So, the stats are pretty unappetizing, but that doesn't mean you have to swear off burgers for good. When it comes to chowing down on this barbecue favorite, it's always better to go homemade, where you have complete control over the ingredients going in to your meal.

Follow these tips for a better-for-you burger:

•Go organic. To avoid additives and hormones, shop your local farmer's market for locally-sourced, organic meat products.

• Opt for lean turkey meat over beef. "Beef burgers add up fast in the fat department - especially saturated fat, which is important to keep track of for cardiovascular health and your waistline," says Keren Gilbert, MS, RD, founder and president of Decision Nutrition. "Lean turkey meat has half the saturated fat of beef; make sure the label says at least 93 percent lean."

• Increase moisture. "Lean turkey burgers tend to be dry since the fat content is low," says Gilbert. "To up the moisture of your burger, I suggest adding onions, shredded zucchini, shredded carrots, or spinach." These veggies also up the fiber content, helping you to feel more satiated, Gilbert adds.

• Add a healthy binding agent. Breadcrumbs are the most popular ingredient for binding ground meat, but Gilbert suggests swapping them for fiber-rich oats. Another option: Chia seeds, which are a great binder that also ups the nutritional profile of your burger. She recommends using 1/2 cup of either ingredient to 1 pound of turkey.

• Season smart. Up the flavor of your patty with calorie-free flavorings. Gilbert suggests hot sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, or paprika.

• Condiment swap. "Even a lean, healthy burger can take a turn for the worse when topped with bacon, cheese, or creamy sauces," says Gilbert. She suggests passing on the caloric add-ons in favor of salsa, mustard, or veggie toppings like peppers and onions.

Feliz struggles as Quad Cities can't complete sweep

CLINTON, Iowa (June 26, 2014) - Clinton starter Lars Huijer limited the River Bandits to two hits in six shutout innings and the LumberKings pounded out 14 hits Thursday in a 12-3 thrashing of Quad Cities at Ashford University Field.

The LumberKings led 3-0 in the fourth with one out when Michael Feliz walked Lonnie Kauppila. Zach Shank then beat out a bunt single down the third base line, and another infield hit, this one to first courtesty of Aaron Barbosa, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the game and 9-for-13 in the series, loaded the bases. Feliz proceeded to walk Jack Reinheimer to bring in the fourth Clinton run of the game. The River Bandits then turned to Chris Cotton, whose first pitch to Chantz Mack was laced off the right field wall to score two more runs, both charged to Feliz (3-2). The right-hander surrendered a career-high six runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Clinton really broke the game open in the seventh inning of an 8-0 contest against Quad Cities reliever Andrew Walter. Isaiah Yates, who scored three runs in his Midwest League debut, walked and then moved to second on a wild pitch. On Martin Peguero's single to center, Yates scored to give Clinton a 9-0 advantage. Peguero wound up 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Walter plunked Kauppila with a pitch and then served up a three-run home run to Shank, who drove in four in a 3-for-4 day, to put the LumberKings up a dozen.

Huijer (4-5) recorded just one strikeout, but got Quad Cities to hit into 14 groundouts to earn the win. He walked five.

Anthony Bass worked a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts in his second rehab outing with Quad Cities.

Quad Cities broke up the shutout when James Ramsay scored on Clinton reliever Dylan De Meyer's wild pitch in the eighth. Tyler White, who was 2-for-3, had an RBI single in the inning and Ronnie Mitchell lifted a sacrifice fly to put three Bandits runs across in the frame.

The LumberKings extended their 1-0 first inning lead in their very next at-bat. After a one-out Yates double, Peguero struck out but then Kauppila singled home Yates. Shank's single moved Kauppila to second before Barbosa's base hit scored the Clinton second baseman to make it 3-0.

The River Bandits will begin a five-game, four-day series at Peoria tomorrow with Edison Frias (4-3, 6.09 ERA) on the mound against the Chiefs' Chase Brookshire (2-3, 5.06).

UP NEXT: Back-to-back fireworks nights kick of the Fourth of July weekend at Modern Woodmen Park. The ballpark will open Thursday, July 3, for the annual Red, White and Boom Fireworks, and the River Bandits will have Fourth of July Fireworks presented by Smart Toyota of the Quad Cities, WLLR and WQAD following the 7 p.m. game on Friday, July 4. What are "Cookbooks for Guys?"

"These are good-tasting recipes for men that are simple and quick to make because we're lazy and we're hungry," says author Tim Murphy.

With fourteen titles in the series and more coming, Tim Murphy has struck upon a concept that has become a cottage industry.

"People are so locked into a dog or meat patty on the grill and a glop of condiments. Both books go well beyond the tried and true. These aren't gourmet, but aside from dozens of recipes in each book I've researched over 150 condiments, stuffings, spices and sauces that take the humble hot dog and basic burger to the next level," says Murphy.

And it's not about just food. Murphy donates 25% of all book profits to The Wounded Warrior Project. He says it's just "the right thing to do, to give back to those that gave so much."

Murphy has also just released his first "non-cookbook" title called "Flannel John's Emergency Preparation and Bug Out Book." In case of a disaster, natural or man-made, you should have an emergency kit on hand. Author Tim Murphy has researched and compiled the 100+ items that can get you through a short-term crisis of a long-term disaster. Something as small as a 20-cent pencil sharpener or wine cork could be a life saver.

"A pencil sharpener in your "go bag" can be used to shave tinder from twigs and start a fire to keep you and your family warm," says Tim Murphy. "Wine corks can be used as a makeshift fishing bopper or as a security float for keys or glasses."

"There is NOT going to be a zombie apocalypse. It makes for compelling television and movies but the dead are not going to rise and crave human flesh. You are going to face emergencies. Depending on where you live, it could be a flood, tsunami, forest fire, tornado, hurricane, snowstorm, mud slide or power outage. In some cases, you may have to hunker down and ride it out. In other instances, you'll have just moments to gather the family and bug out. I wrote this book to keep people safe" says Murphy. All three books are $7.95.

Murphy is a veteran radio broadcaster and freelance writer. He is the Operations Manager for Ohana Media Group, a five-station cluster in Astoria, Oregon and is also the morning announcer for 102.3 KCRX. He lives in Astoria, OR with his wife LisaMarie Costanzo.

All fifteen of his books can be found at Amazon.com and at www.flanneljohn.com. For additional information, pictures or for an interview, contact Tim Murphy at (701) 238-1775 (cell) or at shamrockarrow@gmail.com.

Greenwood, president of the Iowa chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and CEO of Des Moines-based Mygooi.com.

The results of two 24-week studies held at 200 sites in North America, Europe and Australia, were announced Tuesday (http://investors.vrtx.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=856185) by Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc., which developed the drugs and protocol with the support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

This is a terrible disease and, while there's still a lot of work to be done, this is a massive step forward."

Vertex and CFF said the studies ple with two copies of the F508del mutation.

These results represent an important milestone for the CF Community. The knowledge gained from these studies provides an important building block in our efforts to target the root case of the disease in ALL People with CF!showed significant improvements for people with two copies of the F508del mutation, about half of all CF cases. Vertex is looking for possible FDA approval of the treatment in 2015. Robert J. Third annual series of veterans town halls to coincide with July 4th holiday

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced that he will bring his Serving Those Who Served tour to Davenport and Clinton on THURSDAY, July 3. These forums will give veterans and their families an opportunity to speak directly with Congressman Loebsack. Staff will also be on hand for veterans to seek assistance if they are having issues with the Veterans Administration, or any Federal agency. Loebsack will be joined by representatives from local Veteran Service Organizations, County Veterans Affairs Officers and other groups.

"As Iowans come together to celebrate the birth of our nation, we must take time to remember those men and women who fought for the freedoms we treasure. As a military parent and member of the House Armed Services Committee, I take great pride in Serving Those Who Served. I strongly believe that there is no greater responsibility we have as a nation than to ensure our servicemembers have the support, equipment, and training they need to safely carry out their mission and that we care for our veterans with the same dignity and honor with which they served. I look forward to meeting with veterans and their families to discuss issues important to them and provide any assistance my office can help with."

Loebsack will also hold forums in Muscatine, Iowa City, Ottumwa, Ft. Madison, Burlington, Newton, Knoxville and Washington. This is the third year that Loebsack has hosted town halls specifically for veterans around the July 4th holiday. Veterans, their families and media are invited to attend.
