Salvatore Marici, Port Byron, Illinois, first full-length collection of poetry is entitled, Swish Swirl & Sniff (Ice Cube Press). The collection is a reflection of not only his life here in the Quad Cities, but his varied and fascinating life abroad. In this full flavored, wise, and wildly alive collection Salvatore Marici travels through the Amazon, Guatemala, Sicily, doctor's offices, arenas, kitchens, and his Quad Cities home. From one poem to the next, there is a connected cord.

An enchanting array of rhythmic encounters, sensual visions, as well as perceptive reflections on life's mysteries. Many of the Quad Cities prominent poets and art promoters are strong supporters of this new book:

"Whether he is writing about the heart of the Inca Empire in Peru or Wrigley Field in Chicago, Sal brings his subjects alive with an earthy swirl of all five senses." ?Roald Tweet, WVIK Rock Island Lines

"Sal Marici is a gifted poet, who sees that the world can pull you down. There is death, and cruelty, and ignorance, yet what saves us is our ability to feel deeply and enjoy the richness of life." ?Bruce de Gouveia Carter, Host of Art Talks on WVIK

"These poems are rich, loamy, fragrant with life. Unafraid to be playful, unafraid to be understood, they embrace the world as if they want to eat it whole. Read this book if you want to feel a little more alive." ?Thomas Lux, author, Child Made of Sand

"There's an expansive world conveyed by Sal Marici's poems, examined up-close and with care, even when the mood is frisky. The physicality of the collection's vivid and momentary encounters urge us inward and out into new landscapes." ?Rebecca Wee, Quad Cities Poet Laureate (2003-2005), author, Uncertain Grace

Marici has lived in the Quad Cities since 1979. He is a retired Agronomist from the Rock Island Arsenal.
He was also a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala. He is an active member of the Midwest Writing
Center in Davenport, where, in 2002, he attended an Out Loud event and read his poetry for the first time.

His poetry readings often include muscial accompaniment. His upcoming events include : May 16th during

n 30 second spot, Braley discusses how his mom inspired him to never give up
DES MOINES, IA - Launching on broadcast and cable TV across Iowa in time for Mother's Day, the second television ad of Bruce Braley's 2014 campaign for US Senate highlights the impact Marcia Braley -- Bruce's mom -- has had on his life.

After his father died during his first year of law school at the University of Iowa, Braley considered leaving school. But his mom urged him to keep going and never give up.

Braley said, "My mom is an incredible inspiration to me, and she's had a big impact on my life. She grew up in the Great Depression and taught us to work hard, put family first, and spend money wisely. But most importantly, she taught me to never give up no matter how tough things were. I'm running for Senate because I'm determined to fight for working families like the one I grew up in."

Quad Cities uses four-run eighth inning to overcome 5-2 deficit and win 6-5 series opener over Beloit

DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 8, 2014) - Jobduan Morales and Brett Phillips hit consecutive RBI doubles with two outs in the eighth inning to complete the Quad Cities River Bandits' second straight comeback from a three-run deficit, and the team won its third straight game in a 6-5 victory over the Beloit Snappers in front of 1,087 at Modern Woodmen Park Thursday night.

After falling behind 3-0 and 5-2, the River Bandits (15-18) scored four runs in the eighth inning for a second straight game to match their longest winning streak of the season, which first occurred April 10-13.

In his return from the disabled list, River Bandits right-hander Michael Feliz worked around a first-inning single and second-inning walk to pitch two scoreless innings. Right-hander Patrick Christensen followed with a scoreless third inning, but right fielder Tyler Marincov led off the fourth with a double to center field, and designated hitter Jaycob Brugman drew a one-out walk. First baseman Ryan Huck hit an RBI single to left field, and second baseman Luis Baez followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to make it 3-0.

After Christensen allowed three earned runs on three hits and a walk in two innings, right-hander Gonzalo Sanudo started the fifth inning for Quad Cities. He allowed a single and walk to start his outing but got a ground ball to the mound and line-drive double play to escape.

Against Snappers right-hander Kyle Finnegan, Quad Cities was held to four hits and no runs through the first four innings. But Phillips led off the fifth with a triple down the right-field line and scored on second baseman Chan-Jong Moon's RBI groundout. Finnegan allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings, before right-hander Junior Mendez began the sixth with a 3-1 lead. First baseman Conrad Gregor doubled to left-center field on Mendez's first pitch, and scored on right fielder Ronnie Mitchell's single.

Beloit *13-20) added to its lead against Sanudo in the seventh. Pinch hitter Sam Roberts hit a leadoff single and moved to second base on a sacrifice. After a strikeout and two-out intentional walk to left fielder B.J. Boyd, Sanudo was removed after 2 2/3 innings. Right-hander Zach Morton (2-1) came in to allow Marincov's RBI single - his game-high third hit - before ending the inning with a 4-2 deficit. Morton allowed another run in the eighth inning, when Burgman hit a leadoff double and scored after Huck's single was bobbled by left fielder Tanner Mathis. Morton completed 1 1/3 innings, allowing an earned run on two hits with one strikeout.

With a 5-2 lead, Mendez began the eighth by allowing a single by shortstop Jack Mayfield, a walk to Gregor and an RBI single by third baseman Tyler White, who had his third straight multi-hit game and is 11-for-17 on the homestand. Mitchell put down a sacrifice against right-hander Stuart Pudenz (1-3), who allowed designated hitter Brian Holberton's sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Morales drove a 3-2 pitch down the left-field line to score White for the tying run, and Phillips greeted right-hander Tyler Hollstegge with a double to score Morales.

With a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning, Quad Cities used a fifth pitcher of the game for the first time since April 8. Right-hander Andrew Walter got a groundout by center fielder Boog Powell and a foul popup by Boyd before striking out Marincov for his third save.

Quad Cities will try for a season-high fourth straight win against Beloit left-hander Chris Lamb at 7 p.m. Friday.

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today issued the following statement regarding Illinois House passage of a bill to expand the Illinois Clean Water Initiative to include stormwater and green infrastructure projects, a key part of the Governor's agenda. Governor Quinn called for this measure in his 2014 State of the State address as part of his agenda to create more jobs and build an economy that works for everyone. Senate Bill 2780 has previously passed the Illinois Senate and now heads to the Governor's desk.

"I want to commend Senator Dan Kotowski and Representative Elaine Nekritz, and all the legislators who voted for this important measure, which will help communities throughout Illinois be better prepared for the next heavy rain.

"Last spring's record rainfall and flooding hit many communities hard. We can help communities be better prepared to handle stormwater by including these types of projects in my Clean Water Initiative.

"Stormwater is also a significant contributor to surface water pollution. This legislation will allow local governments to secure low-interest loans for projects that prevent flooding and remove pollutants from stormwater."

Governor Quinn first launched the $1 billion Clean Water Initiative in his 2012 State of the State address, and since then dozens of communities have secured low-interest loans through the program for drinking and wastewater infrastructure improvements. Due to the overwhelming success of the program, Governor Quinn announced in his 2014 State of the State address that he was doubling the available financing to $2 billion and he asked the General Assembly to expand the allowable projects to include stormwater and green infrastructure projects.
