Military Retiree Appreciation Day Oct. 26 at Rock Island Arsenal

FORT McCOY, Wis. - A military Retiree Appreciation Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 26 at Rock Island Arsenal, Ill. Retirees from all branches of the armed forces and their family members are eligible to attend. The event begins at 7 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.

Retiree Appreciation Day is an opportunity for all armed forces retirees, spouses, widows, and/or guests to receive updated information about retiree entitlement programs.

Photo identification is required for all personnel to access the installation.

DEVENSKI, RIVER BANDITS KNOCK OFF KERNELS, 7-1

Quad Cities moves within 5 ½ games of Cedar Rapids and reduces playoff magic number to 5

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AUG. 22, 2013) - Quad Cities River Bandits right-hander Chris Devenski pitched a season-high seven innings of nine-hit, one-run ball, and his teammates broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fifth inning in a 7-1 win that snapped the Cedar Rapids Kernels' eight-game winning streak in front of 3,882 at Modern Woodmen Park Thursday night.

The River Bandits (34-24 second half, 72-55 overall) moved within 5 ½ games of the first-place Kernels (40-18, 80-46) in the Midwest League Western Division second-half standings. With a loss by the Peoria Chiefs Thursday, Quad Cities' magic number to clinch a second-half playoff berth is five. Any combination of Peoria losses and Quad Cities wins adding to five clinches the latter a playoff spot.

Devenski (3-3) worked around a pair of singles in the first inning and lone singles in the second and third. In the fourth, he allowed a leadoff double by Kernels right fielder Adam Brett Walker, and designated hitter Bo Altobelli hit a one-out RBI single that made it 1-0. Altobelli tried scoring from second base on a two-out single by catcher Michael Quesada, but center fielder Teoscar Hernandez threw him out at the plate to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Hernandez hit a leadoff single for the first hit against right-hander Jose Berrios (7-6). Hernandez then stole second base, went to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Danry Vasquez. In a 1-1, fifth-inning tie, designated hitter Austin Elkins drew a one-out walk, and catcher Roberto Pena singled to put runners at first and third bases. Right fielder Jordan Scott then put a bunt single up the first-base line that brought in Elkins for the go-ahead run. Second baseman Tony Kemp grounded an RBI single to right field, and shortstop Carlos Correa later smacked a two-run double to left-center field off right-hander Christian Powell. All five runs were charged to Berrios, who allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four batters in 4 2/3 innings.

Devenski retired six straight batters in the fifth and sixth innings, and after two straight singles opened the seventh, he struck out the next three hitters to finish with a season-high eight. It was the first seven-inning start for Quad Cities since Joe Bircher's seven innings Aug. 3. Right-hander Zach Morton followed with two scoreless innings to finish the win.

Quad Cities added a pair of runs off Powell in the seventh, with two Kernels errors and two walks adding to a Hernandez single.

The River Bandits' scoring of at least seven runs activates the "Lucky Seven Run" promotion, as American TV & Appliance at 4800 Elmore Avenue in Davenport will offer a 40% discount on select furniture Friday, Aug. 23. Duffy Returns for Third Season with Mallards

MOLINE, Ill. (August 22, 2013) - The Quad City Mallards have re-signed defenseman Matt Duffy, the Mallards announced today.

"Matt's a very dependable defenseman who provides veteran leadership and who we expect to be a key player for us again this season," said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski. "He brings great effort shift-in and shift-out and is a guy we can count on in important situations- including the power play, where plays an important role for us."

Duffy, 27, returns for a third season with the Mallards after finishing last year tied for fourth among Central Hockey League defensemen in points (42), fifth among blue liners in assists (33) and tied for seventh among defensemen in goals (9). The 6' 2", 200-pound Windham, Maine, native finished ninth overall in plus/minus rating (+19).

Duffy first joined the Mallards in January of 2012 after mononucleosis kept him off the ice for the first half of the 2011-12 season. He scored three goals and totaled 11 points in 21 games in his first campaign in the Quad Cities.

Duffy was originally selected by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round of the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the one hundred fourth overall choice. After a four-year collegiate career at the University of Maine, Duffy broke into professional hockey at the tail end of the 2008-09 season, seeing time with both the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans and the ECHL's Florida Everblades. The following year, in his first full pro campaign, Duffy produced five goals and 14 points in 52 games with the Everblades and scored once and recorded five points in 11 games with the Americans.

Duffy split the bulk of the 2010-11 season between the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings and Gwinnett Gladiators and also played two games for the Portland Pirates of the AHL. He scored four goals and totaled 10 points in 56 ECHL games.

Duffy played 165 career games at Maine, scoring 21 goals and notching 43 points. Duffy went to the Frozen Four with the Black Bears each of his first two years at Orono. He enjoyed his most productive season as a collegian when he scored seven goals and totaled 17 points in 39 games as a senior in 2008-09.

In a letter, FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez assured the senators that the FTC will evaluate concerns that oil companies may be undermining efforts to distribute renewable fuels that help boost energy security and lower the price of gas for consumers

Recently the senators sent a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez urging the Administration to take action to investigate recent reports indicating this potential anti-competitive behavior by oil companies

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D, MN) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) today announced that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will examine possible anti-competitive practices by oil companies that limit consumers access to homegrown renewable fuels. Recently, Klobuchar, the chair of the Antitrust Subcommittee and Grassley, the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez urging the Administration to take action to address recent reports indicating that oil companies may be undermining efforts to distribute renewable fuels, including higher ethanol gasoline blends, that help boost our nation's security and lower the price of gas for consumers.

"Consumers deserve to have access to homegrown renewable fuels that not only lower costs at the pump but also help boost our energy security," Klobuchar said. "It is imperative that the Administration investigate any possible anti-competitive behavior by the oil companies that might limit consumers' access to renewable fuels. I'm pleased to see the Federal Trade Commission is taking steps to investigate whether certain practices by oil companies may be impeding competition, and I will continue to work to ensure that Americans can continue to realize the benefits of cheaper, cleaner renewable fuel."

"The allegations from retailers about possible anticompetitive practices from Big Oil are disheartening, but not surprising, knowing the lengths Big Oil will go to in order to keep biofuels out of the fuel supply," Grassley said. "It's going to take an 'all-of-the-above' approach to wean the United States off of foreign sources of oil, so it only makes sense that we all work together. I appreciate the FTC taking a look at the allegations and look forward to their conclusions."

In the letter to Klobuchar and Grassley, Ramirez assured the senators that the FTC will evaluate the information provided and address the concerns expressed in the senators' letter under pertinent antitrust standards.

Why 'Cheating' on Your Diet Can Actually Help You Lose Weight

2 Experts Say 'Cheat Days' Can Do a Body GOOD

It's hard to stick to a low-calorie diet day after day to lose weight, but new research shows you don't have to, says Dr. Susie Rockway, a veteran nutritional and biochemical expert in the U.S. health industry.

"Recent studies show you can lose 10 to 30 pounds in eight weeks through alternate-day fasting," she says. "Every other day, dieters in the study ate only lunch - no breakfast or dinner - between noon and 2 p.m. The following day, they could eat whatever they wanted. Not only did they not 'gorge' as expected on the feed days, most had an easier time sticking with it."

Dieting is as much about the mind as it is about the body, and most people have a difficult time staying with any sort of very strict regimen, says Sebastien Hebbelinck, a 20-year-plus veteran of the nutraceutical industry.

In the alternate day fast studies conducted by Dr. Krista Varady of the University of Illinois at Chicago, participants on average consumed only 110 percent of their energy needs on feed days, Rockway says. Lunch on fast days was 400 to 500 calories for women and 500 to 600 calories for men.

• Eat your bigger meals earlier in the day. Avoiding large meals at dinnertime is effective in helping to lose weight, particularly abdominal fat. Eat controlled portions of healthy, nutritious foods. Rockway adds the following tips based on her nutritional and biochemical expertise.

• Include plenty of fiber and water (stay hydrated!). Unlike most nutrients in foods, we don't absorb fiber. It passes through our digestive tract, and if it's soluble fiber, it can help us feel full since it forms viscous gels. High-fiber foods include legumes, beans, avocados, nuts, whole fruits (versus juice), and whole-grain foods such as whole wheat spaghetti. On a cheat day, you may splurge on a higher fat hamburger or fries, which case this is the perfect time to take a fiber-rich fat-binding supplement such as Lineatabs before the meal to help prevent some of the excess fats from being absorbed. Rockway likes Lineatabs because, unlike other fat-binding supplements, it dissolves in water and is consumed as a beverage, making the fiber soluble in the stomach and immediately available to bind to fats. Some great high-protein choices include turkey or chicken breast, pork loin chop, tuna and salmon and whey protein shakes. Avoid foods high in simple carbs, such as syrups, soft drinks and jams.

Buffalo Bill Museum is open until 5pm daily. Hours are 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays 12noon to 5pm. A reminder: group discounts are available for tour groups, clubs/reunions, and school groups. Call the museum at 563-289-5580 for details!

Primitive Cottage is collecting food for the Princeton Presbyterian Church's Food Pantry which is in great need of food donations. They have helped a lot of people, and now they need our help. Donations can be dropped off at Primitive Cottage in LeClaire. Please check the expiration date on items because anything that has expired can't be given away.

Meet and greet Pastor Melody any Wednesday from 1-3 pm at Happy Joe's. Pastor Melody from First Presbyterian Church of LeClaire, will be at Happy Joe's in LeClaire, every Wednesday, from 1-3 pm, sipping on a soda, reading and waiting to visit with you and your friends. Stop by and say hi. Or, if you have a prayer request or a question, just let her know. Meals for Seniors at the church every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 12 noon. Good food and a time to visit with others. Please call 563-289-3646 and make a reservation 2 days in

advance.

Four sisters make their way to one venue this weekend when SHEL arrives at River Music Experience! See what these four sisters have in store for you as they combine creative freedom and talent into a collective sound. Enjoy the August weather while you still can on Friday during Friday Live at 5, too! This week, MidAmerican Energy sponsors The Low Down for a surefire show! Don't miss up-and-coming indie rockers Desert Noise on Tuesday at RME, as well.

To all you ladies out there, tonight's the night for you to relax over cocktails and healthy conversations at the RiverCenter. Join Women's Connection when they present 3 Simple Ways to De-Stress Your Life this evening. Be sure to wear comfy clothes so you can try out some yoga poses and dance moves while you're there! Stop at the Adler Theatre too and get tickets for the upcoming show featuring The Office's Creed Bratton on September 19th!

If you haven't had a chance to explore the Questionable Architecture Exhibition at the Figge, now's your last chance! Come see movable structures made by hand from one of the Quad Cities very own before the exhibition closes Sunday. But where one exhibition closes, another opens. Check out Colony Interactive and work together to build a new colony at the Figge. What a way to build community!

Saturday is a day of firsts for some downtown businesses! Be a part of Gallery 114's first ever Salon Show this Saturday. Enjoy various art along with live music by Mover and Shakers and comedy by Andrew King. Also on Saturday, the Quad Cities Food Hub will host the first of many seminars to come. This weekend's class revolves around Fall Crops and Harvest- Seasonal Plant Support. Show up a little early to peruse the Farmer's Market beforehand.

Finally, we owe a big THANK YOU to all of those who made River Roots Live the best show we've ever done! We hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather, BBQ, and unforgettable music as much as we did. We're already looking forward to RRL's 10th anniversary next year!
