84/48: Pop-up Exhibit of New Works by David Balluff
Local artist David Balluff will be exhibiting 84 new paintings in a "pop-up" show at Desoto Pottery Studio, 12-7pm, May 3 & 4, with a closing night party May 5, from 5-11pm.
The 84/48 exhibit is the culmination of ten months' intensive focus on painting for Balluff. "After some fairly major upheavals in 2016, I felt I needed to take time to focus on my core interests. These paintings are the result of being 'hunkered in my studio bunker' for long periods of time."
Among the work to be shown will be Long Story II, which is comprised of more than seventy  paintings on 5" wood squares. The work is meant to be displayed in no particular configuration, allowing for the story itself to be changed repeatedly.
In a departure from previous works, Balluff has been working recently on a number of large canvases. "I began the first Long Story series in 2004, and spent about ten years on it, which suited me, as I found myself moving a lot after grad school. I could load up a small box with 30-40 paintings and be quite mobile. But after completing Long Story II, I felt the need to work larger, and really work on developing narratives within the painting frame."
84/48 is a preview of things to come, as Balluff will be exhibiting next at Quad City Arts.
Desoto Pottery Studio is located at 2324 3rd Ave. in Rock Island. Parking is available in the old liquor store lot across from Small Wonders.
