Congresswoman Bustos promised to give up 10 percent of her salary if elected to Congress. Will she pay up?

If Bustos is not willing to keep her word on a simple campaign promise,  how are voters supposed to trust her on anything?

EAST MOLINE, Ill.?It has been a rough week for Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, whose campaign has repeatedly claimed she "misspoke" when she promised the Chicago Tribune she would give up 10 percent of her pay if elected to Congress. It appears that Bustos has no intention of following through on her promise.

The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus took her to task for this on Saturday. The Peoria Journal Star followed up with severe criticism on Sunday after Bustos ran away from reporters last week.

Still, the Schilling campaign is holding out hope that Bustos will do the right thing and follow through on her campaign promise to give up 10 percent of her pay.

Jon Schweppe, communications director at Bobby Schilling for Congress, released the following statement:

"Hard-working taxpayers are wondering?is Congresswoman Bustos planning on paying up? It was crystal clear in that interview that she committed to giving up 10 percent of her pay as a way to show 'skin in the game.' That was certainly a nice gesture?now she needs to show that she meant it. If Congresswoman Bustos is not willing to keep her word on a simple campaign promise like this, how are voters supposed to trust her on anything? We are calling on Congresswoman Bustos to do the right thing and show that she has at least an ounce of integrity by following through on her promise to give up 10 percent of her pay.

"Bobby Schilling didn't need an opponent's campaign to remind him of his promises. He followed through. Bobby rejected his congressional pension and health care plans, and he voted to cut his office budget by more than 10 percent. Following those cuts, he returned an additional $110,000 surplus from his office budget to the taxpayers. Bobby voted against all pay increases for Members of Congress, and he even signed on to a letter to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction calling for a 10 percent decrease in pay for Members of Congress.

"There's no doubt: Bobby Schilling is the more honest candidate, the candidate with more skin in the game, and he's the better choice for middle class families in western Illinois."

Bobby Schilling (R-Colona) was born and raised in Rock Island, Illinois. He has been married to his wife, Christie for 28 years and together they have 10 children. Schilling represented the Illinois 17th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011-2012, serving on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Agriculture Committee, and the House Small Business Committee. Schilling is seeking another term and is running against incumbent Congresswoman Cheri Bustos.

CHICAGO (08/24/2014)(readMedia)-- The 136th National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) General Conference and Exhibition at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago runs Aug. 22 to 25.

The annual event allows members to gather and vote on the top legislative priorities for NGAUS, share information and celebrate the camaraderie of being National Guard and NGAUS members.

Approximately 3,500 National Guard members and their guests use the gathering to plan and help shape the future of the National Guard. Delegates from 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia are setting the legislative agenda and electing new members to the NGAUS board of directors.

The conference also features nearly 1,100 exhibitors that market products and services to the Guard.

Illinois Air National Guard Airman of the Year recognized during National Guard Association Conference

By Master Sgt. Ken Stephens, 126th Air Refueling Wing

CHICAGO (08/24/2014)(readMedia)-- One of the top rated Airmen for the Illinois Air National Guard was recognized by the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force during the 136th National Guard Association of the United States General Conference in Chicago on Aug. 23.

Tech. Sgt. Steven Greenleaf, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, received a commander's challenge coin from Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, the Air Force's highest ranking officer, in a personal, one-on-one meeting at the conference.

While commenting on Greenleaf's civilian occupation and how it compliments his National Guard duties, Welsh said, "That's one of the strengths of the Guard. They come in with other skills, see problems we don't, and then they fix them."

Greenleaf, an engineering assistant craftsman with the 183rd Civil Engineer Squadron, part of the 183rd Fighter Wing in Springfield, Illinois, was chosen as the 2014 Outstanding Noncommissioned Officer of the Year by the Illinois Air National Guard. The selection was based on job performance, personal development and community service.

"It's great for individuals to be recognized for their work," said Greenleaf, "and it's also a reflection on the excellence of their team."

Greenleaf has volunteered for five deployments since enlisting in the National Guard in 2002. His most recent tour was to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan in 2013 where he was chosen as the Warrior of the Week for his engineering work supporting Air Force facility and maintenance programs.

He continues to be involved in the local community, volunteering his time with homeless shelters and the Humane Society. He also assists forensic and Geobase class students at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville where he graduated in 2013.

Senator Lindsey Graham speaks to Guardsmen at Chicago conference

By Spc. Ian Withrow, 139th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

CHICAGO (08/24/2014)(readMedia)-- Senator Lindsey Graham, the senior senator from South Carolina, spoke during the first business day of the 136th annual National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) conference in Chicago, Aug. 23, 2014.

Graham addressed an audience of National Guard members and association members, vendors and exhibitors at the conference. Graham's speech covered a variety of topics, from national defense to the tradition and honor the National Guard represents.

"The culture of the National Guard is irreplaceable," said Graham. "The Guard is indispensable to our national defense."

Maj. Jason Zeliph of New York, with Joint Forces Headquarters of the New York National Guard, said events like the NGAUS conference give members of Congress an opportunity to show their commitment to National Guard interests.

"I think it's important for members of Congress to speak at events like these," said Zeliph.

Maj. General Don Dunbar, of New Berlin, Wisconsin, the Adjutant General of the Wisconsin National Guard said it is important for elected officials to see and understand National Guard concerns.

"Events like NGAUS, give us a voice on Capitol Hill in the right way," said Dunbar. "It's not appropriate for Soldiers and Airmen to go protest, or lobby their interests, but organizations like NGAUS can express our interests in the correct setting," said Dunbar.

Approximately 3,500 National Guard members and their guests use the annual NGAUS gathering to plan and help shape the future of the National Guard. Delegates from 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia are setting the legislative agenda and electing new members to the NGAUS board of directors.

The conference concludes on Aug. 25.

Braley and Klobuchar visit local business in Waterloo to highlight importance of raising the minimum wage to $10.10 and restore its purchasing power

Waterloo, IA - Bruce Braley and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), vice chair of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee, today discussed the importance of raising the minimum wage and providing 300,000 Iowans with a pay raise during a visit to Popcorn Heaven in Waterloo.  Braley and Klobuchar have both been fighting to increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour to restore its purchasing power, fight income inequality, and strengthen Iowa and the nation's economy.

Today's stop comes after Braley for Iowa released a new report this week detailing the many benefits to Iowa working families of raising the federal minimum wage - a move that would overwhelmingly benefit adult workers, women, and families.

On the other hand, State Sen. Joni Ernst has repeatedly said that she does not support a federal minimum wage and that she thinks $7.25 an hour - which means roughly $15,000 a year for a full-time worker - is an appropriate minimum wage for hardworking Iowans.  Earlier this week, Ernst reinforced her opposition to the minimum wage and showed just how out of touch she is when she said $7.25 is a "great starter wage for many high school students, those that are just getting into work experience."

Braley said, "No one in Iowa should work a full-time job and live near or below the poverty line.  It's been over five years since the last federal minimum wage increase, and the minimum wage buys less and less for Iowa's workers, many of whom are supporting families. Small businesses like Popcorn Heaven know raising the minimum wage is good for working Iowans, good for business, and good for the economy - and yet my opponent thinks $15,000 a year is an appropriate wage for Iowa. I am committed to raising the minimum wage, boosting Iowa's economy, and providing 300,000 Iowans with a raise."

A report from Progress Iowa earlier this year found that increasing the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would provide 300,000 Iowans with a pay increase and infuse more than $270 million into Iowa's economy.

Since reaching its peak in 1968 at $10.69 an hour (in 2013 dollars), the minimum wage's purchasing power has steadily declined and left working Iowans struggling to support their families.

Braley and Klobuchar are sponsors of the Fair Minimum Wage Act that would increase the federal minimum wage to $10.10/hr and then tie future increases to inflation. According to a Des Moines Register poll, 65% of Iowans believe the minimum wage should be increased.

Governor Quinn Vetoes Uber Bill

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today vetoed House Bill 4075, also known as the "Uber bill." The bill would have imposed statewide regulations on commercial ridesharing and prevented local governments across Illinois from adopting rules that fit their respective communities. Today's action is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to protect consumers, create jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward.

"The principle of home rule is an important one," Governor Quinn said. "I am vetoing this legislation because it would have mandated a one-size-fits-all approach to a service that is best regulated at the local level."

While transportation services are traditionally regulated at the local government level, House Bill 4075 would have limited the ability of home rule units of government to adopt alternative approaches that best fit local needs.

For example, the city of Chicago passed an ordinance that will go into effect Aug. 26, 2014 which establishes a comprehensive set of regulations to ensure ridesharing companies maintain public safety including regulations on licensure, insurance, background checks, vehicle inspections and operating hours for drivers. The ordinance - which is in the process of being implemented - will help ensure these transportation services maintain public safety while keeping the regulation at the appropriate and traditional level of government.

Commercial ridesharing services are provided by drivers who use their personal automobiles to provide transportation services to the public. Customers use an application on their smart phones to order rides offered through these companies such as Uber X, Lyft, Sidecar and others.

Governor Quinn today also vetoed House Bill 5331, which contained related ridesharing regulations. Copies of both veto messages are attached.

Governor Quinn Signs Landmark Legislation to Reform Illinois' Mass Transit Agencies

Law Establishes Review Procedures for Unprecedented Transparency and Accountability Across CTA, RTA, PACE and METRA

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today signed a mass transit reform law that establishes unprecedented new transparency and review procedures for CTA, RTA, PACE and METRA. Today's action is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to making Illinois government more accountable, transparent and effective.

"Many Illinois workers and families rely on public transportation to get them to and from work every day," Governor Quinn said. "The law I signed today helps keep our public transit agencies efficient and reliable - and ensures that Illinois residents throughout the state have access to dependable public transportation."

Senate Bill 3056, sponsored by State Senator Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) and State Representative Al Riley (D-Hazel Crest), requires advance transit board and House and Senate committee review for any proposed mass transit employee contract exceeding $100,000. It also requires advance board review of any proposed employee bonus exceeding 10 percent, or any large employee separation or settlement.

The law establishes revolving door prohibitions for ex-employees, and creates an online portal where the public can access the names of employees and details about contracts, expenditures and accident and safety information. The law will help ensure that Illinois' several mass transit agencies uphold the public's trust and interests at all times. The new law is effective Jan. 1, 2015.

"Mass transit in the Chicago area has struggled with governance, regional planning and transparency for many decades," Senator Biss said. "This world-class region deserves a world-class transportation network, not a scandal-plagued patchwork of agencies, and we can only get there by breaking down barriers that hamper coordination and allow unethical behavior to continue."

"This is the first bill of many which will transform the way mass transit is managed in Northern Illinois," Representative Riley said. "It is critical that the public can trust the day-to-day operations of our publicly funded transit agencies, and know they are ethical and transparent."

Mona Moeller Named 2014 Hy-Vee Legendary Customer Service Award Recipient

BETTENDORF, Iowa (Aug. 22, 2014) – If you visit the Bettendorf Hy-Vee and the express lane has a long line, chances are Mona Moeller is working.

"The best compliment a checker can have is a long line. Mona always has a long line because she makes customers' days and no other checker will do," said Steve Mokosak, Bettendorf Hy-Vee store director. "She laughs with our customers, she cries with them, she jokes with them, and in the end, she keeps them coming back."

Moeller is the definition of a helpful smile, showing up to work each day with a positive attitude, ready to greet each customer as enthusiastically as she did the last and making sure nobody leaves the store unhappy. Co-worker Amanda Pickett said she enjoys checking next to Moeller and witnessing the way she interacts with customers.

"I don't think Mona has ever met a stranger. She has formed relationships with customers and they care about her as much as she cares for them," she said.

Moeller's ability to build relationships is one of the reasons her co-workers and customers nominated her for Hy-Vee's highest honor, the Legendary Customer Service Award.

This afternoon company officials, fellow employees, family members and customers gathered at the Hy-Vee in Bettendorf to surprise Moeller with the award, which recognizes exemplary achievement in providing service that exceeds customers' expectations. Only 10 winners of the award are selected each year from among more than 70,000 Hy-Vee employees in eight states.

Candidates are nominated for the Legendary Customer Service Award by their co-workers, and winners are selected by a panel of Hy-Vee's top officers. Nominations are evaluated on the employee's overall contributions to the company in nine areas: passion for customer service, attitude, initiative, teamwork, problem-solving skills, dedication to Hy-Vee fundamentals, communication skills, professional image and self-confidence.

Tim Cernin, assistant vice president of operations for Hy-Vee's eastern district, said Bettendorf Hy-Vee has found something special in Moeller.

"Mona is someone you look forward to seeing in the morning just to brighten your day with her quick wit," Cernin said. "Mona sets the example in service. And when other checkers are motivated to live up to what Mona's standards are, the store continues to set itself apart – all because of Mona."

Moeller is constantly making new friends and learning about her customers. Al Ulrich, one of Moeller's regular customers, said he looks forward to checking out when Moeller is working because he can count on her having a quick, interesting story or an insightful comment.

"I can honestly tell you that I don't know the names of any cashiers at the dozens of other stores I have shopped at over the years. But I can tell you that I know Mona and I look forward to seeing her in the express lane," said Ulrich. "Some days can be extremely busy for her, but she handles the stress with professionalism and a funny quip. She has even made me laugh on days when I was a little more stressed than usual."

Hy-Vee CEO Randy Edeker said Moeller is exactly the type of employee company officials had in mind when the Legendary Customer Service Award was established in 2006.

"Through the years, our employees have made the name Hy-Vee synonymous with friendliness, caring and outstanding customer service," he said. "This award honors the best of the best, like Mona, who remind all of us what it really means to serve the customer."

Moeller and the other 2014 recipients of the Legendary Customer Service Award will be inducted into Hy-Vee's Customer Service Hall of Fame and receive a coveted Legendary Customer Service name badge and a custom-designed ring to commemorate the honor. They will be guests of honor at their area's service award dinner in October, which honors employees for longevity of service in five-year increments, from five years to 45 years and beyond. And finally, their photos will be prominently featured on the side of Hy-Vee trucks, taking their helpful smiles to millions of travelers throughout the Midwest.

More Cadets to Protect and Serve Communities Across Illinois

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Pat Quinn today announced a new Illinois State Police (ISP) cadet class is set to begin in September 2014. Class 125 marks the second cadet class for 2014, and officials anticipate that graduates will report for duty in February 2015. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to ensure the safety of all people in every community across Illinois.

"The last few days have powerfully illustrated the strength, dedication and skill of our State Police force," Governor Quinn said. "From defusing a hostage crisis in Harvey, rescuing a motorist from floodwaters in southern Illinois, to helping the Chicago Police Department keep city streets safe, our dedicated troopers are always on call to serve our residents. This new cadet class will be an asset to officers already on patrol and to all of us who count on them."

"With the recent deployment of officers assisting in Chicago and other communities like Harvey, where State Police provided support during a high-risk hostage situation, more resources will provide much needed support to the men and women of this department who are indispensable in protecting Illinois," State Police Director Hiram Grau said.

The cadets will endure a rigorous 26-week regimen of physical and classroom instruction which includes training in Terrorism Awareness, Domestic Violence, Critical Incident Response, Firearms Training, First Responder Certification, Illinois Vehicle Code, Criminal Law, Motor Carrier Safety, Juvenile Law and more.

The ISP Academy is one of the most respected and recognized training facilities in the country. Dozens of law enforcement agencies also use ISP Academy curriculum to meet standards set forth by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Anyone interested in joining the ranks of the Illinois State Police is encouraged to visit the State Police Merit Board website at www.illinoistrooper.com for future application availability and testing dates.
