Clinics provide free legal advice to domestic violence survivors

CHICAGO - Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and representatives of Verizon Wireless to announce a major grant that will support the state's Virtual Legal Clinic, spearheaded by Simon.

The grant to the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) will grow the clinic, an online legal service piloted in 2011 by Simon's office and the ICADV to assist women and children in rural and underserved areas that lack family law attorneys.

Simon chairs the Governor's Rural Affairs Council and is working to improve access to services in rural communities. Prior to being Lt. Governor, she prosecuted domestic violence crimes as a Jackson County assistant state's attorney and helped found a domestic violence legal clinic at Southern Illinois University's school of law.

DENVER, May 28, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ -- The following is submitted by Leslie Hanks President, and Jefferson George, Vice President, of American Right to Life:

In an era when far too many Republican candidates are betraying our posterity for power, it is most encouraging to see candidates returning to the tried and true principle of equal protection under law for every human being, which made America great.

Tom Hoefling, author of the Equal Protection for Posterity resolution, is candidate for Iowa Governor and believes in the God-given, inalienable right to life of his pre-born neighbors and equal protection for Iowa's posterity.

While there are a growing number of candidates who've decided enough is enough and are willing to fight the Crimes Against Humanity which have become an industry in America these past 40 years, Tom Hoefling has led the way in educating America about our founding documents and our citizens' God-given rights. Tom is owed a debt of gratitude by our nation for shining the light of truth in the darkness and educating about the infinite value of every human life in God's sight.

American Right to Life commends Tom Hoefling for being a true statesman, fighting to protect the lives & liberty of every citizen in Iowa, without exception, and for his determined efforts to re-establish the principles America was founded upon in our Declaration of Independence.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today announced that he is calling on Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki to immediately resign. He is also calling on Attorney General Eric Holder to begin an investigation to determine if any criminal wrongdoing occurred. Results of a preliminary report by the VA Inspector General's Office show that the delay of care to veterans and subsequent manipulation of records is systemic throughout the VA. The report also states that the delay caused the health care of veterans to be compromised.

"The VA Inspector General's report makes it very clear that there are scheduling problems agency-wide and not just isolated to the Phoenix health center. I have made it very clear that if these allegations were proven true that heads need to roll. I appreciate Secretary Shinseki's prior service to our nation, but it is time for a new direction at the VA and Secretary Shinseki needs to leave for that to happen.

"As a military parent, I have been outraged by what has come to light and believe the Department of Justice needs to investigate to determine if any criminal actions took place. We owe it to our nation's veterans to determine exactly what happened."

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today released the following statement after the VA Office of Inspector General issued an interim report on alleged misconduct related to patient wait times and scheduling practices at the Veterans Health Administration.

"The preliminary report of the VA's Office of Inspector General has convinced me that it is time for Secretary Shinseki to resign. The safety and health of our veterans is the paramount responsibility of the VA?and the report's damning findings include "systemic" problems with delayed medical care to veterans  and manipulation of records to hide those delays. It is now clear that the only way to restore confidence in the VA's ability to identify and eliminate these problems throughout the entire system is with new leadership.

"I also join House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Jeff Miller in calling on the Justice Department to conduct an investigation into alleged misconduct to determine if any criminal charges should be filed against those involved."

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement regarding Illinois Senate passage of House Bill 3814, legislation that would place a question on the Nov. 4, 2014 ballot asking voters if the state's minimum wage should be raised to $10 per hour by Jan. 1, 2015. The bill previously passed the Illinois House, and now heads to the Governor's desk:

"This November, Illinois voters will have the opportunity to send a clear signal to lawmakers that we must have an economy that works for everyone.

"Raising the minimum wage will benefit hundreds of thousands of hardworking men and women across our state. Higher wages for employees means they will spend more at local businesses, which in turns boosts economic growth.

"As we work to build a majority to raise the minimum wage in Illinois, this referendum will help us get the job done.

"I thank Senator Kimberly Lightford and House Speaker Michael Madigan for sponsoring this important legislation. I look forward to signing it and letting the people's voice be heard on this important issue."
