Statewide partnerships address affordable housing challenges

Des Moines - Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds today proclaimed April 21-27, 2013 as Affordable Housing Week in Iowa. Iowa joins organizations throughout the country in celebrating Affordable Housing Month, with this week declared specifically to bring awareness to the importance of affordable housing in Iowa.

"We've taken great strides to provide affordable housing opportunities for Iowans," said Governor Branstad. "We are committed to making even more progress to ensure an adequate supply of affordable housing is available to fit the needs of Iowa's diverse workforce, young professionals and seniors well into the future."

"The Iowa Finance Authority and the hundreds of local housing organizations, lenders, Realtors, service agencies and affordable housing advocates share the mission of advancing affordable housing opportunities for Iowans," said Lt. Governor Reynolds. "This shared dedication is impacting the lives of Iowans across the state every day, in turn making our neighborhoods, communities and state an even better place to call home."

The Iowa Finance Authority recently commissioned a statewide housing study that found many positive aspects of Iowa's housing market including a high homeownership rate, low rate of foreclosures and high affordability of housing. The study also detailed the most critical housing priorities over the next five years as workforce housing, affordable senior housing, accommodating preferences of elderly to age in place and the preservation of affordable multifamily units. The full study, including regional data is available at IowaFinanceAuthority.gov.

"The Iowa Finance Authority fulfills its mission through the partnership of thousands of local housing professionals," said Iowa Finance Authority Executive Director Dave Jamison. "Affordable Housing Week is an ideal time to say thank you for the tireless efforts of our partners and we look forward to working together to ensure Iowans have an affordable place to call home for generations to come."

The Iowa Legislature created The Iowa Finance Authority, the state's housing finance agency, in 1975 to undertake programs to assist in the attainment of affordable housing for Iowans. Since then, the Iowa Finance Authority's role has grown to include nearly 40 affordable housing, water quality and community development programs. The Iowa Finance Authority is a self-supporting public agency whose mission is to finance, administer, advance and preserve affordable housing and to promote community and economic development for Iowans.

DES MOINES, IA - Locals 33 and 125 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union - as well as their international affiliate, the United Association of Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and HVAC Service Techs and their General President William P. Hite -- have announced their endorsement of Bruce Braley for US Senate. Locals 33 and 125 represent over 2,500 skilled mechanical contractors across the state of Iowa.

Braley announced in February that he had formed a committee to run for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Tom Harkin.

Andy Roberts, Business Manager of Local 33, said, "The Plumbers and Steamfitters of Iowa are excited to stand with Bruce Braley in his 2014 campaign for Senate. Bruce is someone who grew up working in Iowa, put himself through college, and has been working ever since. He understands the challenges middle class families face and the value of hard work. That's why he's fought hard for working families in Congress, and why he'll be an effective voice for the middle class in the Senate."

Bruce Braley said, "I'm proud to have the endorsement of the Plumbers and Steamfitters. I'm running for Senate to strengthen the middle class, create economic opportunity for everyone, and bring people together to get things done.  Their support will be a big help as we continue to build our grassroots campaign."

Braley has received a wave of endorsements in recent weeks, highlighted by the endorsement of Sen. Tom Harkin on Saturday in Des Moines.  In February, Rep. Dave Loebsack (IA-02) and former Rep. Leonard Boswell announced their endorsement; in March, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald endorsed; on April 3rd, 71 Iowa legislators announced their endorsement of Braley. Last week, Braley reported he had raised $1.07 million for his Senate campaign and has over $1 million cash on hand as of March 30th. Iowans from all 99 counties have contributed to Braley for Iowa.

The Plumbers and Steamfitters are the 13th Iowa labor organization to endorse Braley.

The Tuck-In' introduces new bedtime traditions to help children go to bed peacefully

IVINS, Utah - Most parents are all-too-familiar with the temper tantrums and obstinate behavior that can accompany bedtime. Here with a resource to help parents get their children to bed peacefully comes "The Tuck-In: (A Child's Event)" (published by AuthorHouse), the reassuring new children's book by author Karen J. Cheever.

Based on Cheever's own experiences, "The Tuck-In" tells the story of Savannah, who like most kids, hates bedtime with a passion. When Savannah's mother tells her it's time for bed, Savannah complains, whines and asks to stay up late.

However, this night is going to be different. Savannah's mom introduces her to a very unique event called The Tuck-In. The Tuck-In becomes a special nightly ritual and Savannah learns to no longer dread bedtime. Cheever's book will foster a connection between parent and child while dispelling bedtime anxiety. It also creates an opportunity to create memories and traditions that can be carried on through generations and includes a helpful section for parents that lists the steps necessary to complete a successful tuck-in each and every night.

The American Lung Association's annual "State of the Air 2013" report finds that air quality nationwide continues the long-term trend to much healthier air. The strongest progress came in lower levels of year-round particle pollution across much of the nation.

"State of the Air 2013" is the Lung Association's 14th annual, national air quality "report card." It uses the most recent air pollution data, compiled by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the two most widespread types of pollution - ozone (smog) and particle pollution (PM 2.5, also known as soot). The report grades counties and ranks cities and counties based on their scores for ozone, year-round particle pollution and short-term particle pollution levels.

Son of German-Jewish Family Uncovers Diaries from pre-War Nazi Germany

Eighty years ago, those who were part of America's "Greatest Generation" were beginning to define events that would prove to be some of the country's finest moments. In stark contrast, Germany was entering its darkest period.

The two countries powered ahead on a collision course that would lead to vastly different fortunes for its people, notes Torkel S Wächter, the son of German-Jewish parents who uncovered fascinating family documents written during the ascendancy of Nazism in Europe.

On his website, www.onthisday80yearsago.com, he replays history in diary fashion with posts appearing on the anniversary of events 80 years ago in Germany. It's an artistic/literary project called "simulated real time," a way of commemorating history so that it's not forgotten, he says.

"These anniversaries make for an excellent study in contrast in history for the two countries," Wächter says; he cites the following examples:

• United States: Eighty years ago, the country was beginning a relationship with one of the most beloved presidents in U.S. history, Franklin D. Roosevelt. On May 7, the 32nd commander-in-chief outlined his economic plan, the New Deal, in one of his famous fireside chats.

• Germany: In stark contrast, just three days later in Germany, literature deemed "un-German" was destroyed in the infamous Nazi book burning. Earlier in 1933, Adolf Hitler had attained power, and on April 1, Jewish businesses were boycotted.

• Post-war legacy: While WWII was the beginning of the end for the Nazi party, the war marked the end of America's Great Depression. For the past 80 years, the United States has remained the preeminent world superpower. In contrast, the reconstruction of Germany after the war was a long process; 7.5 million - 11 percent - of Germans had been killed; the country's cities were largely destroyed; and agricultural production had declined by two-thirds. A psychological shame has hovered over Germans since the discovery of genocidal death camps.

"I used to hate Germany; while growing up, my father never discussed his German upbringing, even though he was obsessed with the country," says Wächter, who was raised in Sweden. "We were never allowed to talk about it because the pain from the past was still alive in him."

After his father died, Wächter finally opened the boxes he'd left behind. They were filled with diaries, letters, articles and other documents. From these, he wrote "The Investigation," which highlights questions about personal responsibility and evil during pre-war Nazi Germany.

These are lessons, he says, from which we can all learn today.

"It's much more difficult to hate something that you come to understand," he says. "I no longer hate Germany. I've realized that my father actually loved the country - he had a great upbringing there, and Jews in Germany had been a success story. But because of what occurred under Hitler, he felt such betrayal and pain, he could never bring himself to talk about it."

About Torkel S Wächter

Torkel S Wächter is the descendant of German-Jewish civil servants who suffered under the Nazi regime. His book, "The Investigation," outlines the experience as recorded by his paternal grandfather and father. He studied economic history, development theory and languages at the universities of Lund, Melbourne and Barcelona, as well as Jewish studies at Paideia, the European Institute for Jewish Studies, and architectural restoration at the Royal University College of Fine Arts in Stockholm. After a stint as a fashion model in Paris and Barcelona, Wächter trained as a diver in the Royal Swedish Navy and then went on to an aviation career. During the 1990s Wächter served as a first officer with Schandinavian Airlines. In 1997 Wächter published his first novel, "Samson," and in 1999 he published the first Swedish e-book. Wächter lives in Stockholm and Barcelona with his architect wife; together they have four children.
