Is Your Inner Child Keeping You Trapped in a Bad Relationship?

5 Questions to Ask Yourself; The Answers May Help Set You Free

It happens when we see politicians repeatedly make the same self-destructive mistakes - think former legislator Anthony Weiner's repeated sexting scandals.

Or we hear friends complain repeatedly about the horrible job they're "stuck" in.

Or, in a rare glimmer of insight, we wonder why we're still hanging on to a "romance" that makes us miserable.

"When people seem mentally healthy and it looks like they could easily make a change that would make them happier, we're absolutely baffled by why they don't," says Steven Jay Fogel (www.StevenJayFogel.com), author of the new book Your Mind Is What Your Brain Does for a Living (March 2014).

When you're the "stuck" person, the why may seem more evident: You're scared, or you think, "If I just keep doing the right things, it will all work out."

Either way, it's likely they?and you?aren't making a conscious choice at all, Fogel says.

"We think we're making decisions based on the present, but we're usually not. We tend to operate on automatic pilot, responding to situations based on the coping strategies and thinking patterns we developed in childhood," he says.

"When those strategies are dysfunctional, we just keep repeating the same behaviors over and over again."

The good news is that we can learn to recognize that "default" thinking and rewire the brain to change it, says Fogel.

The cofounder of Westwood Financial Corp., one of the nation's leading private commercial real estate owners, Fogel draws from decades of neuroscience and mindfulness research to offer solutions.

What can you do to get yourself unstuck? Get started, he suggests, by answering these questions?in writing!

· What is causing your pain? Think about whether you're in a relationship or job that's become less and less satisfying and increasingly painful over a long period. Describe in writing the elements of the relationship or situation that are persistently causing you pain and how long you've been experiencing these problems. Knowing that there are three ways to end your suffering - accept the situation, change it, or remove yourself from it - write down the reasons you're staying even though you're suffering and what is preventing you from choosing Door 1, 2 or 3.

· How are you interpreting your partner's behavior? If you repeatedly fight about the same issues, describe the issues. Think about whether you're unconsciously investing the issue with a meaning based on your "autopilot" thinking. For instance, if you're arguing because your partner's messy and ignores your requests to be neat, are you interpreting that as disrespect toward you? Do you further interpret that disrespect as a lack of love for you? Is it possible that your partner is just not a neat person and that has nothing to do with his feelings for you?

· Do you have impulsive autopilot behaviors that are causing problems? We can often check the impulses that stem from our autopilot brain just by stopping to think before we act. Bursts of anger are one example; suppressed anger that turns into passive-aggressive behavior is another.

· Do you feel shamed or blamed by your partner's critical comments? Write down the comments accurately?as they were spoken. Then think mindfully about whether your partner was really shaming you or if you interpreted the comments in that way because of your own inner critic. If it was the former, have a conversation with the person about how you feel when this happens, and state that you'll be more open to the feedback if the criticism can be expressed objectively.

· Did you bring a myth with you into the relationship? If so, describe the myth. For example, you might have believed that you will cure everything that's wrong with the other person. Or that she will fix all of your problems. Describe how you came to believe that myth and what it would take for you to release it.

Veterans and their family members from all 99 counties say Braley is best to fight for Iowa
DES MOINES, IA - More than 1,000 Iowa veterans and family members of veterans from all 99 Iowa counties are formally endorsing Rep. Bruce Braley's candidacy for US Senate, Braley announced today at the Iowa Capitol.

The veterans and their family members are founding members of Veterans and Military Families for Braley, a group that will help lead grassroots organizational efforts for Braley's 2014 campaign.

Braley has become known as a fighter for Iowa veterans in Washington, passing a law to give tax credits to businesses that hire unemployed veterans, taking on the Pentagon to secure combat pay for Iowa National Guard troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and expanding a program to help injured veterans secure disability-accessible housing.

Braley said, "I'm honored to have the support of so many Iowa veterans. My dad enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was 17 and landed on Iwo Jima the same day the flag was raised on Mount Suribachi. He taught me about service to country, and that's why I work hard to ensure that when our veterans return home, someone is fighting for them to help create jobs, expand educational opportunities, and ensure they get all the benefits they've earned."

Braley was joined at today's announcement by Afghanistan veteran Todd Eipperle of Marshalltown, a registered Republican and co-chair of the group, and a number of Iowa veterans.

Eipperle said, "Bruce Braley is genuinely concerned about Iowa veterans and their families. For him, it's about fighting for Iowans, not about politics. That's why I'm honored to stand with him today and endorse his candidacy for Senate. We need more people like him working for Iowa veterans in Washington."

Judy Voss of Davenport, a co-chair of the group, said, "We need Bruce Braley in the Senate, keeping up the fight for Iowa veterans. Supporting our troops means standing up for them not only when they're in harm's way, but when they come home. Bruce clearly understands that, and it's why so many veterans are standing behind him today."

Some highlights of Veterans and Military Families for Braley:
  • Includes more than 1,000 veterans and family members of veterans hailing from all 99 Iowa counties.
  • Comprised of veterans from every American war since World War II.
  • Members are registered Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
The co-chairs of Veterans and Military Families for Braley are:
  • Todd Eipperle, Marshalltown. Iowa National Guard.
  • Sen. Jack Kibbe, Emmetsburg. US Army.
  • Bill Knapp, Van Meter. US Navy.
  • Judy Voss, Davenport. US Air Force.
A full list of founding members of Veterans and Military Families for Braley can be viewed at the following link: www.brucebraley.com/veterans

Bruce Braley was born in Grinnell and grew up in nearby Brooklyn, Iowa. His father, a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima in World War II, and his mother, a teacher, taught him the value of hard work. Braley worked jobs like road construction and truck driving to help pay his way through college and law school. As an attorney in Waterloo, Braley represented Iowans who took on powerful interests and big corporations. Elected to the US House in 2006, Braley has worked to create Iowa jobs, protect farms, strengthen small businesses, and stand up for veterans. Bruce Braley is running for Senate to fight for the things that matter most to Iowans. He'll fight for middle class families, because that's where he comes from.

Braley lives in Waterloo with his wife, Carolyn. They have three children: Lisa, David, and Paul.

10,000 Chicago-Style Pizzas to be Shipped to Overseas Servicemembers

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today partnered with leaders from DHL Express and Pizzas 4 Patriots to send 10,000 Chicago-style deep dish pizzas to servicemembers just in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Pizzas will be delivered to troops in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Oman.

Super Bowl Sunday is traditionally America's biggest day of the year for eating pizza. Since our troops serving overseas are unable to enjoy the game at home, the not-for-profit organization Pizzas 4 Patriots works to make sure a slice of home comes to them. The idea was originally conceived by former Master Sgt. Mark Evans of Elk Grove Village as a way to show appreciation and bring reminders of home to servicemembers overseas. This is the second year that Governor Quinn has participated in the special send-off event.

"Many of our nation's sons and daughters have sacrificed the comforts of home to join the front lines," Governor Quinn said. "It's up to us to make sure they are not forgotten on Super Bowl Sunday or any day of the year. I'm proud to partner with DHL and Pizzas 4 Patriots to help honor servicemembers by giving them a small reminder of home - the best pizza the country has to offer, from right here in Illinois."

The DHL Express team will be packing and loading all 10,000 ready-to-bake, Chicago-style pizzas from Illinois-based Great Kitchens into DHL cargo jets and shipping them. Once in the Middle East, the pizza delivery will be distributed to Camp Bastion, Baghram Airbase and Kandahar Airfield and then on to various Forward Operating Bases in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Oman. DHL Express will provide door-to-door, final delivery for the distribution, working closely with the U.S. military to ensure the pizzas are delivered fresh and ready to eat. The pizzas are enough to feed every soldier stationed in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Oman.

"Eating a hot slice of pizza while watching the Super Bowl is an American tradition, so it's very special to us that we help make this delivery happen and bring troops a slice of home," CEO of DHL Express U.S. Ian Clough said. "We're delighted to leverage our international expertise and global network to transport this wonderful care package overseas."

Since 2008, Pizzas 4 Patriots has worked with DHL Express to send more than 132,000 pizzas in support of U.S. military personnel overseas, and in 2013 Pizzas 4 Patriots made a Guinness World Record for the world's largest pizza party, with over 30,000 pizzas. For more information about Pizzas 4 Patriots, please visit Pizzas4Patriots.com.

Governor Quinn has made commitment to veterans, servicemembers and their families a top priority throughout his career. He led the Illinois Warrior Assistance Program that helps veterans transition back to their daily lives and the Welcome Home Heroes program which helps support Illinois servicemembers seeking home ownership. As Lieutenant Governor, Quinn championed the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund Act, which established a fund to provide grants to families of Illinois National Guard members and Illinois residents serving in the U.S. Armed Forces Reserve components who are called to active duty. These grants help servicemembers and their families with the costs of food, housing, utilities and other expenses when the wage-earner has left civilian employment for active military duty. The fund has distributed more than $15.1 million to 29,625 Illinois military families to assist with the financial burden at home.

For more information about these and other programs for our veterans, visit OperationHomefront.org or call the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs at (217) 782-6641 or (312) 814-2460.
