Folksinger Lil' Rev Returns to the Moline Public Library

The Moline Public Library and Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities welcome folksinger Lil' Rev back to the area as he presents "Fiddler on the Roof Meets O Brother Where Art Thou?" on Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m.at the Moline Public Library, 3210 - 41st Street.  This program of Jewish and Yiddish folk music from the singer, multi-instrumentalist, and music historian is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact the library at 309-524-2470.

Through a colorful prism of American roots influence, Lil' Rev will perform Jewish Blues, Bluegrass (or as he likes to call it, Jewgrass!), Country Western (look out Kinky Friedman, here comes Lil' Rev!) and original songs played on the guitar, ukulele, mandolin, harmonica and banjo.  Lil' Rev will seamlessly weave a tapestry of Yiddish, Israeli, Chasidic, and American folk songs into a rich gumbo of story, song, and lore for the whole family.

FDA APPROVES NEW TREATMENT FOR ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER PATIENTS

The FDA has approved Bayer and Algeta's drug Xofigo (radium Ra 223 dichloride, formerly known as alpharadin) to treat men with symptomatic late-stage (metastatic) castration-resistant prostate cancer that has spread to bones but not to other organs. It is intended for men whose cancer has spread after receiving medical or surgical therapy to lower testosterone.

Xofigo binds with minerals in the bone to deliver radiation directly to bone tumors, limiting the damage to the surrounding normal tissues. It is the second prostate cancer drug approved by the FDA in the past year that demonstrates an ability to extend the survival of men with metastatic prostate cancer.

Simon's college scorecard resolution passes committee

Lt. Governor urges House to pass transparency measure

SPRINGFIELD - May 16, 2013. Following its unanimous passage from the House Higher Education Committee, Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is encouraging the full House to pass House Joint Resolution 33. The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Naomi Jakobsson (D-Urbana), urges all colleges and universities in the state to prominently feature a link to federal College Scorecard information on the school's website.

"A college credential is a prerequisite for in-demand jobs in our economy, but college affordability is a barrier for many students," said Simon, the state's point person on education reform. "Making it easier for college-seeking students to access the federal College Scorecard means vital information - like average cost and completion rates - is readily available to help students find a college or university that fits their needs and their budget."

In her first two years in office, Simon visited each of the state's 48 community colleges and 12 public universities. Students at each campus identified affordability as a major barrier to their college success. The College Scorecards clearly identify average costs, graduation rates, loan default rates, and areas where students can better estimate costs based on their personal goals.

HJR 33 not only encourages degree and certificate-granting institutions in Illinois to link to the federal College Scorecard, but also to work together across institutions to design and publish an Illinois College Scorecard with data that supplements the federal data. Simon intends to create a working group this summer to design the Illinois version.

"By making this information accessible and easy-to-understand, we demystify the costs of a higher education and move closer to enrolling and graduating more students," said Simon. "I thank Rep. Jakobsson for sponsoring this resolution and for her leadership on education issues."

Country music star Chris Cagle will perform in concert Aug. 28 on the Farm Progress Show stage in Decatur, Ill. The concert is sponsored by Syngenta, Farm Progress Show and Richland Community College.

DECATUR, ILL., (05/16/2013) - Country music artist Chris Cagle will perform in concert on Wednesday, Aug. 28, following the second day of the 2013 Farm Progress Show. The Farm Progress Show is scheduled for August 27, 28 and 29 in Decatur, Ill.

"The Farm Progress Show and Richland Community College, along with presenting sponsor Syngenta, are excited to host a concert again this year," said Don Tourte, vice president of Penton/Farm Progress. DES MOINES - The Iowa Finance Authority, Iowa Association of REALTORS® and the Iowa Home Ownership Education Project are partnering to bring Iowa home buyers free educational sessions.

A series of seminars entitled, Free Home Buyer Education Series: Unique Iowa Programs & Information to Get You Started, will provide information on state mortgage and down payment assistance programs, homeownership benefits and the steps towards owning a home. Iowa Finance Authority staff will present the information, and housing counselors will also be on hand to answer questions. These events will be hosted by local boards of REALTORS®.

PRO BOWL LINEBACKER CHAD GREENWAY JOINS AMERICA NEEDS FARMERS TEAM

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA - May 16, 2013 - Chad Greenway, a small-town farm boy, now a dominant defensive player in the National Football League (NFL), is the latest football star teaming up with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) and the University of Iowa (UI) to promote the America Needs Farmers (ANF) campaign.

Greenway was raised on a small South Dakota farm that his parents still operate.  Today, he is one of the NFL's most prolific linebackers, but underneath his jersey and pads is a farmer passionate about highlighting the vital role agriculture plays in our country.   "The importance of farmers is never going to go away.  The foundation of human nature is farming: being able to produce something from the land, being able to feed your family, feed your community, and feed the world," Greenway said.  "It's the backbone of America.  It's what we're all about.  It's the fabric of our being."

Greenway says the life lessons learned on the farm help motivate him on the football field.  "There are so many levels where hard work and growing up on a farm can correlate to football.  I've used all the principles I gained growing up on a farm to really push me in the profession that I'm in now," said Greenway, star linebacker of the Minnesota Vikings entering his eighth season in the league.  "The game of football is unique and tests you in many ways; it tests your will; it tests your ability to get up from being knocked down; it tests your work ethic, for sure, and the want-to that you have."

Greenway joins an impressive list of former Hawkeye players who support ANF, a campaign launched by legendary Hawkeye coach Hayden Fry in 1985 during the Farm Crisis. The ANF emblem is displayed on Hawkeye football players' helmets today and is a source of pride for the former Hawkeye great.  "I'm proud that I went to the University of Iowa and that ANF is part of what the UI symbolizes and tries to push.  I'm proud that the people of Iowa can turn on the Hawkeye game and be proud of the people we are putting on the field who wear that emblem," said Greenway.

With most people two to three generations removed from the family farm, IFBF and the UI joined forces to promote the ANF message and talk to consumers about the food, fuel and fiber raised by farmers. "Consumers want to know more about where their food comes from and the ANF effort is just one way farmers are helping build that understanding," said Craig Hill, IFBF president.

Greenway joins former Hawkeye greats Hap Peterson, Mike Haight, Matt Kroul, Casey Wiegmann, Jared Devries, and Dallas Clark as ANF supporters.  The ANF campaign continues to create excitement with the 2013 Hawkeye football season drawing closer.

The website includes details on Braley's many accomplishments for the people he represents. Going forward, the site will be updated frequently as Braley continues to effectively fight for Iowa.
