CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today released the following statement on the death of Dr. Jerry Umanos. Dr. Umanos was a Chicago pediatrician who moved his practice to Afghanistan and was among three Americans killed Thursday at a Kabul hospital by an Afghan guard.

"I was very saddened to hear of the tragic death of Dr. Jerry Umanos, 'Dr. Jerry,' a kind-hearted and selfless man who for years sacrificed the comforts of home to serve those in need overseas.

"Dr. Jerry helped countless people throughout his lifetime. While there are no words in the English language to ease the pain, we can find comfort in his life's work and all those he healed here at home and around the world.

"I offer my condolences to Dr. Jerry Umanos' wife, their children and his colleagues at the Lawndale Christian Health Center and in Kabul."

MARION - Governor Pat Quinn today issued the following statement on a new proposal - sponsored by Leader Durkin and Leader Radogno - to enact term limits for constitutional officers in Illinois:

"I support this proposed constitutional amendment and have supported term limits since 1994.

"Constitutional amendments have long allowed the power of the people to translate into positive reform for Illinois government. I led the charge to establish term limits for legislators through constitutional amendment in 1994; I successfully established recall for the office of Governor through constitutional amendment in 2010; and I spearheaded the successful effort to reduce the size of the House by constitutional amendment in 1980.

"I hope voters have the chance to consider this constitutional amendment on the ballot."

April 24, 2014 - New Straitsville, OH - The 100th episode of Comics for Fun and Profit was released this week and marked the occasion by discussing Amazon's purchase of Comixology. The twice weekly podcast, Comics for Fun and Profit celebrates the comics industry with reviews, interviews and comic book news but also a unique twist, an emphasis on comic book buying and selling sometimes referred to as speculation.

"We provide in-depth reviews, news and previews for comic book readers and collectors but with a focus on speculation: buying comics to read, enjoy, collect and ultimately sell to someone else," Says Drew Ellinger, site owner and co-founder of the podcast. Adding, "We often discuss our strategies for success in the comics selling market."

The podcast also interviews comic creators and discusses water-cooler comic debate topics surrounding 'best of' comics episodes, comics grading, and the state of the industry. They couple this with a steady dose of weekly new comic reviews.

"I enjoy our comic review podcasts the most," Said Bob Seifert, one of the founding members of CFP, "we really love talking comics and I think it shows."

The trio realizes there are many podcasts focusing on comic books but theirs has something the others do not.

"The speculation angle really sets us apart from some of the other podcasts out there," Kyle Ellinger, one of the founding members of CFP, said, "It's really great when our picks skyrocket in value and our listeners benefit from that."

Ames, IOWA - April 24, 2014 - Jeff and Deb Hansen, founders and owners of Iowa Select Farms, recently received the Honorary Alumni Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Iowa Select Farms, headquartered in Iowa Falls, Iowa, employs nearly 1,000 Iowans in 46 counties and is both the state's largest pork producer and one of the most technologically and environmentally advanced producers in the nation.
The Honorary Alumni Award is the highest honor given by Iowa State University through the ISU Alumni Association to individuals who have made significant contributions to the university but are not graduates of Iowa State.
"Although neither Jeff nor Deb Hansen graduated from Iowa State, they have served our institution as though it was their own," said ISU President Steven Leath as he presented the award to the Hansens on April 11 at the Alumni Association's Distinguished Awards Celebration.
The Hansens are transforming the educational experience for Iowa State students, Leath added, through their gifts to the Jeff Hansen/Iowa Select Farms Pork Industry Scholarship, their Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement scholarship, the Animal Science Judging Endowment Campaign and the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center, which was completed earlier this year.
Iowa State, Leath said, also has benefited from the Hansens' willingness to fund research, appear as guest speakers on campus and hire Iowa State graduates. He also noted that the Hansens were instrumental in the re-establishment of Iowa Swine Days at ISU, plus they have opened up their farms for faculty to conduct research in state-of-the-art facilities.
"Deb and I are deeply honored to become honorary alumni of Iowa State University," Jeff Hansen said. "We will continue to support the university's efforts to achieve its mission to create, share and apply knowledge to make Iowa and the world a better place."

Erickson's inflammatory rhetoric, extreme ideas on working women, marriage equality don't reflect Iowa values

DES MOINES, IA - Braley for Iowa today called on the Republican candidates for US Senate to skip Friday's planned Republican primary forum hosted by the Family Leader in Ankeny because the moderator chosen to lead the forum doesn't reflect Iowa values.

As Media Matters explains, Erick Erickson, the bombastic media figure and founder of the website RedState.com, has a long history of inflammatory rhetoric and extreme ideas with regards to women in the workforce, businesses that serve same-sex couples, and marriage equality.

Braley for Iowa Campaign Manager Sarah Benzing said, "There's no moderation in the selection of Erick Erickson as moderator, just more right-wing obstructionist rhetoric and ideas that send Iowa backwards. Erickson believes that the increasing numbers of female breadwinners is 'concerning and troubling' and believes that businesses that serve same-sex couples are 'aiding and abetting' in sin. Those just aren't Iowa values. Do Iowa GOP Senate candidates agree with his views, or will they skip tomorrow night's forum?"

"60-Day Hunger Drive" provides one million meals to alleviate hunger across Illinois and western Indiana

Annawan, Ill. - Since it was commissioned in January, a 60-year-old red tractor has traveled more than 1,300 miles and raised $35,192 for the River Bend Foodbank. Caren Laughlin, Director of Marketing at River Bend Foodbank accepted the donation during a presentation at Birkey's Annawan, Ill., location on Wednesday, April 23.

For two months, the restored Farmall Super MTA tractor served as an inventive for donations: individuals who gave $10 or more were entered into a drawing to win it. The tractor visited 12 Birkey's Farm Store locations from Feb. 3 to April 4 as part of the company's 60-Day Hunger Drive.

"This is an incredible effort on the part of Birkey's and its customers and we are very grateful," says Tom Laughlin, executive director of River Bend Foodbank. "Unfortunately the need for emergency food assistance in our outer counties continues to grow and families face tough decisions such as choosing between paying bills and buying food. The support from Birkey's will make a big difference in helping our neighbors in need."

The River Bend Foodbank received donations from 6 Birkey's stores, including Henry, Macomb, Galesburg, Polo, Prophetstown, and Annawan. Proceeds from each Birkey's location will be allocated to agencies in that store's local community.

More than 3,000 individuals and seven food banks participated in the drive, which raised $167,000 in donations–enough for one million meals.

"I am so proud of the way our employees worked together to contribute to neighbors in need," says Mike Hedge, President and CEO of Birkey's. "We hope that this donation will have a big impact, but we know that the need will continue long after our drive is over. We are grateful for the food banks' efforts to alleviate hunger year-round."

In the 47 counties served by Birkey's Farm Stores, Inc., more than 286,000 people are not able to access a nutritious meal when they want it, and one in five children is food insecure. Food banks selected to benefit from the drive were all part of the Feeding America network.

Ross Cluver of Buckley, Ill., won the tractor in the official drawing on Thursday, April 10.

Champaign-based Birkey's has locations throughout central and northern Illinois, and in western Indiana. The event is part of the company's 60th anniversary celebration.
