Bruce Braley continues working to strengthen Medicare, Joni Ernst supports plans that would end Medicare as we know it and leave Iowa's seniors out in the cold. While Bruce Braley will fight to increase the federal minimum wage, Joni Ernst doesn't even think there should be one, believing that Iowans deserve just $7.25 an hour and can survive on $15,000 a year.  And tonight Joni Ernst tried to deny that she supports a plan to impose a 23 percent national sales tax on all Americans, raising taxes on gas, groceries, and everything you buy.

"The contrast between the two candidates has never been more clear."

Des Moines, IA - US Sen. Tom Harkin issued the following statement after the Iowa Senate debate tonight:

"Bruce Braley was the clear winner of tonight's debate. Bruce did a great job showing Iowans who he is and what he stands for - someone who grew up in small town Brooklyn, Iowa, worked hard to put himself through college, and has never forgotten where he's come from. Bruce showed a command of the issues that matter to Iowans and demonstrated clearly that he'll never stop working to stand up for Iowa in the US Senate."

Two stories - an ocean apart - recently gripped America. ISIS revealed what pure evil looks like after the beheadings of innocent Americans, women and children. An elevator video of Ray Rice and his future wife revealed what domestic violence really looks like. These two unrelated stories - when combined - are what my family has dealt with since 1999 when my sister Lynnette was tortured by her abusive husband, murdered in their Ohio home, and discarded in garbage dumpsters throughout Michigan.

Lynnette's killer is free today. I asked my US Congressman, Bruce Braley, for his help in stopping the early prison release and federal interstate transfer of Lynnette's killer. Mr. Braley did nothing. I've proposed a two-sentence Lynnette's Law that could protect society from vicious killers; our government's first duty is to protect Americans from violent threats, foreign and domestic. Bruce Braley has refused for more than three years now to even respond to my repeated requests for his help on this law. This motivated me to enter this US Senate race and offer Iowans a better choice on November 4.

Beyond my personal mission of domestic violence awareness, prevention, and government funding (and getting tough on violent crime), I have three key solutions to the dysfunction that is Washington DC:

  1. Term Limits - Both parties are broken, blaming the other without solving our real problems. Some describe me as a JFK Democrat, but I'm a lifelong independent...just like 38% of registered Iowa voters. I'm working to represent all 3.1 million Iowans in DC for one term of six years. Two terms should be the limit.

  2. Energy Made in the USA - Iowans benefit from cheap electricity made mostly from American fossil fuels. Bruce Braley voted for a carbon tax that would destroy Iowa's middle class, raising energy costs by thousands for every Iowan. I'm fighting for careers in domestic energy, often union protected, paying $60,000-100,000 per year; Mr. Braley's vision is part-time work at $10.10/hour. Low-cost American energy is essential to the return of Made in the USA products and jobs. I support renewables like Iowa's wind industry, while promoting conservation as the best solution to protect our environment. Mr. Braley's top dark-money supporter is Tom Steyer, who made his billions from the fossil fuels he now opposes for political gain.

  3. Accountability - Voters are desperate for a leader who supports our US Constitution and the rule of law (Google "Dave Brat"), while fighting big government waste and the endless DC scandals. My fight for accountability is well documented at www.Life101byBob.com . During Mr. Braley's eight years in DC, our US debt has exploded from $8 to $18 Trillion! Finally, Mr. Braley shamefully initiated the illegal IRS targeting of conservatives. Let's replace the IRS with a Fair Tax.

I am running to offer Iowans common sense solutions to some of the toughest problems America has faced in my lifetime. Please visit www.BobQ2014.com to learn more about your third and best choice for US Senate.

Most respectfully,

Bob Quast for Term Limits

Independent Candidate for US Senate in Iowa
