3 Questions Chronic Pain Sufferers Should Ask Themselves

The numbers involved in America's problem with chronic pain are staggering and probably larger than most realize.

More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, costing nearly $600 billion annually in medical treatments and lost productivity, according to the Institute of Medicine, which adds that the total surpasses that of all people affected by heart disease, diabetes and cancer combined.

"Despite the immense scope of the problem, very little is spent on research to find better ways to manage pain. Chronic pain has become a disease in its own right for many patients," says Komanchuk, a retired schoolteacher who now works as an educational writer and public relations assistant with Joy of Healing, an alternative healing modality.

Komanchuk, a fibromyalgia sufferer, was dealing with so much pain in her life that, at age 52, she was faced with the prospect of spending the rest of her life in a nursing home. Fibromyalgia syndrome is a complex, chronic condition of widespread muscular pain and fatigue, that often includes sleep disturbances, impaired memory and concentration, depression and other debilitating symptoms.

"When medical leave, morphine patches, codeine and myriad pharmaceuticals brought no relief, I took an early retirement and tried a different approach in combination with medical treatment," says Komanchuk, who has since enjoyed more than 13 years of pain-free and prescription-free living after finding an alternative healing therapy that works for her.

Komanchuk, who elaborates on her path to mind-body-spirit wellness at www.jkomanchuk.com, says chronic pain sufferers who cannot find lasting relief should ask themselves the following three questions:

•  Have I really tried everything? Komanchuk had been to orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, rheumatologists, psychologists, underwent MRIs and took all manner of medications for her unbearable pain. In a narrow sense, it would seem as though she exhausted her options - until she looked beyond traditional Western medicine. Alternative treatment guided her to recognize the layers of stress throughout her life that she believes were a primary driver of her chronic pain.

•  Am I overlooking dietary triggers? The medical community continues to learn more about the benefits of healthy eating and specific diets for people with certain conditions, such as a gluten-free diet for those with sensitivities to gluten. Likewise, it can take years for someone to realize that they are lactose-intolerant, or have other food allergies. If you can't pinpoint the source of chronic pain, and no treatment is working, find out what is healthy for your body. "Eliminating wheat, sugar and many processed foods helped me," Komanchuk says.

•  Are your mind, body and spirit in balance? Komanchuk thought she was living the life she was supposed to live, accumulating wealth and possessions, and she had a narrowly defined expectation of others. In reality, however, the priorities guiding her well-being, which are based in the mind, body and spirit, were skewed. Underneath someone's physical experience, pain, she says, is often a caldron of unresolved emotional issues.

"At the height of my suffering I often said, 'If every part of my body that hurt was bleeding, then you could begin to understand what I was feeling,' " says Komanchuk. "I just want to urge the millions who are struggling with chronic pain to never give up - and, to keep an open mind for treatment!"

Modern Woodmen will support Quad City food pantries on May 3

Youths and teens will work to benefit local American Red Cross chapter

On Saturday, May 3, hundreds of volunteers will make a difference throughout the Quad Cities with paint cans, brushes, rollers and cleaning supplies. The food pantry support projects are part of Join Hands Day, a national day of service sponsored by Modern Woodmen and other fraternal benefit societies.

Grace Bible Fellowship Food Pantry

Join Hands Day is the only national day of service designed to bring youths and adults together to plan and implement service projects in their communities. As the generations work side by side, they learn more about each other, sparking a new level of understanding and respect.

The hunger and desperate need for food in the Quad City area sparked Modern Woodmen's interest to support River Bend Foodbank. This is one of many ways Modern Woodmen's plans to give back to River Bend Foodbank in 2014. The foodbank serves 22 counties in Illinois and Iowa and serves nearly 10,000 people each week for emergency food assistance.

Throughout the Quad Cities, more than 1400 area youths and adults are teaming up to complete volunteer projects. Locally, Modern Woodmen sponsors these local initiatives and gives each project a $50 grant to offset project expenses.

Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures. The fraternal financial services organization offers financial services and fraternal member benefits to individuals and families throughout the United States.

New Farmer's Market and First Friday round out French Market Days in LeClaire, Iowa!

The LeClaire Tourism Board is now seeking applications for individuals interested in filling an upcoming vacancy on the Tourism Board representing retail. Board applications are available at City Hall during regular business hours or may be downloaded from the City's website (home page, left-hand side). Braley's First TV Ad Highlights Working Background

DES MOINES, IA - Braley for Iowa is launching its first television ad of the 2014 campaign for US Senate today. 

The minute-long spot highlights Rep. Bruce Braley's working background, and features Braley speaking about his upbringing and work experience with his mother Marcia. Braley, who grew up in Brooklyn, Iowa, worked jobs in road construction and at a grain elevator. Braley also worked to help put himself through college at Iowa State and law school at the University of Iowa.

Braley said, "I think you can tell a lot about someone by where they come from. I grew up in Brooklyn, Iowa, and worked to put myself through college at Iowa State, working jobs in road construction, at a grain elevator, and waiting tables. I grew up in a working family, and that's why fighting to strengthen and expand the middle class is the centerpiece of my campaign for US Senate."

ADOPTIVE MOMS LAUNCH NEW IOWA ADOPTION ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION

WAVERLY - Valerie Aguilera and Shelley Skuster, both adoptive moms from Waverly, have launched a statewide adoption support and advocacy organization, the Modern Moses Foundation.

"We realized there isn't a go-to organization for adoptive families to head to for support, resources and encouragement," said Skuster.

"That's why we wanted to start a statewide organization to really reach out to these families," she added.

Skuster and her husband adopted a newborn daughter from Texas in August.

"We also realize that while every family is unique, there is a common thread between all of us who have chosen to grow our families through adoption," said Aguilera who has two biological children with her husband. The family recently finalized the adoption of their daughter from foster care in April.

Aguilera and Skuster attribute their faith and strong passion for adoption in making the Modern Moses Foundation a reality.

The organization's website, www.ModernMosesFoundation.org, showcases a variety of supporters, including area businesses and organizations, that have a heart for adoptive families in Iowa.

"We have a handful of really talented photographers across the state who are offering customized packages for adoptive families. A lot of them are waiving the fees for adoption milestones like court hearings or homecomings," said Skuster.

"We've received such great support from churches and businesses, too. We know this type of organization is needed for adoptive families in Iowa, and we're excited to offer fun events where adoptive families can get to know one another," said Aguilera.

The Modern Moses Foundation is planning its first event, a statewide picnic for adoptive families, in August. The "Picnic in the Park" is scheduled for Saturday, August 9th in Waverly.

"We're still working out the details, but we're confident we'll have some great sponsors for our first big event," said Aguilera.

Additionally, the organization plans to host monthly coffee meetings for adoptive moms, and volunteers will send homemade food baskets to new adoptive families in the state.

"Our goal is really just to embrace and support all families blessed with adoption," said Aguilera.

Statement from Governor Quinn on the Passing of Dr. Jerry Umanos

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement on the death of Dr. Jerry Umanos. Dr. Umanos was a Chicago pediatrician who moved his practice to Afghanistan and was among three Americans killed Thursday at a Kabul hospital by an Afghan guard.

"I was very saddened to hear of the tragic death of Dr. Jerry Umanos, 'Dr. Jerry,' a kind-hearted and selfless man who for years sacrificed the comforts of home to serve those in need overseas.

"Dr. Jerry helped countless people throughout his lifetime. While there are no words in the English language to ease the pain, we can find comfort in his life's work and all those he healed here at home and around the world.

"I offer my condolences to Dr. Jerry Umanos' wife, their children and his colleagues at the Lawndale Christian Health Center and in Kabul."
