St. Paul, Minnesota - Foundation Financial Group completed its second quarter national philanthropic initiative, FFG's Viva Musica. The corporation supported Viva Musica's mission to ensure music education stays in schools. Through a significant financial contribution, Foundation Financial was also able to finance musical scholarships for Minnesota high school students.

Due to limited funding, many schools are having difficulty maintaining music and art programs. By implementing FFG's Viva Musica initiative, Foundation Financial Group employees were able to directly affect and improve the education of Minnesota's youth. The initiative included employee fundraising, volunteer efforts, and a significant corporate donation.

Foundation Financial Group employees from the corporation's Saint Paul Branch Office also volunteered to staff Viva Musica's first fundraising event of the year, the Drive for 5 Anniversary Event. One musically inclined FFG volunteer even performed as the event's opening act. In addition to FFG's generous donation, the Drive for 5 Anniversary Event generated over $2,000 which will benefit Minnesota's youth through Viva Musica's "The Lucille Project." Named after B.B. King's beloved guitar, Lucille, the project awards musical scholarships that provide custom built guitars to local aspiring musicians.

Foundation Financial Group's Viva Musica campaign funded three Apprentice Program Scholarships for local high school students. The scholarships will be awarded to high school musicians who are currently learning to play guitar. The students will receive guitars made exclusively for the students by LaDoten Custom Guitars. The owner of LaDoten Custom Guitars will also provide three guitar instruction sessions and a lesson on the guitar making process.

Get on the Party Bus!  Brews & Blues Cruise Thursday June 20

With the BluesFest only a few weeks away, it's time to start the pre-fest activities!!  The Mississippi Valley Blues Society is sponsoring a Brews and Blues Cruise on June 20, 2013.

We will start at Martini's On The Rock in Rock Island beginning at 4:30 p.m., where they will be offering a Blues Burger for only $4.00    At 6:00 p.m. we will leave Martini's on the party bus and head to the first microbrewery, Bent River in Rock Island, then to Great River and Front Street in Davenport.  At each stop, two free samples and $1.00 off pints will be available.

You will receive a commemorative glass. Door prizes will be drawn between each of the microbreweries including, but not limited to, fest tickets and MVBS merchandise.  We will return to Martini's On The Rock for blues music with Chris Avey and Detroit Larry till 11:00pm.

Lindsay Anderson to Succeed Carrie Hightman

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today announced that Lindsay Anderson, a senior advisor for his administration, will succeed Carrie Hightman as chair of the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). Anderson brings extensive legal and governmental experience, including the coordination and oversight of legislative agendas for state agencies such as the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Today's announcement continues the governor's commitment to making Illinois government more accountable, transparent and effective.

"Carrie Hightman has contributed a significant amount to thousands of students and I thank her for her service to the state of Illinois," Governor Quinn said. "Lindsay Anderson is a talented public servant who will work hard to improve higher education in Illinois, and encourage our young residents to pursue post secondary schooling, which will strengthen Illinois' economy."

Anderson most recently served as a Senior Advisor to Governor Quinn and as Chair of the Illinois Campaign finance Reform Task Force. Prior to those roles, Anderson acted as legislative director and counsel to Governor Quinn, working directly with the members of the Illinois General Assembly on targeted issues facing state government, including education.

Prior to joining the Quinn Administration in February 2009, Anderson worked at McGuireWoods as an Attorney in the State Government Relations practice group where she provided clients with lobbying assistance and insight on the development and execution of strategic legislative plans. Prior to joining McGuireWoods, Lindsay worked as an Assistant Counsel to the Illinois Speaker of the House. In that capacity, she served as counsel and parliamentarian for committees on revenue and local government. Anderson also worked in the Mayor of Chicago's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.

Under Hightman's leadership as Chair of the IBHE, the state of Illinois adopted a 10-year master plan for higher education, the Public Agenda for College and Career Success, and made significant progress towards achieving its goals of affordability, accessibility and degree completion. The state is on track to meet its goal of 60 percent of the adult population having post secondary degrees by 2025. Hightman created a collaborative environment for all higher education stakeholders during her six years leading IBHE.

The IHBE oversees the programs, activities and policies related to higher education within the state and is responsible for planning and policy development; budgetary and fiscal affairs; academic program reviews and approval; and higher education grant administration and evaluation.  The four primary components of the Illinois' blueprint for higher education include :

  • Increase educational attainment to match the best-performing states and world countries;
  • Ensure college affordability for students, families, and taxpayers;
  • Increase production of high-quality postsecondary credentials to meet the demands of the economy and an increasingly global society; and
  • Better integrate Illinois' educational, research, and innovation assets to meet the economic needs of the state and its regions.

Anderson's new position as Chair of IBHE will be effective beginning on June 5, 2013.

Award winning documentary examines problem of sexual assault in the military

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack today met with Kirby Dick, the Director of the Academy Award-nominated film "The Invisible War" to discuss the issue of sexual assault in the military.  The Invisible War is a documentary that explores the epidemic of sexual assault in the military through interviews with victims from each military branch.  The two discussed the documentary and solutions to address this problem.  Loebsack is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the bipartisan Military Sexual Assault Prevention Caucus.  He has worked to address the problem of sexual assault in the military.  A photo can be found here.

"I am disgusted by these crimes and the issue of sexual assault in the military has been pushed to the side for too long.  As a military parent and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I refuse to let this issue continue to take a back seat.  There should be no higher priority for the Pentagon than to combat this problem.

"I was pleased to be able to meet with Kirby and talk about his film.  His documentary puts a face to the victims of sexual assault in the military who often times find themselves in the shadows with no one to turn to. The Invisible War is an important movie that will leave an impact on all who see it."

Loebsack authored a provision in the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act which required a review of the services and treatment available for victims of sexual assault and abuse throughout the military, including the National Guard.   He also worked to include provisions signed into law as part of the FY 2013 National Defense Authorization Act which required the establishment of special victim units to provide victim support, investigatory capabilities, and prosecutorial expertise as well as an independent review of how sexual assaults are prosecuted under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).  Loebsack is a cosponsor of the BE SAFE Act which significantly strengthens measures to hold perpetrators accountable and to provide victims with the care and services they need.  He is also a cosponsor of the Military Justice Improvement Act which would put the decision regarding whether to prosecute an assault case to prosecutors instead of commanders.  In addition, he is a cosponsor the Sexual Assault Training Oversight and Prevention (STOP) Act, which creates an autonomous Sexual Assault Oversight and Response Office within the military to prosecute, report, and investigate sexual assault as well as to provide victim care and oversight.

Rock Island Library teen reading programs and free events are following the "Beneath the Surface" summer reading theme, so there's plenty of treasure hunting, zombies and even a little "cake archeology" to dig into for teens ages 12 to 18.
The teen program officially kicks off Friday, June 7 with a free "Teen Feature," which includes a classic movie, free popcorn, and the chance to both pick up the teen reading bingo card entry and cross off a square for attending a teen library program. The event takes place from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, Rock Island.  Additional free events for teens this month include a:
  • Library Treasure Hunt from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 13 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens will follow a trail of clues to uncover treasure and win prizes.
  • Teen Iron Chef contest from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 18 at the Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road, Rock Island. Working with a stack of ingredients, teens will whip up a culinary masterpiece to become the library's next prize-winning chef.
  • Teen Gaming Night from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 20 at the Main Library, 401 19th Street. Teens can play Xbox 360 with Kinect, Wii and board games.
  • Zombie Night, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 27, at the Main Library, 401 19th St. Dig into your chance to survive the zombie invasion by learning how to create a Zombie Preparedness Plan, apply zombie make-up for either camouflage or fun and enjoy a classic zombie movie and snacks.
·         Cake Archeology program, from noon to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, July 2 at the Southwest Branch. Archeology is in layers, and so are cakes! Teens will learn some simple cake decorating techniques and build their own creations.
All teen events are for ages 12 to 18 and are free.

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today made the following comment on the news that the President's nominee for United States Trade Representative is the third nominee in recent months to have offshore accounts or income.

"President Obama called the Ugland House 'the biggest tax scam in the world.'  Yet he nominated two top advisers in a row who invested in the Ugland House.  He also nominated a Commerce secretary with significant offshore income.  When he was first elected, the President said tax avoidance through international tax havens forced ordinary Americans to 'pick up the slack.'  He railed against fat cats who avoid taxes offshore.  President Obama's hypocrisy is piling up with his picks for top posts in his Administration.  If the latest nominations go through, he'll have two members of his Cabinet and one adviser with Cabinet-rank status who used the offshore practices he said forced ordinary Americans 'to pick up the slack.' "
