Davenport Public Library Summer Reading Program Kick-Off

The Muddy Waters Celebrates Its Four-Year Anniversary

The Muddy Water's, 1708 State Street, Bettendorf, Iowa, is marking four-years in business with a fun-filled anniversary celebration on May 31, starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Muddy Waters "backyard" will be the home to an impressive live music line-up starting with the Winter Blues All-Stars at 4:30 p.m. The Winter Blues All-Stars is comprised of talented young musicians selected from the River Music Experience's Winter Blues program. The annual Winter Blues program features vocal and instrumental workshops, as well as a concentration on blues composition and improvisation. The 2014 Winter Blues All- stars include Jesse Barger (guitar), Noah Schneider (guitar), MacKenzie Noppe (drums, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, vocals), Matt Fuller (guitar), Michael Osborne (bass guitar, harmonica), Sarah Elisabeth Hanson (vocals).

The Curtis Hawkins Band will rob the stage at 6:00 p.m. Playing a variety of soul, funk, and blues, The Curtis Hawkins Band has shown that they are capable of doing what it takes to make it in the music scene. Based out of the Quad Cities and Galesburg, Illinois, members include Andrea Mendoza (bass), Ian Johnson (guitar, vocals), Jamie Hopkins (drums, vocals), and m3 (keyboards, vocals). You can find them playing original music from their "Keep Workin' The Blues" CD (available on iTunes) then turn around and bust out everything from rock-n-roll to funk-n-soul! A high-energy, 7-piece, power horn band is what's happening on the stage at 8:00 p.m. with Tangent!. Tangent! is from right here in the Quad Cities and they will be mixing all of the best sounds and songs of Motown, Blues, Soul, Rock, and Jazz. While reasonably true to the original songs, Tangent! also lends their own style and solos into the mix, just at the right time. The music that they play will lift you off of your lawn chair, and right onto the dance space. Gov. Branstad to sign biofuels promotion bill Wednesday at POET Biorefining in Coon Rapids

(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry E. Branstad today announced he will sign Senate File 2344 into law Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at 12:30 p.m. at POET Biorefining in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

The bill promotes the development of bio-butanol and bio-butanol blended gasoline, which are next generation biofuels; and modifies the rate of the E-15 promotion tax credit and extends provisions for the biodiesel production refund.

Give blood in honor of World Blood Donor Day

PEORIA, Ill. (May 15, 2014) –The American Red Cross encourages all eligible donors to choose their day to help save lives by giving blood in honor of World Blood Donor Day.

Every year, on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The occasion raises awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and thanks voluntary blood donors for their lifesaving gifts of blood.

"World Blood Donor Day comes at a very important time each year," said Shelly Heiden, community CEO, Heart of America Blood Services Region. "Summer can be a challenging time for blood donations, with fewer donors available to donate blood due to busy summer schedules. BANDITS SMACK FIRST-PLACE COUGARS IN SHUTOUT

Lindauer hits team's first grand slam of the season, as three pitchers combine to dominate Kane County

GENEVA, Ill. (May 15, 2014) - Shortstop Thomas Lindauer had a third-inning grand slam in a 3-for-4, five-RBI game, and right-handers Adrian Houser and Kevin Comer and left-hander Albert Minnis combined on a five-hit shutout in the Quad Cities River Bandits' 7-0 series-opening win over the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Thursday night.

The River Bandits (19-20) took the first of four games against first-place Kane County (26-14) by tossing their second shutout of the season. The offense was led by three hits each from first baseman Conrad Gregor and Lindauer, who hit the team's first grand slam of 2014 and has posted both of the five-RBI games by a River Bandit this season.

Quad Cities began scoring in the second inning against right-hander Duane Underwood (0-1). Designated hitter Brett Booth led off with a double down the right-field line but remained at second base until Lindauer grounded a single into center field for a 1-0 lead.

In third inning, the visitors broke the game open. Third baseman Tyler White reached on a one-out fielding error by Cougars third baseman Ben Carhart, and Gregor singled on a ground ball into center field. Underwood threw a wild pitch to advance both runners and then hit catcher Brian Holberton with a two-out pitch. Left fielder Ronnie Mitchell drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0, and Lindauer followed with a drive to the picnic deck in left field, extending the lead to 6-0. All five runs in the inning were unearned against Underwood, who allowed six runs - one earned - on six hits and two walks with one strikeout in his three-inning start.

The River Bandits added a fourth-inning run against left-hander Gerardo Concepcion. Second baseman Chan-Jong Moon drew a leadoff walk, Gregor hit a one-out single, and Booth grounded an RBI single into right field for a 7-0 lead. The Cougars trapped Booth in a rundown, but when he reached first base safely, Cougars manager Mark Johnson argued and was ejected by base umpire Dave Attridge.

The seven runs were more than enough support for Houser (2-1), who worked around singles in the first and second innings, and got a ground-ball double play after the latter. He set down nine consecutive batters from the second inning until two outs in the fifth inning, when he gave up a two-out single and walk. He got a ground-ball fielder's choice to end his second straight shutout start. After six scoreless innings last Friday against Beloit, Houser pitched five shutout innings Thursday, scattering three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Comer began the sixth inning with a 7-0 lead. He allowed back-to-back two-out walks in the sixth inning and a two-out walk and single in the seventh but escaped both jams. He worked a perfect eighth inning to complete his third straight Midwest League appearance of three shutout innings. In the ninth inning, Minnis allowed a one-out single before getting designated hitter Jordan Hankins to ground into a game-ending, 5-4-3 double play.

Quad Cities continues the series against Kane County at 6:30 p.m. Friday. River Bandits left-hander Chris Lee (1-1) is scheduled to face Cougars right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0).

Governor Quinn Visits Innovative Manufacturer as Illinois Comeback Continues

State Unemployment Rate Reaches Lowest Level Since 2008

CICERO - As Illinois' unemployment rate fell to its lowest point in more than five years, Governor Pat Quinn today visited an innovative and growing local manufacturer, United Gasket Corporation, to discuss the state's ongoing economic recovery from the worst recession since the Great Depression. Illinois' unemployment rate has dropped to 7.9 percent - its lowest level in more than five years and lower than when the Governor took office. Today's event is part of the Governor's commitment to driving Illinois' economy forward.

"Illinois is making a comeback," Governor Quinn said. "Today's news that unemployment has fallen to its lowest level since 2008 is further proof that our economy is expanding and creating jobs. Companies like United Gasket Corporation are hiring, small companies are being created and larger companies are growing and adding more workers."

"While we know we have much more work to do to create more jobs and growth in Illinois, this is good news and we must continue driving our economy forward," the Governor said.

The Illinois unemployment rate hit a new five-year low in April when it fell to 7.9 percent, according to data released earlier today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. More people working pushed the rate down 0.5 points, the lowest rate since December 2008 and largest monthly decline in the history of this data series that began in 1976.

Since taking office and inheriting decades of mismanagement, the Governor has enacted worker's compensation reform and unemployment insurance reform to make Illinois a better place to do business, in addition to major fiscal reforms such as pension reform and Medicaid restructuring that are restoring fiscal stability to Illinois. Today Governor Quinn is pushing a new tax cut for businesses that provide job training. By lowering the cost to train workers, this will make it easier for businesses to create new jobs and ensure workers have the skills to drive a 21st century economy.

The Governor is also proposing to reduce the fee to establish a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) by more than 90 percent, from $500 to $39 - the lowest in the nation. Formation as an LLC encourages entrepreneurs to invest their time and money into viable business enterprises. Reducing the filing fee to $39 would make it easier for small businesses to start and grow in Illinois.

United Gasket Corporation is an innovative Illinois company that has reported double-digit percentage growth in revenue and profit for each of the last three years. The manufacturer of custom die cut parts for automobiles and other industries currently employs 90 people, but expects that number to increase by 10 to 15 percent in the next six months.

"We are thrilled with the support we have received from the state for job training and to improve our production," United Gasket President Mark Pahios said. "The resources here have helped us develop business in Mexico and China. We are working hard to send Illinois products into those markets."

United Gasket has received about $20,000 in state job-training grants over the last decade for services accessed through University of Illinois Business Innovation Services. The company has invested in lean manufacturing techniques to take out unneeded costs and push into new markets overseas.

Governor Quinn said the company's commitment points to a need for state government to adopt a responsible budget that supports Illinois' core strengths in the global economy - its education, workforce training and transportation systems.

Rachel Rauch among spring 2014 candidates for degree at the University of Kansas

LAWRENCE (05/15/2014)(readMedia)-- The names of nearly 4,450 candidates for degree from the University of Kansas this spring - representing 88 Kansas counties, 45 other states and and 41 other countries - have been announced by the University Registrar.

Those students include Rachel Rauch, of Leclaire. Rauch will receive a Bachelor of General Studies in Applied Behavioral Sciences and minor in Dance.

KU's 142nd Commencement will be Sunday, May 18. More than half of the members of the Class of 2014 are expected to participate.

Faculty and candidates for degrees will assemble at 10 a.m. along Memorial Drive for the procession, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
