Retail boutique L&D15 will not only be hosting its second Saturday Night Social on October 24th, from 7-10pm, but will also be hosting a number of other fun activities this fall.
Saturday Night Socials were conceived of as an event where our friends and customers could shop, socialize and have a cocktail in a fun, relaxed environment. Inspired by salons, speakeasys and soirées, It's a chance to try on dresses, hats, print a t-shirt, or just browse and have a good time with friends. Each Saturday Night Social at L&D15 features a different complimentary cocktail.
L&D15 will also be participating in a new event, Third Thursdays, with many other businesses in downtown Davenport. "We love giving our customers a creative experience, so we will be silkscreening both on paper and on t-shirts with customers for Third Thursday," explains co-owner David Balluff.
This month L&D15 will also be unveiling a Day of the Dead ofrenda, or altar, created by area artist Carlos Durán. More details to be announced. In mid-November, L&D15 will celebrate it's first year anniversary with a special event on November 14.
"L&D15 exists because we wanted to create a space that supports our vision of the future of retail - a venue that not only allows us to produce and sell our own products in house, but also supports the greater artistic community," explains Balluff. "We want to support creative entrepreneurship in the Quad Cities."
Both Balluff and his partner, Lopeti Etu, have previous experience as makers themselves. Balluff started t-shirt line General Assembly in 2009, and Etu is a milliner by trade, and hand makes the majority of the hats in their shop.
L&D15 is located at 520 W. 2nd Street in downtown Davenport and is open Tuesday - Saturday  from 10am - 7pm, Sunday 11am - 5pm. For more information, visit landd15.com, or call 563-484-0415.

ARTIST/MUSICIAN BRETT WHITACRE TO EXHIBIT AT L&D15 - JULY 25 - AUGUST 24
OPENING RECEPTION SAT. JULY 25, 7 - 10pm
L&D15 is very pleased to announce that artist and drummer for The Legendary Shack Shakers, Brett Whitacre, will be exhibiting at their gallery/boutique beginning on July 25th.
Opening the same day as the Bix Race and the final dip in Davenport, L&D15 thinks Brett Whitacre's Maximum Wage artist reception is going to draw art lovers downtown that evening. "Brett is going to be here, and we are hoping that by having our event concurrently with all these other great events in the downtown, that we can encourage locals and visitors alike to walk around downtown and have a good time," explains L&D15 co-owner David Balluff.
Brett Whitacre is a self taught and colorblind artist living and working in Northern Illinois. He has been producing works using a reverse glass painting technique for 12 years. Upon moving to Chicago in 2001, he began walking, biking, and driving the alleyways of the city seeking various discarded materials to use as a canvas. Pre-digital televisions, hard shell luggage, and storm windows were his favorite finds. Settling on his love for the crispness and pristine of paint on glass, found window panes became his main focus. Brett's work today is on windows but also tempered glass panels for a more modern feel. The subject matter varies greatly as his interests are broad. When asked why he paints what he does, he'll say "All these things are really cool...I like em".

The Figge Art Museum throws it's annual gala tonight (June 5th), and the owners of L&D15 have been busy making sure the night's paper theme is well represented.

Designer and co-owner of L&D15, Lopeti Etu, created not only the chandeliers and table centerpieces for the event's main floor banquet, but he also designed and made several of the attendees' clothing - all out of paper.

Etu designed and sewed a total of five custom paper items - a man's tuxedo jacket, a paneled bustier, a sixties-era women's jacket, a dazzling Roaring Twenties style flapper dress in gold and red, and a black Italian crepe paper strapless ball gown.

Etu worked most of May on these items, starting the Monday after the store's Kentucky Derby party. Etu is on the Figge Art Museum Gala committee, and volunteered to create both the centerpieces and suspended chandeliers for the event. The geometric chandeliers were made from recycled cardboard boxes, while the flowers sitting on each of the banquet tables were made from a lighter paper, then individually hand dipped.

L&D15 is a new kind of retail for the Quad Cities, featuring artists and designers from the area, as well as from other parts of the country. In addition, owners David Balluff and Lopeti Etu use part of the shop as a workspace, hand making custom hats, silkscreening t-shirts and designing clothing.

L&D15 is open daily, from 10am - 7pm, and is located at 520 West 2nd St. between Scott and Western in downtown Davenport. For more information, visit us on Facebook at facebook.com/ landd15 or at landd15.com

Nathan Cunningham, a graduating senior at Central High School and a part of  Davenport's recently formed Creative Arts Academy, will be exhibiting Light Way at L&D15 from May 30th through June 29. L&D15 will hold an artists' reception for Light Way on Saturday, May 30th, from 7-10pm.
Cunningham's photos focus on urban landmarks of the Quad Cities and action shots of local skateboarders. "I have noticed a lot of hidden potential buried within the core of the Quad Cities, and in terms of city life, I feel I did a good job capturing the area's vitality."
Cunningham was first introduced to David Balluff and Lopeti Etu of L&D15 last fall, when students from CAA were invited to volunteer their time as the owners finalized preparations for the store's opening. Cunningham soon became L&D15's unofficial photographer, snapping pictures for the store's monthly art openings, for the grand opening fashion show, and for other events in the past six months.

L&D15 opens its second monthly art exhibit with Davenport art teacher David Houk. Bind is loosely tied together by family connections, paintings in the exhibit are steeped in memories of family and childhood.

"I try to express personal meaning through my paintings; it's easy to let doubt take over. My students continue to influence me. Their imagination, fearlessness and bold use of color inspire me every day. My family and friends help me shape how I view the world and are the driving force behind my artistic choices."

There will be a reception for David Houk on Saturday, February 14th starting at 7pm. Hors d'ouvres and drinks will be provided. The exhibition runs through March 15th.

"A part of this show is a tribute to my great grandfather. While reminiscing about my grandfather I was led to his old tackle box. These objects have special meaning to me. The lures, hooks and Copenhagen tin remind me of the times I spent with him. I wanted to give them a new purpose, be perceived in a new way and seen on a larger scale."

"In today's culture I have reservations about guns; they're controversial; however, painting guns is my way of showing my appreciation for my father."

Rounding out the show are portraits of my loved ones. The purpose was to capture their personality so I painted them from memory.

David Houk is an artist and art educator in Davenport, Iowa. He is a graduate of St. Ambrose University and has been teaching in the Davenport School District for 11 years.

Newly opened retail boutique L&D15 brings a bit of exclusive celebrity bling to the Quad Cities for the holidays with a stunning jewelry collection from New York designer Me&Ro.

Me&Ro has developed a strong celebrity following throughout the years including Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Kate Moss, Sheryl Crow, and Mary-Louise Parker among others. Me&Ro can be seen on the pages of many magazines including W, InStyle, Elle, Marie Claire, Glamour, Town & Country, and Vogue.

The Me&Ro collection at L&D15 consists of men's and women's jewelry in sterling silver and 10K gold, adorned with rubies, black diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones.  We have selected pendants, rings and cuff links with a lot of character for the guys, while the women's pieces are more delicate, and include earrings, bracelets and pendant necklaces stamped with floral and lotus petal motifs.

Me&Ro's art is inspired by the human need both to adorn and to communicate through jewelry. Equally important is the power jewelry has to express the human values of strength, love, and faith. Me&Ro emphasizes the wear-ability of its designs, even when working with materials that verge on excessive. Known for its stackable rings, hammered bangles, personal amulets, and hoops of all sizes, Me&Ro pursues an aesthetic of simple beauty.
