BRAMPTON, Ontario (January 23, 2014) - Gergo Nagy scored two goals and added an assist and Ty Rimmer made 34 saves as the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Brampton Beast 4-1 Thursdaynight.  With the victory, the Mallards (17-9-7, 41 points) snapped a four game winless streak and moved into a sixth place tie with the Tulsa Oilers

After Quad City's Jeff Lee broke a scoreless deadlock from the doorstep 11 minutes into the second period, Nagy would lead the charge as the Mallards took control in the third period.  Matt Boyd roofed Nagy's centering feed to double the Mallard lead at 4:54 of the third.  At 13:21 Nagy stretched the gap to 3-0 with a blast from the slot.  Rob Collins's wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle cut the margin to 3-1 and spoiled Rimmer's shutout bid with 2:07 remaining but Nagy would cap off the Mallard victory by scoring an empty net goal with just 65 seconds left

Vladimir Nikiforov returned to the Mallards' line-up Thursday night after coming off injured reserve earlier in the week.

The Mallards and Beast meet again tomorrow night in Brampton.  The Mallards next play at home onFriday, January 31 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.  January 31 is another $1 Dog/$1 Beer Night presented by 97X.  $1 hot dogs and beers will be available at iWireless Center concession stands during each of the Mallards' 11 Friday night home games this season.

In 2013, the team unveiled a new 220-foot long dual zip line, a rock climbing wall, and a number of new bounce houses. The team's major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, just saw all six of its affiliates reach the playoffs - the first time in a decade any MLB team can claim such success. The River Bandits were one of three affiliates to reach the championship round and one of two to win their league championship.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to review the conditions that have led to propane cost spikes in Iowa.

"The recent propane supply shortage and price increases are causing hardship for the many rural Iowa families that use propane to heat their homes," Grassley said. "I'm asking the agency that oversees business practices to look at the propane situation and see whether the price increases are legitimate or manipulated in any way to consumers' detriment."

In the meantime, Grassley encouraged anyone who may be eligible for federal heating assistance to contact the Iowa Bureau of Energy Assistance for more information.

Grassley's letter to the FTC is available here.  The text is copied below.

January 23, 2014

The Honorable Edith Ramirez
Chairwoman, Federal Trade Commission
600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20580

Dear Chairwoman Ramirez:

I am writing to inquire about the Federal Trade Commission's oversight of the propane market in the Midwest.

In recent days, the Midwest spot price of propane at Conway, Kansas, has spiked far above the Gulf Coast spot price at Mont Belvieu, Texas.  I recognize that in the fall, the demand for propane to dry the large, wet corn harvest was significant.  In addition, the Midwest has experienced increased demand for propane due to the current cold weather.  However, the price for propane at Conway has surpassed the spot price in Mont Belvieu by as much as several dollars.  Many of my constituents have questioned this considerable price differential.  Moreover, in just the past few days, the spot price for propane in the Midwest has doubled.

I request that the Federal Trade Commission remain vigilant in overseeing the propane market to prevent possible anti-competitive behavior or illegal manipulation, and to ensure that any supply shortages are not created artificially.  I look forward to hearing the results of your review of the propane market in the Midwest.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Grassley
United States Senator

Cc:          The Honorable Eric Holder
Attorney General of the United States

The Honorable Ernest Moniz
Secretary of Energy

The Honorable Mark Wetjen
Acting Chairman, Commodity Futures Trading Commission
