Marks sixth Hall of Fame for the long-time Astros broadcasting icon

HOUSTON, TX - The Des Moines Sunday Register announced today that Houston Astros radio broadcasting great Milo Hamilton has been inducted into their Iowa Sports Hall of Fame.

Hamilton, who grew up in Fairfield, Iowa, is the 215th inductee into this Hall of Fame as he joins the likes of Major League Baseball great Bob Feller, Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, former NFL greats Alex Karras, Emlen Tunnell, Roger Craig and Kurt Warner and legendary University of Iowa football coach Hayden Fry.

This marks the sixth Hall of Fame for Hamilton, whose 59 seasons as a Major League broadcaster are second all-time to Vin Scully's record of 65 seasons in the booth. Hamilton served as the radio voice of the Houston Astros from 1985-2012, and in that span, called some of the greatest moments in franchise history. For the past two seasons (2013-14), he has joined the Astros radio broadcasts during home Sunday games for his "Milo's Memories" feature. Hamilton will be on the air in the sixth inning of this afternoon's Astros-Rangers game.

"Congratulations to Milo on another well-deserved honor," said Astros President of Business Operations Reid Ryan. "He truly is a broadcasting  icon that has been a part of Astros baseball for decades. This is  another fitting honor for one of baseball's broadcasting greats."

Globally, Hamilton is best-known for his radio call of Hank Aaron's historic 715th home run on April 8, 1974, while serving as the Atlanta Braves play-by-play announcer. Hamilton and Aaron have a special bond that remains today. When the Astros honored Hamilton's career with a special night in 2012, Aaron made the trip to Houston to speak at the event.

Other highlights from Hamilton's illustrious career include calling 11 no-hitters, Nolan Ryan's 4,000th career strikeout and Craig Biggio's 3,000th hit. In addition to the Astros and Braves, Hamilton also had stints with the Pirates, including their 1979 World Championship season, and with the White Sox, Cubs and Cardinals.

In 1992, Hamilton received the industry's highest honor, receiving the Ford C. Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2009, in honor of his 25th season in Houston, a street outside Minute Maid Park was renamed Milo Hamilton Way. Later that year, Hamilton was named "King of Baseball" by Minor League Baseball at the Annual MLB Winter Meetings.

BANDITS QUIET SNAPPERS AGAIN TO EARN SPLIT

Bobby Boyd has two hits in Quad Cities debut, while A.J. Reed hits first career triple among two hits

DAVENPORT, Iowa. (August 10, 2014) - Quad Cities right-hander Michael Feliz limited the Beloit Snappers to a run on three hits in the first five innings, and left-hander Chris Lee and Chris Cotton combined for four scoreless relief innings to conclude a second straight 6-1 River Bandits win in front of 3,996 at Modern Woodmen Park Sunday night.

Feliz (8-4) was perfect with four strikeouts through the first three innings, while his teammates built an early 6-0 lead for the second straight game off Snappers right-hander Joey Wagman (1-1). In the first inning, River Bandits center fielder James Ramsay hit a one-out single, and scored when designated hitter Chase McDonald's single went past left fielder Snappers left fielder Justin Higley. First baseman A.J. Reed singled to put runners at first and third bases with one out, but Wagman retired the next two batters.

In the second inning, Wagman walked second baseman Jose Fernandez. A groundout by shortstop Thomas Lindauer moved Fernandez to second base, and left fielder Bobby Boyd singled to left field in his first Midwest League at-bat to move Fernandez to third base. Right fielder Ryan Bottger's sacrifice fly to center field scored Fernandez to give Quad Cities (25-24 second half, 60-58 overall) a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Wagman allowed a one-out walk to McDonald, and Reed laced a ground ball down the first-base line that scored McDonald and put Reed at third base for his first career triple. Third baseman J.D. Davis doubled to left field to scored Reed, and with two outs, Fernandez singled Davis home to end Wagman's outing after 2 2/3 innings. Lindauer walked against right-hander Hunter Adkins, and Boyd singled to right field to score pinch runner Dayne Parker for a 6-0 lead. Boyd finished 2-for-3 in his River Bandits debut.

Quad Cities managed two hits and a walk from the fourth through eighth innings. Adkins scattered three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings, before right-hander Tyler Vail walked a batter in a scoreless eighth inning. In the four-game series that the teams split, Beloit starters allowed all 15 River Bandits runs in 20 1/3 innings for a 6.64 ERA, while Beloit's bullpen worked 13 2/3 scoreless innings.

Trailing 6-0, Beloit (17-31, 47-71) got its first baserunner when shortstop Melvin Mercedes led off the fourth inning with a home run to right field against Feliz, who yielded his first home run since June 5 and first earned run in 17 innings against Beloit. All five Midwest League home runs against Feliz have been hit by left-handed batters leading off an inning. Feliz allowed two more hits but no more runs, as he became the season-high eighth straight River Bandits starter to pitch at least five innings. He allowed three hits without a walk and struck out five batters. In 19 innings over four starts against Beloit, Feliz is 2-0 and has allowed two runs - one earned - for a 0.47 ERA. The Snappers have eight hits, two three walks and 22 strikeouts while hitting for a .125 average against Feliz this season.

After Feliz, left-hander Chris Lee struck out four batters in three perfect innings in his first relief outing since July 17. Left-hander Chris Cotton pitched the ninth inning, allowing a one-out single by center fielder B.J. Boyd but also striking out two batters to finish a 6-1 win and a split of the four-game series with Beloit. With a 6-1 win Saturday, the River Banidts have won back-to-back games by the same score on two occasions in the last 16 days. They also won consecutive 9-2 finals July 26-27 at Bowling Green.

After its final scheduled off day of the regular season Monday, Quad Cities opens a three-game series at Kane County at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Geneva, Ill. River Bandits right-hander Kevin Comer (1-3) is scheduled to face Cougars right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1).

UP NEXT: A Fireworks Friday kicks off the next homestand, with a 7 p.m. game on City of Davenport Night and Global Cultural Night presented by Tyson Fresh Meats. When gates open at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, the first 1,500 fans receive a Trevor Rosenthal Bobblehead courtesy of DHCU and FOX18. BANDITS STRIKE BACK IN SIMS' SHUTOUT START

James Ramsay swats grand slam for first home run of the season, Chase McDonald hits 14th in 6-1 win

DAVENPORT, Iowa. (August 9, 2014) - Quad Cities left-hander Blaine Sims pitched six shutout innings for the first time in three years, left fielder Chase McDonald hit his team-high 14th home run, and center fielder James Ramsay hit a grand slam for his first home run in nearly a year, helping the River Bandits to a 6-1 win over the Beloit Snappers in front of 6,971 at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday night.

After losing the first two games of a four-game home series, Quad Cities (24-24 second half, 59-58 overall) defeated Beloit (17-30, 47-70) for the 11th time in 15 meetings this season. The River Bandits had averaged three runs per game while starting August 2-6, but they posted their highest single-game run total of the month by the end of the second inning Saturday.

After Sims (3-4) worked around a pair of one-out singles in the first inning, Ramsay hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning off Snappers right-hander Junior Mendez (2-7). McDonald then smacked a two-run home run to the Modern Woodmen Berm down the left-field line for a 2-0 lead - the River Bandits' first of the series. McDonald drove in his team's first five runs in the series against Beloit, and with a team-best 11 home runs in the second half, he is the first River Bandit with 14 home runs since 2012.

In the bottom of the second inning, second baseman Jose Fernandez drew a one-out walk, Mendez hit catcher Brett Booth with a pitch, and shortstop Thomas Lindauer lined a single to left field to load the bases. With two outs, Ramsay hit an 0-1 Mendez offering that cleared the ribbon board in right field for Ramsay's first career grand slam and first home run since he homered for short-season Class-A Tri-City Aug. 25, 2013. It was the River Bandits' fifth grand slam of the season - each by a different player - and gave Ramsay a career-high four RBIs.

With a 6-0 lead, Sims limited the Snappers to lone singles in the third and fourth innings, and lone two-out doubles in the fifth and sixth innings. He did not allow a baserunner to reach third base and pitched six shutout innings for the first time since June 13, 2011, when he did so for Atlanta Braves Class-A Advanced affiliate Lynchburg in the Carolina League. As the River Bandits' seventh straight starter to pitch at least five innings, Sims scattered six hits and struck out a season-high six batters without a walk for the first time this season.

Mendez allowed only two hits after the second inning but left after 4 2/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits, one walk and three hit batters with three strikeouts. After Mendez, the Snappers bullpen pitched scoreless baseball for the third straight game. Right-hander Trevor Bayless struck out two batters while allowing one hit in 2 1/3 shutout innings, and right-hander Joel Seddon struck out all three batters in a perfect eighth inning. Beloit relievers have allowed three hits and no runs in 8 1/3 innings the last three games.

Ramsay singled in the fourth inning for his first three-hit game since the All-Star Break, and McDonald added a single in the seventh inning for his second hit. Third baseman J.D. Davis in the third inning to extend a three-game hitting streak.

After Sims, right-hander Andrew Walter struck out all three batters in a perfect seventh inning. Right-hander Keegan Yuhl walked two batters and allowed a hit for Beloit's only run in the eighth inning. Right-hander Frederick Tiburcio pitched a perfect ninth inning.

Quad Cities seeks a split of the four-game series with Beloit at 5 p.m. Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park. River Bandits right-hander Michael Feliz (7-4) is scheduled to face Snappers right-hander Joey Wagman (1-0) in the seven-game homestand finale.

Governor Quinn Expands Green Transportation Program on Illinois' Highways

'Bus on Shoulders' Program Made Permanent and Will Now Transport Even More People Over More Illinois Highways

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation to expand the innovative 'Bus on Shoulders' program and make Illinois' highways more environmentally-friendly, efficient and accessible. The legislation is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to drive Illinois' economy forward and protect the environment by modernizing Illinois' infrastructure.

"Bus on Shoulders has proven to be a creative approach and a green solution to cut down on commuting times, encourage the use of mass transit and improve access to jobs," Governor Quinn said. "By making minimal investments in our existing infrastructure, we are providing big dividends for commuters and families throughout the region."

House Bill 5664, sponsored by State Representative Robert Rita (D-Blue Island) and State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago), makes permanent the successful 'Bus on Shoulders' pilot program and paves the way for the popular Pace service to expand to other parts of the Chicago expressway system as well as the Illinois Tollway.

Since Governor Quinn launched the program as an experimental service in 2011, ridership has jumped by 226 percent and on-time performance has dramatically improved on the Pace routes that utilize the Stevenson Expressway (Interstate 55) shoulders during heavy congestion.

As part of Governor Quinn's Illinois Jobs Now! capital program, $9.5 million was allocated in 2011 to upgrade and prepare the I-55 shoulders to enable Pace routes 755 and 855, which connect the southwest suburbs, downtown Chicago and the Illinois Medical District, to use the inside inbound shoulder for the morning rush hour and inside outbound shoulder for the afternoon return trip. Also for the first time in the Chicago area, the Pace buses on these routes offered free Wi-Fi service. Since Governor Quinn launched Bus on Shoulders, average daily ridership on both Pace routes has grown from 302 to 985, with on-time performance jumping from 68 percent to 93 percent.

"When we began this project in 2011, we set out to do three things: increase ridership, improve on-time performance and operate safely," Pace Chairman of the Board Richard Kwasneski said. "We've achieved all of these benchmarks and are grateful to Governor Quinn, the General Assembly, our project partners IDOT and RTA and our customers for their support throughout the planning and implementation process. Thanks to this legislation, we can take what we have learned on I-55 and bring express bus service to the shoulders of other highways and tollways in the region."

In addition to making Bus on Shoulders a long-term solution to meeting the region's highway and mass transit needs, the new law permits Pace to expand the program and include more routes. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is investing $362,631 to improve the shoulders from Kedzie Avenue to just west of the Dan Ryan Expressway (Interstate 90/94) so the existing service on I-55 can be extended approximately three miles east later this year. The department expects to complete a study by fall that will determine the scope of improvements needed to enable Pace to use the shoulders between Foster Avenue and Lake-Cook Road on the Edens Expressway (Interstate 94).

"This is an idea whose time has come," Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Erica Borggren said. "We at IDOT have enjoyed a productive partnership with Pace during the start of Bus on Shoulders. We look forward to working together far into the future as we continue exploring new and innovative ways to build a world-class transportation system for the Chicago area."

The Illinois Tollway's $2.5 billion rebuild and widening of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (Interstate 90) will include wider shoulders to accommodate Pace buses from the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) to Barrington Road in 2016 and future service expansions to Rockford. As part of the 15-year, $12 billion Move Illinois Program, the project includes $240 million to integrate transit on I-90 in partnership with Pace. This investment marks the first time the in the Illinois Tollway's history that the agency has built one of its roads specifically to accommodate transit. The Tollway also is designing the new Elgin O'Hare Western Access project to accommodate Bus on Shoulders.

"We know we can't build our way out of congestion and that's why we designed the new Jane Addams Memorial Tollway to accommodate transit and provide direct access to Pace bus service," Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said. "By following Governor Quinn's vision to integrate transit into our state's roadways, we are maximizing our existing assets to meet the demand for safe and efficient travel on our roads now and into the future."

Under the permanent program, buses will continue to use the shoulders as a passing lane only when traffic is moving slower than 35 mph. They are restricted to traveling no more than 15 mph over the top speed of vehicles in the expressway lanes and never greater than 35 mph. Pace cannot use the shoulders if they are already being used for snow removal, vehicle breakdowns and traffic stops by law enforcement. Safety always will be a top priority of the program. The shoulders will always be available to motorists in the event of an emergency.

Governor Quinn Announces Innovative Swedish-Based Manufacturer to Expand in Naperville; SKF Group Creating 80 Jobs, Investing $18.6 Million in Research Center

CHICAGO ? Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Swedish-based SKF Group has selected Illinois for its new North American research and development facility, which will create 40 full-time jobs within two years and another 40 within four years. The company chose a site in Naperville over locations in several other states. Today's announcement is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois' economy forward.

"SKF Group has a long history of providing quality technology products and services all over the world," Governor Quinn said. "Illinois is making a comeback and innovative companies like SKF are an important part of it. We are proud SKF has chosen to open this new facility and create jobs for Illinois' highly-skilled and educated workforce."

"One of SKF's driving forces is to continue to deliver world-leading research and innovation and to develop products which deliver significant energy savings for our customers," SKF President and CEO Tom Johnstone said. "This newest center supports our growth ambitions for the U.S. and the investments of over $2.5 billion that we have made during the past five years. The Naperville-based R&D center will strengthen our global network of technical centers that support each of our key regions. It provides a central location to some of our most significant U.S. customers, proximity to many local world class research universities and a highly-educated workforce that is critical to our knowledge engineering efforts."

The new 130,000-square-foot facility will be built for SKF at 1203 Warrenville Road?along the Interstate 88 business corridor?and will house engineers, scientists and administrative staff. The company selected Naperville in order to access the state's superior transportation network, highly-educated workforce, culture of entrepreneurship and competitive cost structure.

Factoring into the company's decision was a state incentive package worth an estimated $2.2 million over 10 years. The incentive is primarily a credit against the company's state income tax liability under the state's Economic Development for a Growing Economy, or EDGE program. The package also includes a $20,000 grant for job training. The EDGE program, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), requires companies to meet agreed-upon targets for job creation or retention and capital investment in order to receive the credits. The agreement with SKF USA requires the company to invest at least $18.6 million at its Naperville location over the next 10 years.

While the legal commitment to the state is for a minimum of 80 new jobs within four years, SKF said the facility eventually might have up to 200 employees.

"We are grateful for the trust SKF has placed in the state of Illinois," DCEO Director Adam Pollet said. "With our investments in our people and infrastructure, we want to make Illinois an easy choice for employers looking to expand their skilled labor force."

SKF USA Inc. is the United States subsidiary of the SKF Group of Gothenburg, Sweden and is based in Lansdale, PA. SKF Group is a leading global provider of bearings, seals, lubrication systems and industrial services and consulting covering every major business sector including transportation, paper, mining, oil and gas, food and beverages, machine tool, metals, and aerospace and energy.

Illinois is already home to two SKF manufacturing facilities, including one in Elgin since 1960, and the other in Waukegan since 2009. SKF employs about 390 people at the two locations.

Governor Quinn Signs "Sign and Drive" Law; Legislation Ends the Practice of Posting a Driver's License for Traffic Citations

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today signed a new law to end the practice of posting a valid driver's license as security for traffic citations in Illinois. Today's action on the "Sign and Drive" law continues the Governor's commitment to making Illinois government more accountable, transparent and effective.

"A driver's license is an important form of identification, and without it many residents may run into problems during everyday situations when a valid ID is required," Governor Quinn said. "This common sense legislation will allow law enforcement officials to continue doing their jobs while letting motorists hang onto a vital piece of identification. 'Sign and Drive' will help ensure motorists comply with the law and keep traffic moving on our streets."

Senate Bill 2583, sponsored by State Senator Michael Noland (D-Elgin) and State Representative John D'Amico (D-Chicago), eliminates the requirement that a valid driver's license must be posted as bail for certain traffic offenses. The new law allows a motorist's signature on the citation to be their guarantee that they will comply with the terms of the citation and either appear in court or pay the required fine. As before, the Secretary of State can suspend the driving privileges of any motorist who does not comply with the citation. The legislation is effective immediately.

"No longer will motorists be inconvenienced by having to give up their driver's license for nothing more than a moving violation," Senator Noland said. "With this bill, Illinois drivers will be able to keep their driver's license which is used as a primary form of identification for receiving services related to banking, travel, education and more. Now, with just their signature, drivers in Illinois can pay their fines online or by mail, appear if necessary, but keep their license as long as their fine is paid. This will save on time away from work, family matters and other more important activities of everyday life in Illinois. It will also make it less costly to process the ever increasing number of cases coming into our traffic courts. This bill is a win-win for our courts and our citizens. Safe travels to all."

"Senate Bill 2583 is a piece of commonsense legislation aimed at cutting down on the instances of identification misuse or misplacement," Representative D'Amico said. "This bill will get our safe drivers back on the road and keep our state moving forward."

Governor Quinn has supported and developed programs and signed legislation to make travel on Illinois roadways safer and more convenient. Last year he signed legislation to prohibit the use of all hand-held mobile phones while driving on Illinois roads and to increase the penalties where any use of an electronic device while driving is the cause of an accident. This summer, Governor Quinn signed legislation to prohibit municipalities from requiring police officers to meet ticket quotas and to prevent quotas from being used to evaluate an officer's performance.

Governor Quinn Signs Legislation to Support Illinois' Military Families; New Law Offers Gold Star License Plates to Children of Fallen Servicemembers

ROCKFORD - Governor Pat Quinn today signed legislation to allow the children of fallen servicemembers apply for Gold Star license plates. Today's action is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to support Illinois' military families.

"We owe a debt of gratitude to all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country," Governor Quinn said. "We are proud of all Illinois military families for their continued support while their loved ones have answered the call to duty. The Gold Star license plates serve as a small but constant reminder of all those who have given everything to protect our freedoms here at home."

House Bill 5475, sponsored by State Representative John M. Cabello (R-Machesney Park) and State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford), allows the sons and daughters of fallen servicemembers to apply for Gold Star license plates. Spouses, siblings or parents of persons who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces may already apply for these special plates. The law is effective Jan. 1, 2015.

The Gold Star is distributed to members of the immediate family of a fallen servicemember by the U.S. Department of Defense. The pin is distributed according to strict Department of Defense guidelines for servicemembers who have lost their lives in conflict or in support of certain military operations.

"Fallen military men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms that we enjoy today," Representative Cabello said. "Their families deserve our highest levels of support and respect. My hope is that these Gold Star license plates will provide an added way for these sons and daughters to be recognized for their sacrifice and the sacrifice and service of their loved one."

"A Gold Star shows that a loved one made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country," Senator Syverson said. "This will allow their children to keep the memory of their heroic actions alive for all to see."

Throughout his career, Governor Quinn has made commitment to veterans, servicemembers and their families a top priority. As lieutenant governor, he launched the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund that provides benefits for families of Illinois National Guard and Reserve servicemembers who are called to action during global conflict. Since its inception in 2003, the IMFRF has provided more than $15.4 million in support of 28,840 families of deployed servicemembers.

Governor Quinn recently signed a law to make it easier for the children of Illinois servicemembers to enroll in Illinois schools. He initiated the Illinois Veterans Grant and Illinois National Guard Grant, which cover tuition at all Illinois public universities and community colleges for eligible veterans and serving National Guard members. He also required colleges to post all benefits available to Illinois veterans and assign a staff member to serve as the point of contact for student-veterans who need information and assistance.

The Governor also launched the Illinois Warrior Assistance Program that helps veterans transition back to their daily lives and the Welcome Home Heroes program which helps support Illinois servicemembers seeking home ownership. In total, the state has targeted $20 million in Illinois Jobs Now! capital funds to the Welcome Home Heroes program to help increase affordable homeownership opportunities for military veterans and their families.

In 2012, Governor Quinn and the Departments of Veterans and Military Affairs spearheaded the statewide public-private partnership, Illinois Joining Forces, which has been a model for other states to follow. The program Families, Children, and Survivors Working Group has been effectively collaborating to make sure Illinois is addressing the needs of military families and children here in Illinois.

Students across Illinois are gearing up to head back to the classroom. To help families prepare, the Illinois Association of School Nurses (IASN) shares five simple items to their back-to-school checklist, ensuring a smooth transition into the 2014-2015 school year.

1.     Get required physicals. Outside of any regularly scheduled checkup, remember that in Illinois, physicals are required for students entering kindergarten, 6th and 9th grade, as well as for students participating in sports activities.

2.     Make sure your immunizations are up-to-date. Vaccinations are available to protect youth against 16 serious and potentially life threatening diseases, and many are required before students can begin classes. The state's vaccination requirements have changed slightly this year - the full list is available at http://www.idph.state.il.us/about/pgci.htm. Beginning next year, additional boosters to protect against meningitis will be required - it's never too early to start conversations with your doctor to learn more about these immunizations and ensure that all requirements are met.

3.     Go see the dentist. Although regular dentist visits are recommended, in Illinois, dental visits are required for students entering kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade.

4.     Schedule an eye exam, making sure needed prescription eyewear are obtained before the first day of school. A vision exam is required for kindergartners.

5.     For parents of children with chronic health problems - such as asthma, diabetes, allergies, seizures, etc. - make sure you update your school nurse on any changes to your child's health or medication.

IASN promotes wellness and educational success of school communities by supporting, developing and advocating for professional school nurse leaders. To learn more visit www.iasn.org.

Visits Ongoing I-74/280 Project and Outlines New Quad Cities Area Construction Projects Included in $1.1 Billion Capital Construction Bill

COAL VALLEY - Governor Pat Quinn today visited the site of a major road project and announced upcoming Quad Cities-area projects that are part of the state's new $1.1 billion capital construction bill. Today's event is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to create jobs and build a 21st-century infrastructure that will drive Illinois' economy forward.

"With major construction projects across our state we are continuing to put people to work maintaining and improving our world-class transportation system," Governor Quinn said. "This highway project and the many other ongoing projects in the Quad Cities area are creating jobs, enhancing safety and improving efficiency in a major economic corridor of our state."

"We are grateful for Governor Quinn's commitment to improving our state's infrastructure and recognizing the many benefits that come with funding transportation projects," Acting Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Secretary Erica Borggren said. "This infrastructure project, when complete, will significantly enhance safety and improve travel for motorists on a stretch of roadway that is very important to this region."

Governor Quinn visited the site of a $17.7 million bridge replacement and resurfacing project just east of the Interstate 74/280 interchange. The project includes resurfacing 12 miles of the interstate and replacement of the bridges over Coal Creek. Half of both the east and westbound bridge work is complete, and the resurfacing work is nearly 60 percent done with completion expected in November. McCarthy Improvement Company is the contractor for the work, which started in June 2013. The project is part of Governor Quinn's $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, which is supporting more than 439,000 jobs over six years. Illinois Jobs Now! is the largest construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest construction programs in the nation.

Other ongoing Quad City projects that are a part of Illinois Jobs Now! include the $16.2 million John Deere Road reconstruction and fly-over bridge, $6.2 million Route 92 widening and resurfacing, $3.8 million Route 6 bridge reconstruction and the $3.3 million U.S. 67 Centennial Bridge structure repairs.

Governor Quinn signed into law last month a new $1.1 billion capital construction program to supplement the work that has been done under Illinois Jobs Now! Quad City regional projects funded as part of this new construction bill include $31 million to resurface 30 miles of Interstate 80 in Henry County; $16.8 million to resurface Interstate 74/Illinois 110/Interstate 80 in Henry County; and $4 million to resurface 14.3 miles of Illinois 40 from Milledgeville to Sterling in Carroll and Whiteside Counties.

"The Quad Cities act as a large gateway to the western United States and see a lot of shipping traffic every year," State Senator Mike Jacobs (D-Moline) said. "This project will not only update and maintain our existing infrastructure for future travel, but also put many residents in the area to work."

"The Illinois Jobs Now! program created by Governor Quinn and funded through our efforts in the Illinois General Assembly has made critically needed improvements to our roads and highways in northwest Illinois," State Representative Patrick Verschoore (D-Milan) said. "Not only am I proud of the fact we are creating jobs through this effort, but we are making needed infrastructure improvements to help our businesses and industries in the region grow long term."

"For too long, the roads here in western Illinois have deteriorated," State Representative Mike Smiddy (D-Hillsdale) said. "These improvements to roads in Henry, Carroll and Whiteside Counties are a vital component to creating jobs and developing our local economy."

The $1.1 billion for more than 210 road and bridge projects statewide will create an estimated 14,300 construction jobs.

In addition to funding $1 billion in projects in the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) FY2015-2020 Multi-Year Program, the new capital construction program includes $100 million for municipal and township governments to improve infrastructure at the local level. The funding, distributed and overseen by IDOT, will help communities throughout Illinois combat potholes and make other critical infrastructure repairs.
